I am a graduate student at University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Computer Science. I am working on my thesis under the collective advice of Prof. Tanya Berger-Wolf, UIC and Emre Kiciman, Microsoft Research. I am a part of the IBEIS(Image Based Ecological Information System) team. Information about IBEIS can be found at www.ibeis.org.
My major current research envisions building a population estimation model for animals using pictures scraped from social media alone. This system would help governments across the world to keep a tab on the number of animals which could be critically endangered. My advisors Prof. Tanya Berger Wolf, UIC and Emre Kiciman, Microsoft Research have collectively guided me to make sure that I account for self-reporting or behavioral bias of human photographers when it comes to taking pictures of animals. You can read more about the project ideas on my GitHub Wiki Page at: github.com/smenon8/AnimalWildlifeEstimator/wiki and know in detail about the existing API’s available (partial list, page still under construction) at: smenon8.github.io/AnimalWildlifeEstimator/.
My areas of interest is mainly machine learning, statistical analysis of big data-sets and broadly in data science.
My go-to language is Python and I aspire to build a career in Machine Learning and applications of Machine Learning in the Computational Biology Domain.
