Data teams have streamlined code-driven pipelines and now collaborate faster on shared models
We are still experimenting with testing, but not that much. We are not using some features yet. We are trying to introduce them because we are coming from a background of SSIS. The team used to work with SSIS, Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services. We are still adapting one feature at a time. Currently, we are working with the SQL modules and with the Jinja templating. We are experimenting with testing, but I would say towards the end of this year, we are planning to explore more of the documentation and the data lineage options as well. I would say the benefits are coming from GUI-based tools like SSIS. We have more control on the codebase. We can create something of a system where we can use macros and templating, speeding up the development cycle. We are now trying to introduce a little testing, and also we are using some sort of a CI/CD cycle, so continuous integration and continuous deployment. I do not believe that these kinds of features are that common as a package as a whole package. dbt excels in that area. I used to have a couple of notes about the performance, but lately I have discovered something called dbt Fusion, which, according to dbt Labs, they proclaim is much faster during the parsing of dbt models. However, I would love to see even more of an out-of-the-box solution regarding the testing. They are treating the testing in a good way so far, but I would love to see even more improvement because the whole data testing field is not very mature. It is not the same as software testing; for example, you have test suites, test tools, and profilers, but for data testing, it is not yet that advanced. I would love for dbt to take the lead on that.

Real-time data streaming has simplified transformations and kept enterprise databases synchronized
Oracle GoldenGate is good, but I would like to improve it. There is a need for whoever installs and configures Oracle GoldenGate to set the correct parameters for the use cases we need to use. In some cases, we had performance problems related to the streaming because there was a lot of information to stream concurrently. However, you can tune Oracle GoldenGate to use more RAM on the source side or more processes. I think that sometimes what is missing is knowledge about the tool from the person responsible for configuration. At this moment, Oracle GoldenGate is a very good tool, and I do not know in which area we can improve it. Perhaps the debug part of the tool could be improved. In some cases, I use the utility for how Oracle GoldenGate generates messages about the statements that it streams because of bugs, and in some cases, it is not very user-friendly. It may be possible to improve the API or the path related to debugging, but not the tool itself. The tool itself is good. I remember that in some configurations, we had problems with the streaming of DDL, which are changes to Oracle object structures such as tables and procedures. A new feature could be to perform streaming for operational objects such as procedures, functions, packages, or grants. This would synchronize source and target for these aspects, not only for data or the main types of structures, but also for others. I remember that there was some configuration in which you performed the streaming of the entire schema, or if you performed streaming for only tables, then you were unable to stream grants and other Oracle objects. I think it is important to introduce that capability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"From a developer point of view, I find the ease of development and the code to be the most useful capabilities of dbt."
"dbt has positively impacted my organization by allowing us to create our data pipelines much faster, going from ingestion of data to creating a data product in weeks instead of months, and we can do it in-house with the skillset we already have."
"Since we migrated from SSIS to dbt model architecture, it takes around four hours only to complete a full refresh, and the client is now happy because our downtime was drastically reduced when we perform a complete refresh of the data."
"I would say the best feature or the most desirable feature for dbt is the ability to write everything in code."
"The product is developer-friendly."
"There is operational efficiency achieved, and data quality and governance have also been achieved with modular SQL and version controlling, which reduced duplication of data and data errors."
"The product is reliable for data integrity."
"Oracle GoldenGate is a product that I would recommend."
"This solution is stable and we aren't facing any issues."
"GoldenGate, right now, is a really fantastic solution."
"I like that the product transforms data and provides real-time applications."
"This solution provides us with real-time replication and it does not affect the performance of other operations, which is very important to us."
"We are using it for getting data back."
"The initial setup is straightforward. It doesn't take too much time or effort to implement the solution."

Cons

"Every upgrade is a little bit of a risk for us because we do not know if the workarounds that we developed will be available for the next version."
"The solution must add more Python-based implementations."
"dbt can be improved as I find the co-pilot in dbt is not very good, and my team has tried using it but opted to move off it and use other co-pilots such as GitHub."
"Since dbt has a license cost, if a company is small and does not have much budget, they can explore other tools because there are other tools that provide the same functionality at a lower cost."
"If I needed to name a few areas for improvement, I would mention the migration of code to Git and GitHub, which sometimes fails and can be confusing for developers during handover."
"Dbt is not as stable as preferred, as it has had a few outages in the current year itself, so improvement should be made in the outages section as it is not stable."
"Oracle GoldenGate could improve the price."
"Oracle GoldenGate's installation is not user-friendly, we had to read a lot of documentation for the setup and configuration."
"There are a lot of bugs in the solution."
"Microservices Architecture is not user-friendly."
"Technical support for Oracle products needs to be more efficient (at least locally in Egypt)."
"In the future, I would appreciate a more user-friendly monitoring interface for easier management and troubleshooting."
"The process of transforming the data between two different databases is inefficient and needs to be improved."
"The tool's connections are disconnected at times. The tool needs to integrate other databases."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution’s pricing is affordable."
"The price of Oracle GoldenGate should be lowered. It is expensive compared to other solutions."
"We pay a yearly licensing fee for Oracle GoldenGate, which is very expensive."
"The tool needs to improve its pricing."
"The price of this solution is good."
"The licensing model should be improved to be more cost-effective for the end users."
"Its price can be better. It is a bit crazy, and its licensing is very difficult to understand. I would rate it one out of five in terms of pricing. There don't seem to be any additional costs."
"Oracle GoldenGate is a high-priced solution because it follows the core-based pricing model versus the software-based pricing model of other solutions."
"The tool is a bit expensive."
