A stable solution with an intuitive interface and quick customer service
I have been working with Fortinet FortiGate, WatchGuard, Sophos, and SonicWall. I'm not as comfortable with SonicWall because of their UI and limitations. I prefer Fortinet above all other options. When it comes to configuration, I am confident in my ability to handle various tasks, including creating policies such as firewall rules, web policies, and application policies. Additionally, I can configure VPNs and implement load balancing, among other tasks. Overall, I feel much more comfortable working with Fortinet. Fortinet has made significant improvements by integrating AI with firewalls for threat analysis and prevention. In the past 2-3 years, they have launched FortiSASE and SIEM, and they also provide SOC services. Both Palo Alto and Fortinet FortiGate are excellent. While Fortinet FortiGate comes at higher prices, the functionality and support justify the cost. They promptly resolve firmware issues and inform all support providers about configuration changes.

Advanced threat prevention has protected our perimeter and simplifies daily security operations
Check Point Quantum Force (NGFW) can be improved in several areas. First, the interface could be a little more intuitive for new users. The Smart Console is powerful, but it has a steep learning curve when you start using it. Some simple functions for common tasks would help. Second, the initial setup and configuration take quite a bit of time and expertise. It would be helpful if there were more guides, wizards, or templates to speed that up. Third, the price model could be more transparent and flexible. The license cost can add up quickly, specifically when you want to add more advanced features. Finally, I would appreciate seeing better integration with some third-party security tools we use. Right now, we have to do a lot of manual work to make everything talk to each other. Overall, these are minor things. The core product is really solid and does what it is supposed to do very well. The documentation could be more comprehensive in some areas. When we run into issues, the documentation does not have clear answers, so we end up contacting support. Speaking of support, the response time could be faster sometimes. We have had cases where we need help with a certain security issue, and it takes longer than we would prefer to get a response. As for features, it would be nice to have more general reporting options so we can customize reports for different teams and stakeholders without having to do manual work afterward. One more thing, better mobile access to the dashboard would be helpful. Sometimes we need to check on security alerts when we are away from the office, and the mobile experience is not as smooth as it could be. Again, these are improvements that would make it even better, not issues with the core product itself.

Very good IPS, anti-malware, and VPN capabilities
This product has now served more than 30 years in the market and has evolved tremendously over the years. Check Point administration and management help you through visibility and performance. Even though its price is high, you have one management platform that has a great user experience and is easy to use. The log viewer and its indexing is especially useful. It can lower your administration time and can also be used with an API. If you want a perfect and centralized solution that gives you fast access to all of your network areas, this is the right product. The new AI functions will speed up the administration even more.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The best features of this tool include threat protection, email filtering, and web filtering, and FortiAnalyzer's integration with the firewall and FortiSASE is beneficial."
"It is a scalable solution."
"The most valuable features of the FortiGate firewall include SSL inspection, VPN functionality, and threat intelligence features for preventing threats."
"What I like the most is the configuration and that it's simple, and straightforward to maintain."
"The strengths of Fortinet FortiGate include network security, VPN, site-to-site tunnels, client VPN solutions, two-factor authentication for VPN clients, and SD-WAN for branch level. We have implemented these solutions for various customers."
"The most useful features in Fortinet FortiGate are the security features, where we can analyze what kind of traffic is inside our network, and we also utilize ZTNA for limiting and managing our network access."
"User-friendly and affordable security solution that's recommended for SMB customers. This solution has good technical support."
"Overall, this is a very good solution and I personally haven't had any problems with it."
"Today, Check Point invests a lot in technology, and that gives us the best security and clear confidence that we are working with a first-world company that will always be at the forefront of security and analysis."
"It is a good firewall and has returned good performance, and we are happy with the product."
"The Threat Management feature makes it very easy to detect the vulnerabilities and other factors. We can make new policy according to it. Policy creation is very simple in Check Point. Because the logs are very good in Check Point Firewall, this reduces our work with the reports that we are getting from the Threat Management. It is very convenient for us to use the reports to make new policies for security and other things."
"The best features Check Point Quantum Force (NGFW) offers are its advanced protection features such as IPS, anti-bot, sandboxing, and it reduces the need for multiple point solutions."
"There are several ways to implement it."
"With the implementation of Check Point, great improvements have been provided to the infrastructure, maintaining order within the organization."
"They utilize various gateway features, including Identity as a Service (IDaaS), anti-spam, antivirus, and other security measures, effectively creating a robust defense against a wide range of potential risks."
"The solution's best features include a packet-filtering firewall that examines packets in isolation and does not know the packet's context, a stateful inspection firewall that examines network traffic to determine whether one packet is related to another packet, a proxy firewall that inspects packets at the application layer, and a Next-Generation Firewall that uses a multilayered approach to integrate enterprise firewall capabilities with an intrusion prevention system and application control."
"Its most outstanding feature is content filtering."
"Technical support has been good."
"The product offers fairly good centralized administration and monitoring with decent capabilities that allow the administrator to have relevent control over devices."
"The application control of the solution is something that I find very valuable."
"VPN clients are easy to use and deploy."
"It allowed us to have content filtering and commercially available firewall perimeter management that had been available since 1997, was very functional, and was one of the best brands that had been securing the network."

Cons

"WAN load-balancing could be a lot better at detecting when a link is poor or inconsistent, and not just flat out dead."
"Currently, without the additional reporting module, we only have access to basic reporting."
"The UI/UX experience can be a little better."
"They sometimes hide some features and if you want to enable them, you have to go in the CLI, enable the feature and configure it through the CLI. Customers, typically, like everything to be done by the GUI."
"However, the problem is that their subscription price is very high."
"Whitelisting could be better."
"The system can slow down when inspections are carried out."
"They can add automation for monitoring and policy optimization on the firewall. I think using AI to do some optimization on the policies would be beneficial, such as providing alerts about policies that haven't been used for a long time or identifying overlapping policies."
"We have run into an interface expansion limitation, and thus it would be helpful if products lower in the stack would offer more interface expansion options."
"Check Point has actually failed twice within the last year."
"There are two major areas that need to be improved. The study material for Check Point needs to be improved, as well as the cost for certification."
"Geo-blocking would be very useful. There are too many attempts to infiltrate by non-country users. I can block access by IP address or IP network, however, a country-level blocking would be more useful and much quicker to implement."
"The license model itself can get complicated because there are different tiers and add-ons depending on what features you want."
"Their technical support can be better."
"Although very efficient, the product could be developed in a way that does not take a lot more system resources."
"Check Point, being our perimeter firewall, has failed quite a few times mainly when handling BGP."
"Every time we made a change, the policy took about three minutes to apply, and obviously, when there were emergency changes or changes that we needed that were escalated, they were not modified very, very quickly."
"Pricing is sometimes challenging, although it brings a lot of features."
"It should have excellent integration with the other security tools."
"The reporting from the file or reporting from mobile access needs improvement. The solution, in general, could use better reporting tools."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of FortiGate is good."
"We are currently evaluating a Palo Alto solution, and the pricing could be a reason for going for Palo Alto."
"I pay €1,200 per year for the license along with Fortinet's 81E firewall appliance. I would rate this pricing as 3/5 stars, and I believe the price is reasonably similar to its competitors in the market, being somewhere in the middle."
"The price is really low. It's cheap in comparison to the cost of Cisco or CheckPoint, for example."
"The license for Fortinet FortiGate is affordable in my country."
"The pricing for this solution is reasonable."
"I rate the pricing an eight and a half on a scale of one to ten, where one is low, and ten is high."
"The price of Fortinet FortiGate is reasonable for an SME."
"We pay the licensing fees on a yearly basis."
"Comparatively, Check Point pricing is a little high. However, if you have that budget, I would recommend anybody to go with Check Point."
"There are competitors that have more expensive solutions than Check Point NGFW, such as Palo Alto. There are times when Check Point NGFW can have good offerings with a three-year license. The presence of Palo Alto has been heavily invested in marketing."
"It is a notably expensive product in our country compared to FortiGate and other servers."
"Pricing is good. The price is very reasonable for enterprise customers."
"Check Point brings good value for the money and is competitive in the market."
"The price may be perceived as relatively high when compared to the features and capabilities they provide."
"The licensing includes the cost of support."
