An easy-to-use solution with good technical support services
We use the solution to manage virtual tape volumes The solution is easy to use. The solution's pricing could be better. We have been using the solution for eight years. I rate the solution's stability an eight out of ten. We have 20 solution users in our organization. Also, we plan to…

Has supported enterprise projects consistently but pricing remains a challenge for broader adoption
We are system integrators and resell the HCI solution. We have worked with Dell VPLEX for approximately two to three years. We have been in several RFCs, and Dell VPLEX is implemented in the enterprise segment only. The solution is expensive and requires more budget, so people in the SMB segment do not prefer it. We typically recommend Dell VPLEX for customers who already work with other Dell products.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"package that manages all of your tapes. Create/write/catalog, retention, delete. There are queries and reports, which are needed to know when/where/length keeping, etc., in order to track them or find out current status."
"CA 1 is our intake management system, and it's just one of the best products out there."
"With this product, it all becomes automatic: locating the data, backing up the data, restoring the data. We can automate all that with it."
"Literally everything about the product is great!"
"The tapes are mounted automatically. You can read a tape automatically without waiting for someone to insert it."
"It has become easy to backup and archive all our system data and financial data. It helps us mainly in managing the backup of our databases, and it is easy to retrieve that data and find it in a secure place."
"The Vault Management function keeps track of where a tape should be and tells the operators which tapes should be sent offsite, and which ones should return."
"The solution is stable."
"Dell's technical support is awesome. We received instant support from EMC as long as we had an active contract."
"The business continuity is sorted, as the data is in two data centers, i.e., readable and writable, and if one side goes down, there is no downtime and the other side continues non-disruptively."
"Mobility enables us to carry out an internal migration of data."
"With VPLEX, we are able to automate this process where failovers between sites now occur automatically."
"The support is good, and you don't have to wait long before things get done."
"Its mirroring capabilities allow for data to be mirrored across two different data centers, so if one center were to crash or fail, the other center could take over and keep everything running smoothly."
"For a new application setup, it worked like a charm."
"VPLEX/VE is an amazing feat of engineering."

Cons

"Sometimes it does not detect all chaining errors and the reporting on them could be improved as well."
"When we want to interface the CA 1 product with other vendors, IBM or others, it is difficult to interface it with them, because you need some exits, you need to compile some assemblers."

"The product itself is fairly complex so the install is as well."

"Installation and customization could be improved."
"Initial setup was a little bit complex when connecting to VMAX."
"These are all pretty trivial for larger customers but VNXe as a main production storage array running a workload important enough to give it a multi-site stretched vSphere cluster is something I think is unlikely to be present in those customers."
"The price is a problem with EMC due to the fact that it's more expensive than the other vendors."
"Due to the bug with Broadcom, we have had a massive crisis on VPLEX. This little bug has caused roughly one thousand machines to go down."
"The solution is expensive and requires more budget, so people in the SMB segment do not prefer it."
"The administration is difficult, so we want to add hyper-converged infrastructure."
"There can be delays in getting performance reports."
"The licensing model for enterprise storage (EMC VMAX) and integrating the solution into the actual storage frames instead of a separate product."
