Effortless network component identification, provides API details, and an easy setup
We need to discover anything in the network and ensure that the discovered data is moved into the CMDB for asset management The best part is that whenever there is an outpost or any particular network, it can identify servers, routers, switches, etc. It immediately understands which component it…

A stable and clever solution, but it is very complex and it needs a lot of improvements
There are a lot of things that need improvement. Software recognition, software licensing, software compliance, data inputs, reporting, and support are some of the areas. It needs a discovery tool of its own. You have to get that from other Micro Focus products, which means you have to pay more to get those products.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature of the solution stems from the fact that it is easy to install and deploy."
"The solution is very stable and powerful."
"The speed at which it's able to collect a wide-range of information, then make it useful for you, like asset management, knowledge management, and incident management."
"I've used other discovery tools, but I found BMC Helix Discovery to be more UI-friendly, and that's the most valuable feature of the solution."
"BMC Helix Discovery comprehends the infrastructure you've procured and deployed within your environment."
"I like the artificial intelligence and machine learning that it uses in the solution. Because once the solution discovers all the assets, all the infrastructure, and all the dependencies between services, it learns how it works. So, it learns to predict when a problem is going to happen. It becomes predictive in an autonomous way."
"The most valuable feature is Windows proxy. We now need to install an additional link proxy server in Windows. The proxy is available as an outpost in the Elastic store. That is the advanced feature is added. There are many other features which can be used once we discover them. One time I was scanning the servers and all, going to data from additional based on the additional features, including advanced data like score upper display data successfully discover servers. There are many things good things that can be implemented using it while we haven’t installed those yet."
"The most valuable feature of BMC Helix Discovery is it operates well. It is well known and has gained recognition for its software."
"This product can be customized according to the needs of any company."
"It is stable and scalable."
"We have now automatic and immediate control of assets usage, and we can now better manage our assets pool and get benefits through that."

Cons

"BMC is agentless discovery, followed by hybrid discovery, which performs discovery across clouds, on-premises, and then dynamic service modeling."
"I would like to see a lower price and better technical support."
"The product falls short compared to storage discovery mechanisms offered by Tenable or ServiceNow ITOM. In the market, there are various applications available that provide different sets of features. Its drawback is that it doesn't give the database configuration customers need out of the box. Additionally, the classification of storage virtualization is relatively lacking. Therefore, there is room for improvement, particularly in the database areas."
"There is still room for improvement in terms of stability."
"What would make BMC Helix Discovery better is if it had more client-side discovery features, for example, printers and desktops. Right now, it's focused more on data center discovery, so if it had additional features focused on the client-side discovery, that would be great. In the next release of BMC Helix Discovery, I'd like more client-side discovery features such as desktop discovery, printer discovery, and other IP-based client-side discovery features. The solution can discover desktops and printers, but there's still room for improvement on the client side."
"A review of end of life data would be nice."
"The support from BMC Helix Discovery can improve, it takes a long time before we receive any feedback. It can take days to months sometimes."
"There isn't much that could be improved. The solution is pretty thorough, very easy to implement, and very easy to operate."
"There are a lot of things that need improvement. Software recognition, software licensing, software compliance, data inputs, reporting, and support are some of the areas."
"The usability of this product is still out-of-date and could be improved. The interface could be improved."
"The technology used is outdated, the interface is outdated, the database is outdated, everything is outdated."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have a perpetual license for the solution."
"The solution offers yearly licenses."
"It's not a cheap product. But the benefits it delivers is that it's a fair price."
"Operating cost is actually high compared to other products, actually. It's a little expensive only, but it's very good than other products."
"I've heard that the solution was expensive earlier but is now much cheaper than its competitors."
"The licensing fee is very low."
"The licenses are very complex and quite costly."
"The price was fair compared to competitors. BMC is very affordable. There are optional consulting services to assist with implementation."
"From my experience, Asset Manager is expensive."
