Unified security and sd-wan have improved uptime and cut wan costs for multi-site branches
Users report stability issues in certain versions, which requires regular updates. Real-world attacks have also highlighted the need for urgent patching of vulnerabilities.Fortinet FortiGate, while a powerful and feature-rich web firewall, could improve in areas like firmware stability, documentation, and ease of use. The learning curve can be steep for some users. For beginners, support quality can vary, and frequent updates with occasional vulnerabilities call for careful patch management. However, once Fortinet FortiGate is configured, it remains highly reliable and efficient. Customer support needs improvement, as I find it very slow, with reports from other users reflecting that customer support is inadequate.

Great firewalls, VPN, and Intrusion prevention capabilities
Some features that could be improved are advanced threat protection, sandboxing, and vulnerability management. Another point is to improve the technical support provided by Check Point UTM-1. Although the company offers different standards, including basic and premium, by mail and by telephone, they present a very large deficiency in the time it takes to comply with the provisions of the SLA. Coordinating a meeting is complicated by the schedules. The documentation should also be improved by having it unified.

Rapid VPN setup has connected offices in minutes and brings live insights for proactive issue control
What I appreciate the most about Netgate pfSense is the ease and straightforward nature of the platform. I can set up a new office in less than 10 minutes. The benefits of using Netgate pfSense are that I can set up VPNs in less than two to three minutes, and then just deploy the file across my networks, where everybody would be connected in less than an hour. The dashboards of Netgate pfSense bring all the necessary information that I need at a glance, and it is actually a live update every three to five seconds. It is spotless, and I have been able to catch issues before they hit operations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"There has been no attack on our servers after we configured the FortiGate IPS."
"Fortinet FortiGate provides superior protection compared to other firewalls, with high processing capabilities."
"I only deal with it from a security analyst's point of view. I don't really get into the features of the actual FortiGate. From the security point of view, it works, and it does its job."
"I would recommend using Fortinet FortiGate because of its usability."
"Fortinet offers comprehensive security solutions for various purposes."
"Fortinet FortiGate is both scalable and stable."
"We like signature-based anomaly detection and zero-day protection features."
"The scalability of Fortinet FortiGate is good."
"We can create a domain to separate and segregate some functions, some services."
"The ability to create a central database for objects (sources, destinations, services, etc.), which can be used in several different policies, and the possibility of browsing all logs (FW, IPs, identity awareness, etc.) from all the gateways from a unique screen are big pluses."
"As a security information analyst, it helps me to see information in a very clear way."
"The major improvement was the ability to have a very good log, as we are able to log all details and troubleshoot when a problem occurs."
"The firewall allows the logging of traffic, and it has an easy to use VPN."
"When we were evaluating services, we knew we needed something robust and easy to implement with the old equipment and something that was safe."
"Since I have installed the solution everything is working very great."
"The filtering was very good."
"We used Watchguard and Endian, but pfSense is the most complete for layer 3 firewalls."
"PfSense was quite a bit less expensive than some other alternatives, and it's worked as well as we could hope."
"I recommend this product, it's well-balanced, has a longer history than other solutions so it's not lacking in maturity."
"The solution's most valuable features are its ease of use and versatility."
"pfSense is a nice product, and I find that there's a lot of information out there. There are some good tutorials on YouTube and other websites with helpful information."
"The ability to create a VPN allows me to monitor branch offices from a central location."
"It's powerful. You can get quite granular in setting up a highly topical application of pfSense, but if you want just basic protection, you can do that easily. It depends on your needs and how brave you are. You can go deep into the system and do some cool things with it or set up the bare protection you would get from any firewall."
"The built-in open VPN and the VPN Client Export are the solution's most valuable aspects."

Cons

"In FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW), my concern regarding improvements is the licensing model."
"A disadvantage exists when we are collecting the logs, as it sometimes becomes very difficult to interpret the logs that are generated from the firewall."
"It would be nice if FortiGate incorporated some built-in endpoint protection features. I would also like a built-in SOC dashboard for managing multiple Fortinet firewalls."
"The graphical user interface of Fortinet's FortiGate product does not function well with text-based interfaces."
"It would be good if they had fewer updates."
"There is a need for enhancement with the signature management, improving the datasheet numbers, and scalability issues."
"The logging details need to be improved."
"Bandwidth usage in reporting could be improved for Fortinet FortiGate."
"Memory and processing power: These devices are strictly for small business applications."
"The solution could be improved if there was a better way to report. The reporting functionality is not really good. Even though it's not the major function. Maybe adding a way to make a custom report."
"The solution should be more user-friendly."
"Specifically on the user experience, sometimes the set up of things, such as the VPN SSL, takes a lot of time to load and a lot of time to get up and running on every session."
"The solution should be more user-friendly."
"Technical support was very bad because the supplier who sold it to us wasn't very supportive, and he wouldn't giving us direct links to the OEM."
"The pricing is too high."
"Some features that could be improved are advanced threat protection, sandboxing, and vulnerability management."
"We would like to see ready-made profiles to cover most users' needs."
"They can improve the dynamic of the input of IPs from outside."
"I purchased a Netgate firewall, an SG-4100, which is a $600 device, intending to make it a solid piece of my home lab and support the project. It died in one and a half years."
"More documentation would be great, especially on new features because sometimes, when new features come out, you don't get to understand them right off the bat."
"Network monitoring and device inventory could use some improvements. I'm using SpiceWorks for this because it never really worked in pfSense."
"It was impossible to get some USB stuff to work."
"I receive popup notifications indicating that we have run out of memory due to some unknown reason, despite using only 20% of the device's memory."
"The first time we deployed it, it was kind of tricky."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of Fortinet FortiGate is affordable. Most of our customers are on a three-year license to use the solution. All the features and support are included in the price."
"When I look around at other products, such as Sophos, Fortinet FortiGate is 20% to 30% more expensive with our current cost."
"The platform offers a reasonable price point compared to its competitors."
"The Fortinet FortiGate security features cost approximately $1,500 a year. The firewall itself doesn't have a recurring cost. It's the security features on top of that that you pay for."
"The price of FortiGate is reasonable as I plan to buy new switches. The initial gadgets are already booted, and the pricing seems normal on the market. As for additional costs, I haven't subscribed to many extra features, so I'm only using what I need. Last year, I renewed the support for three years, which can sometimes be expensive but depends on the security benefits and how it helps us."
"They need to be competitive with other solutions."
"I give the pricing a nine out of ten."
"It is somewhat expensive compared to other solutions such as Sophos."
"This cost is between 3,000 and 5,000 euros per year, so some other solutions are cheaper and the pricing should be improved."
"The pricing is too high."
"This solution provides enterprise-level features at a fraction of the cost of an enterprise firewall."
"It's highly cost-effective for both the average consumer and business users."
"It is open source."
"The tool is flexible; even the free, open-source version offers many features. From a cost perspective, even the subscription model for commercial support isn't too costly. However, it's important to have someone knowledgeable about Netgate pfSense to take advantage of it. While there are online resources, a professional or someone experienced can get much more out of the solution. I've heard that the IPS/IDS licenses and other features can be costly."
"pfSense is excellent for a low total cost of ownership. pfSense pricing is extremely competitive, and it delivers exactly what is advertised."
"pfSense's pricing or licensing model is very affordable."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"PFSENSE turns out to be very economical, the license is free and for little money you get very good support"
