Has provided straightforward backup and rapid deployment for diverse environments
There is reporting in IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, but I'm not very familiar with this area. I always concentrated on getting the customer to do the backup, restore, and related tasks, but there is reporting. IBM has made a decision to withdraw the product and replace it with IBM Data Protect. The correct direction is Data Protect, which includes ransomware detection. With IBM Data Protect, you can add more servers for backup. It's scalable, which is a key feature over Storage Protect and Storage Protect Plus, even more capable than Veritas, because Veritas has an option to make different media servers. You can scale the backup process regardless of the load of the customer. This speeds up the backup and restore process for a complete data center, which cannot be done with any other product. I rate IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 9 out of 10.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Some of the features we find very valuable and use a lot, are retention sets."
"The initial setup of IBM Protect Plus is simple and not complex."
"Using this tool, we can easily backup and restore or recover the data for PCs and mobiles in case of system crashes."
"The solution integrates well with other tools."
"The solution is scalable and can be fitted for any customer."
"Reliability, recovery features, and stability are valuable to me."
"The most valuable feature of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is the deduplication functionality. The clients moved to this solution originally because of this feature."
"We used to use the solution with tapes a few years ago. We've switched to discs, and it has gotten much faster."
"Many of my clients have been able to remove tape drives from remote sites."
"Reading the manual and following instructions will result in a working version."
"The best thing I find with Data Protector as opposed to other products was the inter-compatibility with all different OSs; it's very OS agnostic and just seems to work, and the GUI interface is very intuitive and very easy to use."
"Data Protector allows us to improve our SLA in successful backups and the reporting tools integrated with our management console make possible 99% backup success in our clients."
"This solution is awesome; it is leaps ahead of Backup Exec, leaps ahead."
"We bought it when it was a very simple product with a clear license structure, and it just did what we needed it to do."
"If you have a complex environment, if you have different OS's - Linux, Unix, Windows - if you have backup to disk, Data Protector is a very good choice to cover the whole environment."
"From a data protection standpoint, HPE Data Protector reduced our and our customer’s recovery time, and it also gave them an advantage in the industry in that they are able fall back quicker."

Cons

"I cannot determine what benefit IBM Spectrum Protect Plus brings to the organization because we deployed this solution with one customer, and that customer changed the product after one or two years because the product is not stable and it changes with every version."
"The user experience is very bad and the interface needs to be improved."
"I would like to see continuous data protection (CDP). If there is machine failure, you don't have to go to the backup copy that you took 12 hours ago. You can actually go back to the backup copy made half an hour ago. That is, it would be good to have certain-point-in-time recovery."
"The backup support for IBM Power Virtualization needs to be added."
"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus could be made more lightweight and user-friendly in terms of GUI features to make it closer to a perfect score."
"It requires much more automation features."
"I would like more integration with security. We need to show the value of the product in regards to handling security."
"You end up needing to do a lot of troubleshooting to get things to work effectively."
"Faster VEAgent Restores"
"For me, the main weakness of Data Protector now is the Granular Recovery integrations, as they just don’t work as smoothly as they could."
"We have become frequent customers of the Data Protector technical support team because Data Protector does fairly regularly break."
"The Micro Focus Data Protector support is not as good as Veeam Backup & Replication's support."
"The downside of the flexibility on offer is if you over-configure it, it may fail to function as some configurations may not match."
"OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."
"Better documentation on how to backup the device itself through a flash drive or CD."
"Be ready for an exercise in frustration, but once all the problems are resolved, then you’re OK."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the price of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus a one on a scale of one to ten, where one is extremely expensive, and ten is very cheap."
"The initial cost of the product is perpetual but the support fees are billed annually."
"Depends on the licensing options that you choose."
"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is a little expensive."
"There is an annual license required to use IBM Spectrum Protect Plus. The cost of the license could improve, it is expensive."
"We have a perpetual license for the tool since it is deployed on-premise."
"Unlike some other solutions, such as Veritas NetBackup where you have to pay for different licenses to use different features, there is a single license that allows you to use all of the features."
"The price is lower than that of some competing products."
"Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
"The pricing is neither too expensive nor very cheap."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
"In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
