Supports flexible hosting needs through seamless upgradability and strong monitoring capabilities
The most valuable features of Dell PowerEdge R-Series for me are the feature richness and the upgradability. I really love the way that it is so dynamically applicable for every situation, and they manage to have an all-in-one solution for every single situation. Dell PowerEdge has supported the growth and operational success of my company through its great compute power and price-to-performance ratio. Every time Dell is at the top of its game for us, and there is just no other brand for us that is able to reach that kind of price-to-performance ratio. Dell PowerEdge R-Series has features that specifically cater to the needs of my small company, such as iDRAC. The iDRAC system is a complete feature set for managing servers and hardware technically and monitoring-wise. It really fits in our system and our ecosystem, and monitoring-wise, it is excellent. They have all these sensors available via different protocols and end points, which I love, and the ability to manage and control everything via the iDRAC interface is just a welcome bonus. In our use case, Dell PowerEdge R-Series is very flexible. It is another computer which helps a lot because of the durability over time. They keep running, making scalability for getting more of those resources in our environment so easy.

Cloud storage and email have supported our association but usability and search still need work
Rackspace OpenStack can be improved because it wasn't clear that you have to cancel 30 days before; otherwise they charge you for the month. I didn't really feel there was anywhere I could go if I had questions in order to live chat or reach out to someone; if that exists, it wasn't made apparent to me. Being able to search keywords and having what you're looking for come up, whether it's an email or in the drive, could definitely be improved, and making it work better with cell phones and improving the setup to be more user-friendly would be helpful.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers is a user-friendly solution that provides performance stability."
"Dell R series are very good engineered servers."
"We haven't had any major IT outages for six years now thanks to Dell PowerEdge R-Series."
"Downtime was reduced significantly."
"My experience with customer service has been positive."
"It is very easy and seamless to use the Dell OpenManage console for the lifecycle management of PowerEdge Rack Servers, and it is one of the best solutions in the market today to manage the lifecycle of services."
"I find Dell PowerEdge Servers to handle diverse applications and evolving needs effectively, but we have to upgrade the hardware periodically."
"Dell PowerEdge R-Series products grow with the company's needs; they are scalable for my long-term plans."
"The open-source nature of OpenStack provides significant value."
"Rackspace OpenStack impacted my organization positively in that the drive helped me keep files in an organized folder, and obviously we needed email addresses to be able to communicate with each other and for outsiders to be able to email us."
"The documentation was plentiful and very helpful."
"I like its integration with GitLab and its simplicity. OpenStack has a lot of third-party libraries that it uses."
"Rackspace OpenStack positively impacts my organization by making processes easier since I do not need to manage all servers manually because it efficiently manages server operations and maintains proper data, which saves time."
"The most valuable feature is the customization, and with the customization you can really give the customers what they want."
"The most useful opinion about Rackspace OpenStack is that it is very flexible, first of all, and the most important feature is that it is feature-rich."
"Rackspace OpenStack is stable and reliable, often compared favorably against other solutions."

Cons

"Its customer support should be improved."
"In the future, I would mainly like to see improvements in the speed of response of storage, as we aim to enhance our performance with non-rotating disks."
"There is a suggestion to potentially revisit pricing."
"For storage, I find that Dell PowerEdge R-Series is not useful."
"When integrating the PowerEdge rack, we needed help from all the different companies to combine it with the servers. Each company has a system, and things must align with the server."
"Dell needs to focus more on SMBs, helping us get the most out of our products. For example, at events, there should be very specific SMB sessions where there are Dell technicians, engineers, and Dell executives meeting with us and finding out what we need. Dell is big on promoting the fact that they're part of our team and that they want to be our partners, and I would like to see them actually partner with us. Do it less with the big Fortune 500 companies and do a little bit more with us SMBs."
"The price has room for improvement."
"The shipment times could be improved. Sometimes we have to wait four or five days before we get the actual servers. It could even be longer. Sometimes it is many days."
"Rackspace OpenStack can be improved because it wasn't clear that you have to cancel 30 days before; otherwise they charge you for the month."
"So for the main stability, there have been a couple of issues that I've experienced."
"VMware has a side-to-side replication feature, which is still more mature than Rackspace OpenStack's which can't be used in a production environment."
"It could use more examples in different languages (API use cases)."
"In terms of what needs to be improved, I would say the support. Rackspace might have some good support but the open source OpenStack doesn't have support because there are too many versions coming and too many people are customizing it."
"The pricing of Rackspace is quite high in the Vietnam market."
"The line migration is a problem."
"It should have a single dashboard for cloud management and on-premises systems"

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If price isn't a concern, I would recommend it."
"The solution's prices are good, especially considering what you get to use...The licensing aspect of the solution is also fine."
"It is very competitive. I have not been too involved in the licensing, but from a hardware perspective, I always find them to be competitive."
"The licensing is expensive and inflexible."
"It's a bit of a shock when you have to find the money, but the pricing is very competitive, so I'm happy with that."
"I don't see any issues with respect to licensing. It's power-efficient, so it's beneficial to the customers price-wise. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fee."
"The pricing is very good because there are a lot of types of PowerEdge Rack Servers. You have the R540, R640, and R740. The prices are very scalable through the specific server, e.g., small businesses can take the R640 while large businesses can take the R740 or R840. Thus, Dell technologies touch on every organization."
"When you compare public cloud solutions to PowerEdge in terms of cost, initially the cost of Dell servers or Dell technology was really high. However, right now it's on par or, maybe, even cheaper when we use Dell hardware. If we don't swap it out in three years and if we stretch it to four or five years, then we can get even more of an ROI versus cloud cost."
"I use it as an open-source tool."
"The pricing is low."
