Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Nagios Fusion version 12.8 excels in user-friendly GUI design, cost-effectiveness, and ease of deployment.""Being open source lets us customize it for our monitoring needs, saving us money.""It's very easy to manage and monitor it.""It is easier for client installation, and the configurations are doable even for a newcomer in the field."

"The bandwidth monitoring is a very attractive feature, it can tell you the bandwidth utilization while it is attempting to connect to the host for feedback.""The sensors and probes are great, nice and lightweight, they don't take up too many resources on the system. We just deploy them out and they start reporting instantly.""I found PRTG Network Monitor very useful for troubleshooting and monitoring the utilization of either the network or server.""From a network point of view, we can see the state of the network, as well as bandwidth usage and downtime.""The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is its ease of use.""There is a simplicity to setting up the extra sensors. It's really easy for us to build infrastructure and start monitoring very quickly.""The most valuable features of PRTG Network Monitor are user-friendly, and the graphical interface is good for all the network devices that are mapped in this organization. It's very easy to find reports for any devices that we are looking for.""The sensors and remote probes are phenomenal. We use them for all of our global sites. The problem with our global sites are that they are all VPNs. If the link goes down, you can't monitor other solutions, as it just goes off the grid. Having remote probes allows them to still carry on and get the information that we need when it comes back up, sending the information to us."

Cons
"In future iterations of this solution, there is a desire for more seamless integration with other monitoring software.""Nagios Fusion should include a 'remember me' option when logging in, so we don't need to enter a username and password every time.""There are some bugs, although not that many. There are some situations where the solution is not stable but the number of problems is not very high.""Adding application performance monitoring to the product alongside infrastructure monitoring would make it a more complete and useful solution."

More Nagios Fusion Cons →

"PRTG Network Monitor should improve the NetFlow dashboard, there is no flexibility, and the NetFlow is not meeting the business needs. Additionally, they are missing part of the configuration management.""The scalability of this solution could improve as well as the automated provisioning of the infrastructure.""We need something that is more predictive. We would prefer if it wasn't a solution that was corrective and instead offered predictive insights so that we can handle problems before they even occur.""It probably has this already, but if it had a mobile app that would be helpful. For example, on a day like today when I'm out, if I could just fire it up and see green, green, green, green, green or red, that would be good.""I would like a more straightforward ability to create dashboards and maps. The network maps should be a bit more flexibility in the GUI to do what we need to do.""PRTG Network Monitor can improve by adding prevention and detection features.""Users need to buy the more expensive licenses if they expect to be able to scale.""I would like to see more updates available in this solution."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
