Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

Though a highly stable tool, it needs to be made easier to use and configure
Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a five out of ten. OpenText Data Protector is complex to configure correctly, but the areas concerning the data and compression are good. Once you get the product to work, it works, but it's much too complex to configure and troubleshoot, as it takes a lot of time and energy, making it not so efficient. Once the tool is configured in your environment, it provides good backup and compression features. In my company, we use OpenText Data Protector as a backup for our servers, and we have a team of 20 people to take care of the data backup using the tool. My company doesn't use OpenText Data Protector as a backup for our client's computers. In my company, we have scheduled the process related to backup, which makes the tool run daily around 30 to 40 times.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Excellent compression and deduplication with off-site WAN backup included."
"Ability to restore to any host."
"The product has many valuable features for handling backup needs, including replication, live migration, and incremental disaster recovery."
"This solution is stable."
"Hornetsecurity Altaro VM Backup's most valuable features include its user-friendly interface and the ability to perform data compression updates, which enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness."
"Reverse Delta is Altaro proprietary backup deduplication technology. With Reverse Delta, the latest version of a file is always made available in its entirety, not as a delta file."
"The intuitive interface allows you to set up and perform backups and restores easily."
"The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency."
"This solution is quite stable because we have only three users."
"The command-line interface is user-friendly and well documented in the reference guide."
"The tool's most valuable aspect is its ease of management. It was not complex. In terms of features, I can mention a couple of things. For example, if you need to restore a VM, you can do it with multiple streams in OpenText Data Protector, which is an advantage over Commvault, from what I've noticed, having worked with multiple tools. Another thing is the Oracle backups; configuring Oracle backups is much easier in OpenText Data Protector."
"Ability to automatically detect and secure new data sources without requiring manual configuration intervention."
"It's user-friendly and not overly complicated to configure."
"The installation was simple and provided an easy way to install even on Unix servers. It has excellent features like deduplication."
"The feature that was most valuable was that we could restore one mailbox and we could do different backups for different databases."
"I like that it supports HPE UNIX servers since many backup solutions do not - this is the main reason why we chose this solution."

Cons

"If you look into the performance of a virtual machine and you look to the performance of the physical machine, the correlation between these is totally unclear."
"The scalability of the solution is limited."
"Basically, how it works is that you have a single local drive, and then you have a cloud backup. It'd be nice if you could rotate the single local backup drive. As of now, you can't."
"Replication is not fast, the GUI could be more user-friendly, and technical support is lacking in Iran."
"The solution needs multi-platform support as it is currently only available for VMware and Hyper-V. It also lacks support for physical servers and workstations."
"It would be nice to see a feature that backs up the host so that, in case of a server failure, an entire server could be restored all at once."
"Stability."
"The application could include a feature to install a set size of data, such as the ability to store a single application with all its registry information for easy transfer."
"The challenge is that we can't restore a single file from the VM in the data process when we do VM backups. But with Commvault, you can restore a single file even if you have a VM snapshot package. That's one drawback of this tool. When we do VM backups, it should help us browse the VMs to restore a single file instead of doing the complete VM restore."
"The technical support is poor and should be improved."
"Faster VEAgent Restores"
"The interface has been the same for many years and needs to be updated"
"I do not think that this solution is relevant in the current IT market. They have not upgraded their features and functionalities which makes it difficult for them to remain competitive."
"The online backups of Office 365 have room for improvement. This is now available for the Exchange Online part of Office 365, but we're still waiting for SharePoint Online, Teams, etc. We know that it's coming, but it takes time."
"VMware backup integration and cloud recovery is lacking."
"It can occasionally be inaccurate in its backup/recovery time estimates."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a free version for Hosts with 2 VMs."
"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"The price is great for the utility you get and the licensing has never caused any issues with my company."
"The pricing is okay,"
"By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"The pricing is neither too expensive nor very cheap."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
