A stable solution with an intuitive interface and quick customer service
I have been working with Fortinet FortiGate, WatchGuard, Sophos, and SonicWall. I'm not as comfortable with SonicWall because of their UI and limitations. I prefer Fortinet above all other options. When it comes to configuration, I am confident in my ability to handle various tasks, including creating policies such as firewall rules, web policies, and application policies. Additionally, I can configure VPNs and implement load balancing, among other tasks. Overall, I feel much more comfortable working with Fortinet. Fortinet has made significant improvements by integrating AI with firewalls for threat analysis and prevention. In the past 2-3 years, they have launched FortiSASE and SIEM, and they also provide SOC services. Both Palo Alto and Fortinet FortiGate are excellent. While Fortinet FortiGate comes at higher prices, the functionality and support justify the cost. They promptly resolve firmware issues and inform all support providers about configuration changes.

Controls and limits data transfers to enhance security but network traffic visibility needs improvement
DeviceLock has been problematic and not very effective for us so far, maybe due to configuration issues. It was already in place when I joined and wasn't performing well. We need more control over data, which DeviceLock hasn't provided yet. I remember they moved to Acronis from another company. There were features related to network traffic visibility, which could improve the DLP significantly. Other solutions already offer this kind of network visibility for data loss prevention. They are limited compared to before. Some features were removed from the current version. Policy management with DeviceLock was not very user-friendly. The IT team had to access two servers to make changes. The way the platform and solution are presented requires time to understand and get familiar with.

Efficient bandwidth management and secure network access with a strong firewall
The primary use case of the Firebox mainly revolves around bandwidth management, unnecessary web blocking, application control, and protection against brute force attacks. It is also implemented for load balancing, SD-WAN, and branch-to-branch connectivity from one location to another. We also use…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Initial setup is straightforward. There weren't too many issues with setting it up. It takes one hour or so."
"The system is very easy to scale."
"This product is definitely scalable."
"The reporting you receive out of this appliance is excellent. You will not need an external management system."
"The biggest lesson would be that Fortinet FortiGate provides a high level of security at a good total cost of ownership."
"The inspection and web security features are most valuable."
"The integration with Active Directory is one of the good features. Most of the customers are now looking for the Single Sign-on feature. So, being able to integrate Active Directory with the firewall is useful. It is also easy."
"The use of Fortinet FortiGate in an infrastructure saves time, reduces costs, improves the security of users and resources, and prevents data leakage."
"The most useful feature is the control and limiting of users sending documentation. It works with classification. When you classify your data, DeviceLock identifies it and, depending on your policy, can notify you where the data is going and who's using it."
"We have witnessed an ROI as it has helped with security measures."
"I have found the DNS Watch feature for intrusion and prevention response and APT Locker most valuable to me."
"One of my favorite features is the Geolocation service, where you can actually block specific activity or IP addresses registered to certain countries. For example, I don't want any web traffic from Russia or North Korea. I may even lock down certain policies down to 'I only want U.S. IP addresses.' I find that very useful."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is traffic management."
"The most important feature of this solution is the SLAs."
"The set up was quite straightforward and we handled it in-house. It took a few hours to deploy the product."
"It also provides us with layered security. It has onboard virus scanning features that allow it to scan before something gets to the host. It will also stop a person from going to a site that is known to be bad."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is its ease of use."

Cons

"Fortinet FortiGate could be improved in terms of user friendliness at the policy level and assigning URL based and keyword based features."
"Fortinet FortiGate has started implementing AI, however, it hasn't reached full maturity."
"The pricing could be a bit better, especially when you consider how they have the most basic offering priced."
"The configuration part was challenging, especially converting configurations from another OEM to FortiGate."
"For Fortinet FortiGate, their code development would definitely be something they need to improve on to reduce vulnerabilities that need to be patched."
"The command line is complicated, and the interface could be better."
"Monitoring and reporting could be better."
"In the next release, maybe the documentation on how to use this solution could be improved."
"Policy management with DeviceLock was not very user-friendly."
"The solution's pricing could be improved."
"When working with WatchGuard, specifically in configuring Panda Security on the portal for the first time, it was challenging for me."
"There were a little bit of problems with the tool's updates, making it an area where improvements are needed."
"There is a problem with the RAM - it's eating up resources. The RAM utilization sometimes reaches up to 80% - 95%, and what we do is just restart the firewall."
"Cloud-based central administration of all devices from one point would be nice"
"There could also be better reporting. For example, there should be more out-of-the-box management reports."
"The next release should have better software and configuration systems that can also be used on Linux."
"It's sometimes not easy to understand and can require specialist assistance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its licenses cost the same for different subscription plans."
"Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
"Each feature costs money, so it is important to study your needs."
"By default, they give SD-WAN along with the firewall. They don't have separate licensing for the SD-WAN functionality. However, they have security licenses that are sold separately on a subscription basis. Customers can consume these security features to protect their users from internet traffic."
"Compared to other firewall products, it's a little cheaper in terms of pricing."
"It has a competitive price."
"For the price, I'd rate it a ten because it's very cost-effective."
"They need to be competitive with other solutions."
Information not available
"The solution is not expensive and customers pay for a yearly license."
"I would rate the pricing at seven out of ten. As for the licensing costs, we typically have yearly licenses for our clients, but there are no additional costs beyond the standard licensing fees."
"Its cost is okay. It is not too expensive, not too low. I would rate it a nine out of ten in terms of pricing."
"The price is comparable."
"The pricing is competitive."
"We don't have any other costs other than the licensing stuff."
"I usually tell people that it's really affordable as well, particularly compared to Cisco."
"There is a license required to use the solution and we pay annually. The price could be reduced because it is a bit expensive."
