Complex deployment has limited adoption but has provided structured backup management
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is very simple to deploy for us, but for more clients or competitors, the solution is hard to deploy and to integrate. For our team, deployment of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus may take a couple of days and longer if you have a complex customer solution. The deployment itself is not very lengthy, but the integration in production is more complicated. I assess the efficiency of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus's Advanced Snapshot Technology as not good because they change a lot of things. During multiple versions, we have experienced many changes in the product, and from the customer's view, it is not a good product because with each evolution, we encounter problems. We do not sell this product or advise this product. For SLA management features with IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, I utilize file level. SLA management is a good solution and a good idea, but the product does not work well, and customers do not adopt this product. I cannot assess the integration capability of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus using RESTful API. I cannot determine what benefit IBM Spectrum Protect Plus brings to the organization because we deployed this solution with one customer, and that customer changed the product after one or two years because the product is not stable and it changes with every version. The customer wanted to move away from this solution. The price of the product is good, but the solution does not adapt to the market. The market in France does not adopt IBM Spectrum Protect Plus.

"The solution integrates well with other tools."
"The biggest benefit of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is that it's an agentless backup product which is very easy to configure and use."
"A full-featured data protection solution that is reliable and stable."
"Pricing is good; it is reasonable and more reasonable than any other vendors."
"If you want to have a strong backup for recovery and restore, you need this solution."
"This solution is very stable and has good support available online."
"The solution's stability is high because it is derived from Spectrum Protect."
"The best and biggest improvement for us is that we can rely on the backups it provides."
"It is a very good application that does the job and provides everything any basic backup application should do."
"We are able to slowly, but surely, consolidate all the backup infrastructure requirements with one product."
"Data Protector was cheaper and would do what we needed to do."
"In one of the projects involving a database and UCMDB integration, we needed to manage a large database. We used the scheduling feature in Data Protector to automate backups."
"Our complete Data Centre HP Data Protector deployment was AU$46,000."
"The most valuable feature is the capability to back up our SQL server."
"Data Protector works in conjunction with a Catalyst-based deduplication feature and HPE StoreOnce appliances to provide us with the tools to build reliable DR solutions for backups through Catalyst stores replication using ARS between the sites."

Cons

"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus could improve security."
"There could be better integration with Spectrum Protect and Spectrum Protect Plus, it should be one solution."
"I would like more integration with security. We need to show the value of the product in regards to handling security. For example, how it handles current malware or viruses. IBM should be more proactive in this direction."
"We have to do a tech refresh, during the migration process and it doesn't allow a straightforward pathway."
"In the future, I would like to see support for global deduplication."
"The only thing that I would like to see improved is the actual schedule that you get on the policies."
"There's significant room for improvement. They are not yet where I want them to be."
"The replication feature is not available."
"When it comes to hardware support, HPE will help you in a minimal amount time. When in comes to software problems, you do not know when they will close your issues."
"I would like to see a better user interface in the next release."
"The license structure for advanced features, such as backing up to disk or compression, can make the license pretty costly."
"I don't like this solution so much because it's very technical and compared to Commvault and Veeam, it's not so user-friendly. The interface needs improvement."
"There are lots of bugs around; inability to downgrade version, issues with version upgrades, etc."
"Support is poor, I would rate it a two out of five."
"We didn't know exactly where this solution would go a few years ago. It was in a storage department and then later in a software department."
"In general, you can say that Micro Focus Data Protector is behind in capabilities when compared with other backup solutions, such as Commvault, Symantec, NetBackup, but it is very strong for certain use cases such as array integration. We are using it in production even now. There should be some kind of cloud integration and archiving solutions. I think this is the area they need to focus on."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Depends on the licensing options that you choose."
"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is a little expensive."
"I rate the price of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus a one on a scale of one to ten, where one is extremely expensive, and ten is very cheap."
"The licensing model of Spectrum Protect Plus is more efficient and cheaper compared to the original."
"The initial cost of the product is perpetual but the support fees are billed annually."
"In addition to the standard licensing fees, we paid for implementation and training."
"We have a perpetual license for the tool since it is deployed on-premise."
"Clients prefer to buy a perpetual license, but the majority opt for a yearly subscription."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"The pricing is neither too expensive nor very cheap."
