Data pipelines have improved financial accuracy and now build transparent audit-ready reports
As for something I wish we had, dbt's native support for Python transformations came later, and we did some complex financial classification calculations that felt clunky in pure SQL. We ended up writing Python in our n8n workflows and then fed the results back into dbt, which created a bit of a split-brain situation. If we would have had dbt Python models earlier, we could have kept that logic unified. Managing multiple reporting standards was our biggest operational pain point with dbt. We were running UAE corporate tax compliance and IFRS disclosure workflows simultaneously for different clients, and dbt does not have a native concept of multi-tenant or multi-standard project organization. Everything lives in one flat structure, so we had to build more conventions: separate schema folders for IFRS models versus UACT models, custom macros to tag models by compliance regime, and environment variables to control which set of transformations run for which client.

Real-time data streaming has simplified transformations and kept enterprise databases synchronized
Oracle GoldenGate is good, but I would like to improve it. There is a need for whoever installs and configures Oracle GoldenGate to set the correct parameters for the use cases we need to use. In some cases, we had performance problems related to the streaming because there was a lot of information to stream concurrently. However, you can tune Oracle GoldenGate to use more RAM on the source side or more processes. I think that sometimes what is missing is knowledge about the tool from the person responsible for configuration. At this moment, Oracle GoldenGate is a very good tool, and I do not know in which area we can improve it. Perhaps the debug part of the tool could be improved. In some cases, I use the utility for how Oracle GoldenGate generates messages about the statements that it streams because of bugs, and in some cases, it is not very user-friendly. It may be possible to improve the API or the path related to debugging, but not the tool itself. The tool itself is good. I remember that in some configurations, we had problems with the streaming of DDL, which are changes to Oracle object structures such as tables and procedures. A new feature could be to perform streaming for operational objects such as procedures, functions, packages, or grants. This would synchronize source and target for these aspects, not only for data or the main types of structures, but also for others. I remember that there was some configuration in which you performed the streaming of the entire schema, or if you performed streaming for only tables, then you were unable to stream grants and other Oracle objects. I think it is important to introduce that capability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"There is operational efficiency achieved, and data quality and governance have also been achieved with modular SQL and version controlling, which reduced duplication of data and data errors."
"I would say the best feature or the most desirable feature for dbt is the ability to write everything in code."
"dbt has positively impacted my organization by allowing us to create our data pipelines much faster, going from ingestion of data to creating a data product in weeks instead of months, and we can do it in-house with the skillset we already have."
"Overall, I find dbt to be optimized compared to other tools."
"The product is developer-friendly."
"Since we migrated from SSIS to dbt model architecture, it takes around four hours only to complete a full refresh, and the client is now happy because our downtime was drastically reduced when we perform a complete refresh of the data."
"From a developer point of view, I find the ease of development and the code to be the most useful capabilities of dbt."
"The most concrete outcome was a significant reduction in data errors reaching our downstream AI models, and after implementing dbt's testing layer, we caught roughly 70% of those issues at the transformation stage itself, before they ever touched the model."
"Data replication is seamless, once it is set up on a database."
"GoldenGate is a perfect product; it's very stable and can integrate heterogenic systems, and I believe GoldenGate is one of the best Oracle products."
"It scales well. You can either have it working in with the databases, or you can move it outside. It's got the ability to parallelize up, so you can certainly extract and replay the data from your databases in parallel. So it does have horizontal scalability. That is probably one of its stronger features, the ability just to automatically parallelize the replay and playing of data to allow to scale to large volumes."
"Oracle GoldenGate is a stable, powerful and robust solution for your data replication needs."
"The real-time replication feature of the product is particularly beneficial."
"It is a scalable solution."
"We can replicate data across different data centers and different technologies."
"It allows us to migrate from one system to another, from one server to another, with no downtime, no outage."

Cons

"Dbt is not as stable as preferred, as it has had a few outages in the current year itself, so improvement should be made in the outages section as it is not stable."
"If I needed to name a few areas for improvement, I would mention the migration of code to Git and GitHub, which sometimes fails and can be confusing for developers during handover."
"The solution must add more Python-based implementations."
"If you compare the cost of those packages with dbt alone, it is more expensive to use dbt alone."
"Managing multiple reporting standards was our biggest operational pain point with dbt."
"Every upgrade is a little bit of a risk for us because we do not know if the workarounds that we developed will be available for the next version."
"The initial setup of dbt is somewhat complex."
"Since dbt has a license cost, if a company is small and does not have much budget, they can explore other tools because there are other tools that provide the same functionality at a lower cost."
"In some cases, we had performance problems related to the streaming because there was a lot of information to stream concurrently."
"It should be easier to integrate this solution with non-Oracle databases, including cloud-based solutions hosted on Azure."
"Base versions where a bit buggy particularly during recovery after there were machine/host crashes or unexpected shutdowns."
"It's stable but you have to know how to maintain it. That's why it's not 10 out of 10 for me. There are some bugs, there are some issues here and there. All of a sudden your process is not working and you have to figure out why, and sometimes it's not so clear."
"The solution's performance needs improvement."
"It should be easier to integrate this solution with non-Oracle databases, including cloud-based solutions hosted on Azure."
"The licensing model should be improved to be more cost-effective for the end users."
"It is not a very stable tool, and you need to monitor it perfectly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution’s pricing is affordable."
"We have purchased corporate licensing to use Oracle GoldenGate."
"Licensing for Oracle GoldenGate is paid yearly."
"The product is expensive."
"The solution is highly-priced."
"Oracle GoldenGate's cost is high."
"The solution would be costly for a small organization."
"The return on investment would make it a worthwhile deal."
"Oracle GoldenGate is a high-priced solution because it follows the core-based pricing model versus the software-based pricing model of other solutions."
