Extensive functionality impresses despite occasional setup complexity
The functions and features of Oracle Enterprise Manager that I have found most valuable are its evolution from being problematic in 10g and 11g versions to becoming better and more stable. Now it has become a significantly improved product. We have integrated identity management, and we are using it for normal database examination, tuning, and performance. We are working with STATSPACK and similar tools that are integrated in Oracle Enterprise Manager. We are currently working with version 13.5, having upgraded from 13.4 last year. Automation is useful for improving operational efficiency, and there are many more opportunities to automate outside the databases. Not many things need to be automated inside the databases. We have jobs running, imports, exports, and similar tasks. To automate these processes, we utilize the Scheduler from Oracle, which is managed in the databases by the vendor. This is not part of our DBA functions in Oracle Enterprise Manager.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Apart from the fact that we are assured high availability and disaster recovery, we use this product for different purposes as well."
"I think it is the best, most robust and flexible product available."
"It's used in our new architecture, for production, HA/DR and it works with different data groups."
"It allowed us to have a stable, low maintenance, worry free disaster recovery solution that we can present to our management and our clients."
"From the simplest to the most complex environments, and with millions of transactions, MIMIX can adapt to any environment."
"For data replication purposes, we would migrate users from the live box to the backup machine in a matter of minutes, which was much quicker for the end user and required no restore from tapes."
"By implementing remote journals, we have put the load on the target system as opposed to the source."
"You can sleep without fear every night if MIMIX takes care of your data replication."
"If you run Oracle Products from Oracle OVM, Oracle Database, Web Logic, etc. Oracle Enterprise Manager is by far the best way to provide a single console and monitoring and alerting solution."
"OEM 12 C has simplified management of our Enterprise Systems and has eliminated unnecessary and legacy tools."
"I think the look and feel and the accessibility to the databases, the scale of environment support."
"Oracle Enterprise Manager has eased the responsibilities among our DBAs."
"It is a must if you have more than a couple of databases to monitor and manage, it can also do a lot of other stuff and monitor various types of targets."
"The most valuable is when a client calls us to tell us the performance is really bad, I can quickly go on to OEM and see which SQL is causing the problem."
"It provides a graphical interface and easy management."
"The Lifecycle Management Pack for Enterprise Manager has allowed the organization to have an almost real-time view of security and compliance across every single database within the estate."

Cons

"Replication errors need to be resolved."
"Could make it easier to fix object errors."
"OS version compatibility needs work."
"Replication of the IBM i spooled files and files on the IFS system (Windows-like environment). About 1/2 the time, we have to nudge the system a bit to get the file(s) over."
"The MQSeries replication part doesn't work smoothly, sometimes requiring more manual activity to ensure synch between live and backup."
"The monitoring part of MIMIX - VSP (Vision Solutions Portal) needs some improvements."
"Monitoring tools can be improved but are very useful already."
"The solution could use better dashboards for new users. They can look complicated until you get used to using the solution."
"I would like to see more functionality/information in Standard Edition Oracle for the same performance analysis."
"With regards to masking still, some options could be added like running in simulation mode, creation of audit file option, file summary, file after masking."
"Every release, they seem to move the navigation and you have to retrain your entire DBA staff."
"In my experience, the monitoring could be improved."
"The areas where Oracle Enterprise Manager could improve include the dashboarding, which could be made more intuitive, and the drill-down reporting, which can and should be enhanced."
"They should improve the hover text context. This would provide assistance whenever a task is attempted by a DBA."
"The solution's agents work with Java, and the Java code sometimes consumes a lot of memory on the CPU."
"I would say mostly backup and recovery, through the Enterprise Manager. Or any corruptions, to be able to fix them through Enterprise Manager."
