Great user experience, available on mobile, and is easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "Perimeter 81 is very pretty."
  • "I don't know if it is technically feasible, however, if the Desktop App could be used as a Web App or a Chrome Extension it would be very nice."

What is our primary use case?

I'm using it for the VPN, I work from a home office and need to access data from different websites. I'm a front-end web developer for a famous brand, working remotely from another country, and the content I have to access must be from different countries. There are some internal tools we must use too, and we must access them with a VPN. Some of these tools are on mobile too, so we also have to install VPN solutions on mobile phones. I have to use a tool that we can access multiple VPNs and switch regions with ease.

How has it helped my organization?

We use some VPN solutions, and Perimeter 81 has the best user experience for desktop or mobile. The other solutions have more steps to set up, are more complicated and it was not a good experience. Unfortunately, I can't use Perimeter 81 for all VPN use cases, due to the company's policy, however, when I can, I always choose it.

I have to use it on my phone too, and my smartphone was not compatible with the other VPN solutions (old Android version), but Perimeter 81 works on old mobile phones and is very light.

What is most valuable?

The best points of Perimeter 81 are the:

- User experience
- Design
- Ease of use
- Support for mobile and desktop
- Very light mobile app

The other VPN tools have some old interface with a not great user experience. I use a Mac and the interface looks like an old Windows App. Perimeter 81 is very pretty. My phone is an old Android version (I cannot upgrade right now) and I could not use the other tools to access the VPN because their two-step authentication app could not run on my phone. Perimeter 81 app works on old phones and is very lightweight. The battery consumption is very low.

What needs improvement?

I am very satisfied with the product right now. I don't know if it is technically feasible, however, if the Desktop App could be used as a Web App or a Chrome Extension it would be very nice. It would help a lot if I could click a link with the right-click and select from a range of options like: "Open a with VPN: Network main" and that tab would open with VPN activated only on that. And then I could refresh the tab with the VPN on or off. When I access a URL, the Extension could have an option like: "Reload current tab with VPN".

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes, I did use a different solution, however, I didn't make a full switch as some tools we use can only be accessed with specific VPN tools. That said, when I can choose, I prefer Perimeter 81 due to its ease of use.

Great SAML and SCIM support with the ability to deploy site-2-site tunnels with specific IP restrictions
Pros and Cons
  • "Distributing the agent was very simple, allowing us to enforce security posture on our devices (i.e. S1, Disk-encryption, etc.)."
  • "The platform still lacks relevant dashboards and the ability to customize them based on our needs."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for secure remote access and access policy governance.

As part of our SOC2 Type 2 audit preparation, we wanted a solution that will be able to enforce secure passwords and two-factor authentication on our remote access to company development and production environments (hosted in GCP).

We were using a different VPN provider yet struggled with getting those policies in place. As timelines were very aggressive, we decided to look for a managed service or a SaaS offering, and Perimeter 81 was very quick to respond and provide a test account.

How has it helped my organization?

We were finalizing our SOC2 Type 2 audit and decided to move to a different remote access vendor.

We were able to implement Perimeter 81 within an hour with all the required services (SSO) and infrastructure (GCP and SaaS applications).

Distributing the agent was very simple, allowing us to enforce security posture on our devices (i.e. S1, Disk-encryption, etc.).

The team is now evaluating the Firewall-as-a-Service capabilities as well as the Secure Web Gateways to see if we require any additional policies in place as we're rapidly growing.

What is most valuable?

The multiple geographical access points with dedicated IP addresses allow the team to deploy site-2-site tunnels with specific IP restrictions as well as configure IP whitelisting on many of our SaaS applications.

The plug-and-play Wireguard site-2-site connector was a great add-on as it allowed the team to just run a script and have our entire GCP network get connected to Perimeter 81 without any manual configuration.

SAML and SCIM support made our life much easier as every new user just logs into the account, gets the correct permissions based on their SSO group enrolment, and is immediately able to access relevant resources, SaaS applications, and environments.

What needs improvement?

The platform still lacks relevant dashboards and the ability to customize them based on our needs.

We would love to also see real-time usage and traffic data as well as be able to build reports.

Adding better QoS and traffic shaping to the product will be a nice add-on as it'll allow our admins to prioritize some traffic over others and identify users that are heavy traffic users in the platform.

We need the ability to connect the agent prior to computer login. The ability to allow a silent connection (i.e. the agent is completely invisible to the user) could be cool for bigger organizations.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for over a month.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

So far, the solution looks good and stable. There are no downtimes or disconnections.

How are customer service and support?

They offer great chat support. Technical support is responding within minutes with helpful answers.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've used NordVPN, Cisco AnyConnect, OpenVPN, and FortiClient.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy to set up thanks to a helpful and intuitive UI as well as plug-and-play connectors for the site-2-site deployment.

What was our ROI?

The ROI is very good, as we were able to do a cut-off within a week and using it since.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It was great to be able to implement everything without any assistance and within an hour.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated FortiClient, NordVPN, and OpenVPN.

What other advice do I have?

The solution has great UI/UX and a super helpful support and documentation center.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Easy to use, fast, and secure
Pros and Cons
  • "Perimeter 81 has increased my security and privacy while maintaining solid internet performance."
  • "The overall UI could be improved and updated to bring a simpler feel to the application."

What is our primary use case?

Primarily I use the product for work purposes. My work environment is currently remote, therefore, I tend to move between private and public networks pretty often. Having this solution for public networks is key in ensuring that you are staying secure while browsing or using work-related software or services. While working from home, people tend to travel and never realize that public networks are very insecure and they allow hackers to access information from your computer very easily, especially if you don't have a VPN service.

How has it helped my organization?

Perimeter 81 has increased my security and privacy while maintaining solid internet performance.

Without this software, I tend to always be concerned with security and privacy while browsing the web, however, when I'm using this software, I tend to feel more comfortable browsing knowing that I'm covered. It has made working from home feel more secure while not impacting computer performance.

Many other services that I've used heavily affect the overall performance of my computer, however Perimeter 81 doesn't affect it at all.

What is most valuable?

The Perimeter 81 VPN is fast and secure. It also is very easy to use, with a simple yet elegant UI. I like how this software will automatically turn on my VPN and connect whenever I hop on my machine. The Always On VPN really can't be beaten.

While I'm using this service, I never even notice that I'm using it (due to the overall performance of the program), which is really what you want when you're using a VPN. This has to be the most valuable part of this software, along with the user-friendly interface.

What needs improvement?

I don't think that this service can be improved. Speed and privacy could always be improved, however, the current product doesn't lack these criteria. I also think that the overall UI could be improved and updated to bring a simpler feel to the application, but again, the software doesn't truly lack in this category.

Aside from this, the service is really pleasant to use and I've never once had the thought of uninstalling the application. While it would be great to have the ability to move the location of the VPN, I don't think that this is required to increase the overall performance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used this solution for about two months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've gotten a great first impression in terms of stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability has given me a great first impression.

How are customer service and support?

I haven't had to reach out to support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've used other services. That said, I didn't have a great experience with their UI and performance lacking abilities.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was a breeze.

What about the implementation team?

I'm not too sure if we had assistance or not.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This service is very affordable and worth it for what you actually get out of the software.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I didn't look into other options before choosing this service, however, I don't think there is a need to at the moment.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good security and privacy capabilities with excellent support
Pros and Cons
  • "The feature that I have found to be most valuable is the reputation that the company has regarding privacy. Nowadays, this is critical, especially when you do all of your work online."
  • "I have found that the log-in/out process takes quite some time."

What is our primary use case?

I needed the solution to attach it to the vendor's file in our accounting software. The customer service team provided such an efficient and fast service. We have an account manager, which is great as we get personalized attention. I asked for the W-9 form once, and it was provided to me. I was not able to download it and then forgot about it. I asked for it again, and without any hesitation, the team provided it again. They were not rude about it. I later realized and apologized for asking for it twice.

How has it helped my organization?

Our organization is more secure with Perimeter81's Virtual Private Network (VPN). We manage sensitive information of clients. In my department, we manage bank and credit card information. It is a lot of responsibility to have access to that kind of data. Now that our company has implemented Perimeter81's services with the VPN, personally, I feel more secure when navigating through these different platforms. It is a great investment for today's workplaces - especially when we handle critical information virtually.

What is most valuable?

The feature that I have found to be most valuable is the reputation that the company has regarding privacy. Nowadays, this is critical, especially when you do all of your work online.

Similarly, I find that the work that Perimeter 81's customer service team does is very valuable. I have heard from our IT department that Perimeter 81's team is quite knowledgeable and efficient. These are important traits and they describe not only the company's service but the quality of its product as well. So far, our company is very happy with the product.

What needs improvement?

Overall the product is very efficient. However, personally, there is something that I dislike. I have found that the log-in/out process takes quite some time. I usually click on the app, and it asks me to login in through the web, and then after I log in it takes me back to the app. It seems to me that I should be able to log out without having to leave the app. I do like that it connects automatically/logs in as soon as I sign on. I am not sure why login in is easier than logout.

For how long have I used the solution?

The resolution took a couple of hours to be solved, around six hours.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good.

How are customer service and support?

The experience with technical support was great. The team is professional, polite, and efficient.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This is the first time that we used a VPN in the company.

How was the initial setup?

I'm not able to say what the setup is like.

What about the implementation team?

I'm not able to say if we had any outside assistance.

What was our ROI?

I'm not able to say what the ROI would be.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I am not able to advise on the cost/pricing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

This decision was made by the IT department, however, naturally, they did evaluate other vendors

User-friendly with a seamless login experience and can scale well
Pros and Cons
  • "Logging back into Perimeter 81 is relatively user-friendly as I just need to re-type my Windows credentials in to access the VPN."
  • "One of the more negative experiences using Perimeter 81 is the fact that I am logged off after a pre-determined amount of time which cuts off access to some of my company's resources."

What is our primary use case?

My work started using Perimeter 81 as a replacement for our previous VPN provider. Our previous solution was Sophos.

We are a company that is around 75% fully remote, and we are an ISO 27001 Certified legal tech solution provider to some of the largest law firms and health care providers in the UK and North America. For that reason, ensuring our internal and client data is of the highest priority.

We use the Perimeter 81 solution to secure all of our internal cloud-based systems as well as the demo system for the products we sell to our customers.

How has it helped my organization?

With the previous solution, we had to have an app on our phone that would generate PIN numbers that would auto-generate. It was cumbersome and not very user-friendly.

This solution has allowed for a more seamless login experience when accessing my files, and from a user standpoint, it is fantastic. I am barely cognizant of the fact that Perimeter is running in the background. This was not the case with our previous VPN solution.

What is most valuable?

Direct login using Microsoft network credentials and no extra applications or manual inputting of PIN codes is probably the best feature of using Perimeter 81. Our last VPN solution required that users manually input PIN codes to confirm two-factor authentication, and the process was not very user-friendly. Moreover, logging back into Perimeter 81 is relatively user-friendly as I just need to re-type my Windows credentials in to access the VPN. Of course, having to regain access to the VPN is kind of annoying, however, it is still a much better user experience than our previous solution.

What needs improvement?

One of the more negative experiences using Perimeter 81 is the fact that I am logged off after a pre-determined amount of time which cuts off access to some of my company's resources. It's probably a configuration thing on our end, yet frustrating nonetheless. If there was a way to have quicker access to the Perimeter login page, that would probably be of great assistance when re-logging into the VPN. For instance, if the pop-up for Perimeter 81 allowed me to log in from there, that would probably streamline the process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for about six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product seems stable to me!

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have not interacted with customer service.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Sophos and switched. I am not sure why.

How was the initial setup?

I am not sure how the setup process was handled.

What was our ROI?

I have no idea if we have looked into monitoring for ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I do not advise anyone at my company on any of those topics.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I am not aware of the other options that were evaluated if any.

What other advice do I have?

I really like Perimeter 81 as opposed to our previous VPN solution. It is a much more streamlined and user-friendly experience.

Great segmentation, makes it easy to add users and offers good uptime
Pros and Cons
  • "The benefits are really built into the underlying protocol, however, Perimeter81 makes these available in a user-friendly way."
  • "There is a very small amount of downtime."

What is our primary use case?

I am a remote developer and I use Perimeter81 as a VPN to access development and UAT servers for booking systems that service tier1 airlines. Those servers are mostly on the cloud, however, some are physical. We use AWS servers and physical servers in Dublin, Manchester, Amsterdam, Bejing, and Altlanta. We have individual team members spread out possibly 15-20 countries that need to be managed so it's important that we can be grouped and organized in a manner that allows us to authorize not just depending on our location but also our roles.

How has it helped my organization?

Our organization is made up of permanent and contract employees both onsite in our office worldwide and in remote individual locations across the globe. Perimeter81 allows us to develop software as a service (SaaS) collaboratively in a safe and efficient manner. We can authorize our web services not just by our team members' roles but also by our team members' locations based on the IP addresses on an individual level but also based on the group role for that member. The benefits are really built into the underlying protocol, however, Perimeter81 makes these available in a user-friendly way.

What is most valuable?

As a virtual private network, it enables us to communicate through development groups that segment our organization through the correct allocation of bandwidth and easily configured groups.

Being able to add individuals to groups is the single most valuable feature, simple as it may seem. This combined with the underlying protocol makes for a powerful and easy-to-use feature for our organization. Adding and removing individuals is simple and easy to do which adds to the overall convenience and usability.

What needs improvement?

There is a very small amount of downtime. As a general user of the network, I'm not sure if this is down to maintenance time needed by our own network engineers who support our organization or indeed if it is up to Perimeter81 and its maintenance. What would be helpful is if this downtime was reduced. This may or may not involve some collaboration with Perimeter81 engineers and our own organization's engineers to ensure more up time, although I'm not complaining as this is very infrequent.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for over one year now.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is highly scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I don't directly deal with technical support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Openpath was our old solution. We switched simply for better service and more uptime.

How was the initial setup?

I did not handle the initial setup.

What about the implementation team?

I did not handle the initial setup.

What was our ROI?

I don't know anything about the ROI - it's not my area.

Highly scalable and unique advantage of SD-WAN
Pros and Cons
  • "SD-WAN is one of the primary solutions offered by Perimeter 81."
  • "One of our challenges is ensuring the security of our cloud-based operations."

What is our primary use case?

I use Perimeter 81 primarily for VPN connections and work and home banking. Additionally, I use it for some oil and gas applications. You should also consider using it for SD-WAN solutions. In fact, SD-WAN is one of the primary solutions offered by Perimeter 81.

In order to minimize costs, you can use a zero-trust security model. We also use VPN to interconnect many branches, for example, here in Nigeria, for an operator in the oil and gas industry. We have a high frequency in our network.

What is most valuable?

For us, SD-WAN is the most valuable feature. They provide a unique advantage for banking purposes and are also different from other solutions. VPN is good for security.

What needs improvement?

One of our challenges is ensuring the security of our cloud-based operations. We place a high priority on security and take measures to protect our data. We avoid using public cloud services and instead rely on data centers to collect data for both small and large branches.

In the next release, I would like to see more improvement in security capabilities.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Perimeter 81 for ten years. I am working with the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a very stable solution. It efficiently ensures security. We also use VPN to touch cloud and ensure secure information. However, for a specific company, we may need to improve security. The code is updated biweekly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Perimeter 81 depends on your equipment and routers. Different solutions may require different approaches. It is also a PLS to control.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service was good. We needed to make some configurations, and it was the same as with other providers because it's a solution we use.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. The deployment process is different for each project, and it depends on the project's scope, such as the type of network and the kind of project. If you use IP and POS, it's different from if you don't use them.

What about the implementation team?

It's possible to implement it in-house, or we can get some help. As for the technical aspects, we have six people who are required for the deployment and maintenance. We plan to increase the number of users for Permieter 81 in our company.

What was our ROI?

The system should think about how to maximize the ROI and minimize the OpEx cost for the customer. When you use a good solution, you can decrease your supply costs, increase engineering, reduce repair costs, and increase product stability. It's a win-win solution where the customer wins, and you win.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely recommend using Perimeter 81. Overall, I would rate the product a nine out of ten, but I would like to improve its security.

Helpful technical support with great single sign-on functionality and a seamless login experience
Pros and Cons
  • "It helps to quickly get access to the pages I need."
  • "Currently, I am not able to define a different country or location, which can result in negative experiences as the tool is being recognized by websites and this can make it difficult to access them or force me to disable the program temporarily."

What is our primary use case?

The solution provides access to our own environments. Our environments are usually restricted by IP from external access, so I cannot access it from a regular internet connection. I can with this product.

We also have a system in place that allows us to access to our own SSO login for our customer environments, without having to use individual logins for all of our customers. By doing so, we protect our customer environments from external public access, which is vital to our customers - especially in the onboarding phase of the lifecycle.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps to quickly get access to the pages I need.

The overall login experience is seamless and usually also has no issues. I rarely have to restart the service.

The service offers decent speed without interruptions, which allows me to work and focus without distractions or interruptions to what I am trying to achieve. This is reducing my work stress a lot as switching focus constantly has a negative impact on the quality of our products and services, which would affect our customer sentiment in a negative way.

What is most valuable?

The tool does offer a single sign-on for businesses. This means that I no longer have to remember a separate, individual password for this tool. Other tools require that, which is a big downside as I used to have to retrieve this password from my mails every time that I attempted to perform a login to the service.

With single sign-on, the system will automatically detect who I am and which organization I belong to. This speeds up the process and even a restart of the system will not require me to lose time.

What needs improvement?

There is not much to improve.

Currently, I am not able to define a different country or location, which can result in negative experiences as the tool is being recognized by websites and this can make it difficult to access them or force me to disable the program temporarily. This could also be solved, however, this issue might be related to the way in which we have set up our current implementation of this service. This does not have to be a global shortcoming when using this service.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used the solution for about two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is very stable so far. We have been connected for 36 hours without issue.
