A great backup solution that is very simple and works in multiple environments
The solution could be faster. However, they already have acceptable speeds. The DD Boost is only a transport layer of the product. For example, we went on RFP, and the two main candidates were Veritas NetBackup and Dell DPS. We chose Dell DPS because of DD Boost. Veritas NetBackup also uses DD Boost, but Dell DPS is defaulted and integrated into the client. There are things other than DD Boost that can be improved. In the future, we will see more things that the product exhibits. I feel DD Boost will only improve in relation to Dell because it is integrated into the client and the software. In the next release, it will be good to have a real-time view of the volume and for it to be shown as a metic. In addition, we are backing up many terabytes and sending gigabytes of unique data, so it will be good to have physical and logical data in DD Boost. Not having this makes it difficult to quantify the savings.

Reliable, fulfils compliance requirements, and enables to manage data backups easily
I use the solution for backup and recovery Our systems have become more stable and scalable after using NetApp AltaVault. The dashboard is useful for managing data backups. The deduplication technology helps me take offline backups efficiently. The workload on the end team has been reduced. It…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup of DD Boost involves a simple procedure."
"Very stable solution."
"DD Boost has improved our data backup and recovery process. Its data deduplication feature is amazing. The product comes with cloud features. It helps to save time."
"It cuts down network traffic, and only the relevant parts move around because it is deduced and encrypted."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is deduplication."
"Operationally, we are satisfied as there have been no issues or closures to report."
"There are no limitations when it comes to the scalability feature of the product. You can scale up or scale down however much you want."
"The backup aspect of the solution is its most valuable feature."
"The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications."
"The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data."
"It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it."
"The dashboard is useful for managing data backups."
"The flexibility. Being able to virtualize it, port it wherever I like, test my backups, test my DR capabilities whenever I like without impacting anybody."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data. You're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."

Cons

"The solution needs a better gateway between the on-premises and cloud deployment models. We have to work around it or find a third party to assist."
"It would be nice if they could have the same tool set right from the smallest to the biggest modules, but being specific frame dependent."
"Though the customer uses the product, they don't receive active support from DD Boost even though they pay for it."
"The solution could improve by adding more flexibility for the customers here in Thailand. Some of the small capacity models of the solution are not needed by our customers. There should be a more flexible version of the solution."
"Some competitors may not allow the use of DD Boost with their data management systems. The application process is not determined at the source site but on the estimation side."
"I'd like the be able to deploy the solution on SAN backups."
"The multi-tier functionality can be improved, but it is quite good. They could improve replication and perhaps support additional sharing network protocols. I would also like to see better implementation of NFS Version 3, but it is already implemented and quite usable as it is."
"This solution should cover more platforms, and there should be more product coverage."
"It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture."
"I would like to see more web support."
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror."
"The product must provide multi-gate connectivity."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."
"More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"You don't have to pay additional costs."
"The pricing is high compared to the competition and should be reconsidered."
"We scale this product by adding licenses, which are related to capacity."
"The cost is monthly."
"The solution is expensive."
"Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is an expensive product. There are extra costs for support because every year, you have to renew your SLA for support, and the cost is always increasing."
"The pricing is competitive when compared to other vendors."
"DD Boost's price is good for its features."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"The price is a bit high."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"It is a rather expensive program."
