What advice do you have for others considering FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW)?

I use Fortinet FortiGate primarily as a physical appliance; the VM deployment is minimal. My impression of the dynamic segmentation feature in Fortinet FortiGate is that while some customers use it, I believe it is not granular enough. It can separate VLANs, but it cannot separate individual users. We use it with FortiSwitch or AP to expand Fortinet FortiGate ports to every switch port. Regarding stability, I have experienced performance issues with Fortinet FortiGate. Sometimes it does not work correctly in certain situations, such as DNS or URL categories, where it might block incorrectly. In assessing the performance of the hardware-assisted DDoS protection in Fortinet FortiGate, I think it does not work effectively in critical events, as DDoS protection is challenging due to the number of attackers. My clients use Fortinet FortiGate in the boundary and border gateway as a border firewall, positioned between the internet and the company. We also use it for VPN and IPsec VPN to connect remote office sites. Additionally, I have a use case for MES in high technology where it blocks malware in machines such as those used for producing semiconductors. In the future, I would like to see improvements with Fortinet FortiGate, especially as all firewalls emphasize AI or machine learning. I do not see significant use of AI in Fortinet FortiGate, whereas I can see how AI improves functionality in Palo Alto. I mainly work with firewalls from Palo Alto Networks. Apart from Palo Alto, I have worked with Check Point, but I used it very minimally. I would rate this review with an overall score of nine.

You can play with it and see almost all the features in action. That's an easy thing to actually test. Obviously, you cannot connect it to your network and see things live in your case, but it is still a good example of how things work.

Some customers are not accepting to install the applications, and sometimes in the guest tunnel, content filtering should be blocked, such as domain blocking for Gmail, as users access only their particular consumer account. If they try to access personal accounts, it should be blocked, requiring configuration settings with deep inspection that needs certificates installed in all systems, which is a time-consuming process that some customers do not accept, questioning the need for installing certificates without deep inspection.The licensing model for FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) depends on various types such as the earlier UTM license, FortiCare, and Enterprise license. The Enterprise license includes all features such as FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, and converter. The UTM licenses include only UTM features such as AV, web filtering, application control, and IPS, while FortiCare is only for hardware.

I would recommend FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) to others. Despite some issues with upgrades and vulnerabilities, Fortinet quickly addresses concerns. Overall, on a scale of one to ten, I would rate FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) as an eight.

They could potentially follow Kaspersky's example, which provided a more affordable pricing model for students and educational institutes. As a product, I would rate FortiGate around seven out of ten.

For very small companies, with five to ten users and where cost is a concern, I would not recommend going with FortiGate. If only cost is a concern, then it would not be recommended. It is a little bit expensive - the entry-level model is the FZ FortiGate. At the same time, Sophos XZ 86 is an entry-level model, which is more suitable for very small networks. I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Since implementing FortiGate Next Generation Firewall, we have not experienced any attack or cyber threat on our company's network. With the solution, we have been able to proactively monitor the network and take preventive measures on time. Our company finds the product reliable in mitigating all kinds of threats. Our company expects some AI capabilities from Fortinet solutions. I would advise FortiGate Next Generation Firewall to others as a reliable solution. I would also advise other professionals to run tests with the product as per their requirements before adopting it. The solution has excellent security policies. As a security gateway, we need to be much more stable than adding more features. FortiGate Next Generation Firewall comes in two versions, namely, the hardware version and the cloud version. For the on-premises version, hardware is to be implemented on-site; for the cloud, it's a cloud security solution. So it depends on which version your customer is using. The licensing is very different for the on-prem and the cloud solution. When it comes to complex solutions, I highly recommend FortiGate Next Generation Firewall. Customers looking for SD-WAN and good application control should go for FortiGate Next Generation Firewall. Customers looking for high stability should avoid the solution. Overall, I rate FortiGate Next Generation Firewall an eight out of ten.
