Supports flexible hosting needs through seamless upgradability and strong monitoring capabilities
The most valuable features of Dell PowerEdge R-Series for me are the feature richness and the upgradability. I really love the way that it is so dynamically applicable for every situation, and they manage to have an all-in-one solution for every single situation. Dell PowerEdge has supported the growth and operational success of my company through its great compute power and price-to-performance ratio. Every time Dell is at the top of its game for us, and there is just no other brand for us that is able to reach that kind of price-to-performance ratio. Dell PowerEdge R-Series has features that specifically cater to the needs of my small company, such as iDRAC. The iDRAC system is a complete feature set for managing servers and hardware technically and monitoring-wise. It really fits in our system and our ecosystem, and monitoring-wise, it is excellent. They have all these sensors available via different protocols and end points, which I love, and the ability to manage and control everything via the iDRAC interface is just a welcome bonus. In our use case, Dell PowerEdge R-Series is very flexible. It is another computer which helps a lot because of the durability over time. They keep running, making scalability for getting more of those resources in our environment so easy.

Enforces standardized setup procedures following Certified Validated Design (CVD) guidelines and offers greater flexibility and control over the system compared to traditional systems
The GUI setup follows the right setup, meaning we have to follow the CVDi.e. Certified Validated Design. Everything is clear, because you can build CI yourself, but without rules, it can be messy. With FlexPod, there are rules to follow, making it more standardized. This helps with troubleshooting and compatibility assessments, simplifying troubleshooting significantly. We also use FlexPod pre-validated architectures to validate the design. It is very, very important to us because we had a bad case in 2015 where separate items integrated poorly due to no version or firmware compatibility certification. Troubleshooting became a nightmare. So, standards are crucial for us, and everything entering production should be verified or at least documented for certification.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I find Dell PowerEdge Servers to handle diverse applications and evolving needs effectively, but we have to upgrade the hardware periodically."
"From my point of view, the biggest return on investment when using this product is the reliability and low downtime that I have had with them, the ease of management, and automation."
"PowerEdge Rack Servers powered by Intel offer good performance in handling the evolving needs of high-performance workloads and offer good value for money."
"The most valuable feature is the storage, which is offered in different varieties with many options depending on the use cases, including unstructured data."
"It is very easy and seamless to use the Dell OpenManage console for the lifecycle management of PowerEdge Rack Servers, and it is one of the best solutions in the market today to manage the lifecycle of services."
"The most valuable feature is OpenManage. We get a lot out of OpenManage because we have a sprawling infrastructure with around 100 data centers, and managing all of those separately is challenging."
"The biggest value of PowerEdge servers is that Dell is a brand name. I also appreciate the flexibility of the platform. I know how to configure PowerEdge servers and build a solution from scratch."
"In Dell PowerEdge R-Series, the most valuable feature is the management."
"It's an all-in-one validated design; we don't have to worry about making sure that thing A supports thing B, as it's all top-down, integrated, and validated, which means for us, it's going to just work."
"For us as an IT department, it helped us a lot. Before we implemented FlexPod, we were using different solutions all based on a virtual infrastructure. On VMware, before implementing FlexPod, we had a lot of problems doing backups with disaster recovery. After integrating it, it enabled us to have shorter maintenance windows, instant backups, instant recovery, which also minimized the number of alerts that we get from the application team and from the employees who were working on the application that something is not working."
"NetApp just blows them out of the water with manageability and the price point."
"The flexibility, operational efficiency, and scalability of FlexPod has been a huge factor for us because our customers have workloads that need to run on classical HTTPs, flash storage, or possibly in the cloud. This flexibility and enhanced ability of the solution is very important for this. We trust in it."
"The ability to really leverage the 10-Gb connections between the UCS to the Cisco Nexus switch and then to our NetApp really improved performance for us and allowed us to experience a huge amount of growth with no loss of performance."
"From that perspective, if we look at our return on investment, we have had more productivity uptime, our end users are obviously happier, and IT is not constantly getting a black mark from the business because tech has not been worked."
"FlexPod is very stable, it has redundant components and the uptime is 100 percent."
"This sounds dumb, but it just works. I don't want to have to deal with support, and I don't need to because, again, it has just worked."

Cons

"I know the pricing for Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers went up last year, and we weren't too happy about that, but it is what it is."
"Occasionally, there might be extended wait times between placing an order and receiving the delivery."
"There's always room for support improvements, and the AI features could continue to be enhanced as the relationship with Nvidia grows."
"I would say the pain points are better power usage and consumption; that's not up to Dell, that's up to the CPU manufacturers."
"The VxRail updates need to be faster."
"The design, in terms of power efficiency, can be improved."
"We do encounter power supply failures from time to time."
"The specs for the benchmarks are very good, but the firmware and software are lacking."
"You must build each block separately, that's a disadvantage sometimes."
"The CVD process requires additional development and validation from each of the vendors involved, which does not allow us to be at the cutting edge of technology."
"The initial setup is complex because it has to be done in a certain way."
"The nature of running FlexPod in its pre-defined infrastructure is that it's not pre-configured."
"We did run into some hiccups around some different things."
"I would like to see an easier implementation, but I think that with newer versions of ONTAP and new versions of FlexPod, it's getting better."
"For the initial customer or engineer, installing for the first time, this product sometimes is challenging to set up."
"The initial setup was complex. UCS is not the easiest thing to configure from the ground up."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing comes with a warranty."
"It's a bit of a shock when you have to find the money, but the pricing is very competitive, so I'm happy with that."
"It is very competitive. I have not been too involved in the licensing, but from a hardware perspective, I always find them to be competitive."
"The pricing is fair enough."
"The product's pricing is not good."
"At present, the pricing seems a bit high for us."
"The pricing for Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers is on par with everything else at the moment."
"The pricing is great; very competitive. That's the reason we bought hundreds of them."
"We have reduced our manpower with the solution."
"We immediately saw a return on investment due to the fact that replacing our legacy storage arrays with the new AFFs reduced the footprint and maintenance costs. Overall, we saw an almost immediate ROI."
"We have seen our data center rack space collapse about 90 percent. We have a data center which only has two racks now out of the 20 that were there previously."
"It created lower total cost of ownership. Previously, we had disparate storage and servers, and there were bits of kits everywhere. Now, we have two data centers with almost identical setups in both."
"Overall, the solution works pretty well. The biggest complaint I have from customers is the cost."
"We have saved time and money for new service deployments."
"Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
"I have saved time on new service deployments. I've done deployments in under a week, and if it's a cloud-based deployment, it's even faster."
