Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

Restoration and infrastructure are extremely reliable
We are currently using Tivoli to backup 15 terabytes within our Oracle Database using a RMAN backup script. The RMAN's utility and restoration has been perfect, we have yet to experience any issues. It's very reliable The restoration and infrastructure are extremely reliable. We would like to…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"In terms of Spectrum Protect, it runs very well; we have run it in certain clients for the best part of 10 years, and it runs very well for us."
"This product is very versatile."
"It has increased our security, scalability, and high availability."
"It is pretty scalable. It will scale to anything."
"I know Networker, Avamar, BackupExec but I like mostly TSM."
"The feature we have found most valuable is when you want to integrate it with a Tape Library and then do the DRM life cycle. That is when it works the best."
"Scalability, it lets your company grow without losing confidence."
"The fact that we can take the backup straight onto tape is the most valuable feature."
"The restoration and infrastructure is extremely reliable."
"Even though a lot of other people like Veeam, Tivoli's restoration and infrastructure are unbeatable, making them the only ones that we rely on despite other feasible options."

Cons

"I would not recommend Spectrum Protect at this point."
"I am not really impressed with the Level 1 support, but once I get past that and go to Level 2, then we will usually get some type of resolution."
"I would love to see something which allows us to do an auto restart of backup jobs."
"The product should improve its GUI. It should also support Windows clustering."
"It needs some software upgrades to fix some of its current bugs."
"Its management part can be better and simplified. It is kind of a beast as compared to Commvault or Veeam, but they are more user-friendly."
"It's adequate for my core banking, however, I am looking for another solution for all systems. It is not compatible with other operating systems like Windows or Linux, and lacks a consolidated dashboard from Browser Spectrum."
"The installation process could be simplified."
"We would like to have the opportunity to omit data from being backed up. For example, we have three virtual machines, each with three disks. When running the backup, it will automatically take each disk rather than allowing us to select what data we want backed."
"We rarely need to reach out to customer service; however, when we do, they have not been able to help us resolve a single call."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Some of the new advanced features are definitely more into cost savings, e.g., dedupe compression, so doing more with less."
"It is very scalable, but the downside is that it costs money."
"Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
"There may be an advantage to going with IBM in terms of pricing. They have a pay-as-you-grow policy, so there is no need to take one license for the entire datacenter. You can start with small licenses and then grow, and pay, as you use more."
"The pricing of the solution is high in comparison to other products on the market. For example, IBM and Symantec have less costly options."
"We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
"At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
"IBM Spectrum Protect has a fixed price and includes no additional costs."
"It's expensive, but it's worth for it due to the volume of critical information within our database. We are currently paying about $22,000 per year."
