Supports flexible hosting needs through seamless upgradability and strong monitoring capabilities
The most valuable features of Dell PowerEdge R-Series for me are the feature richness and the upgradability. I really love the way that it is so dynamically applicable for every situation, and they manage to have an all-in-one solution for every single situation. Dell PowerEdge has supported the growth and operational success of my company through its great compute power and price-to-performance ratio. Every time Dell is at the top of its game for us, and there is just no other brand for us that is able to reach that kind of price-to-performance ratio. Dell PowerEdge R-Series has features that specifically cater to the needs of my small company, such as iDRAC. The iDRAC system is a complete feature set for managing servers and hardware technically and monitoring-wise. It really fits in our system and our ecosystem, and monitoring-wise, it is excellent. They have all these sensors available via different protocols and end points, which I love, and the ability to manage and control everything via the iDRAC interface is just a welcome bonus. In our use case, Dell PowerEdge R-Series is very flexible. It is another computer which helps a lot because of the durability over time. They keep running, making scalability for getting more of those resources in our environment so easy.

Offers comprehensive support and performance but initial deployment requires expertise
Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is a complete solution that includes built-in hypervisor management and Appliance Manager, and integrates with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It simplifies the management of virtual machines, networking, compute, and storage, allowing me to create multiple virtual machines easily without logging into the storage system. It offers free licensing of Oracle Linux and Solaris, and provides high-performance capabilities through extreme performance storage options. Additionally, the product ensures comprehensive customer support.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It helps in growing our needs in the organization by doing what it is supposed to be doing and it also helps in scaling."
"The reliability combined with management is what we like. The price is good too."
"Dell's customer support is very good, especially since we have premium support for next-day hardware service."
"The active directory and file server are valuable features."
"We use remote access a lot. They are fairly simple to use."
"The features of Dell PowerEdge R-Series that I appreciate the most are the central management and the surrounding software as they're integrated and easy to use."
"Dell PowerEdge R-Series supports the growth and operational success of my company in an amazing way, as we had several meetings with Dell representatives who came to our office, understood our forecast, and helped us build infrastructure that would support our goal."
"I rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers as a nine out of ten overall."
"The most valuable features include distinct storage within the Oracle PCA."
"It has helped us to reduce Oracle licensing costs for database and applications."
"The main advantage of the PCA is licensing, for Oracle Database."
"Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is a complete solution that includes built-in hypervisor management and Appliance Manager, and integrates with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure."
"This is really a good consolidation play, so typically customers would have 10 or 15 servers out there, probably older, and what PCA does is give them a platform for consolidation."
"Supports connection to most of network topology, such as VLAN and network segmentation."
"It's the most cost-effective solution for your mixed Oracle and non-Oracle workloads."
"You will find the high availability and License Team with Oracle very valuable."

Cons

"Power consumption is probably on everyone's top of mind regarding Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers; they use a lot of power and create a lot of heat. Also, the noise levels are pretty high, though I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done about it."
"Unfortunately, PowerEdge Rack Servers do not support NVMe storage."
"The way we can manage the environment through the solution's GUI could be improved."
"My biggest grievance is related to getting a caddy. We have decommissioned our old servers that we used for development or testing. You cannot buy hard drives for old servers from Dell. It is very annoying."
"There's really nothing special about it, and Dell doesn't make servers that are any better than anybody else's."
"While I wouldn't call it a problem, physically mounting the servers into the rails that come with the servers can be a challenge. They could be engineered to be a little bit easier to use. It's not that significant, we can manage it, but you need at least two people to do it together because they're a bit heavy."
"It would be easier if the remote connection to the server could be done through the USB port. From the server, we should be able to connect to a laptop or a management workstation through a USB port."
"We have experienced some challenges with iDRAC when upgrading firmware."
"Patching processing takes a long time. Only one compute node is patched at a time."
"I think a tighter integration with external storage, the simplicity of having, let's say for example, EMC storage or Hitachi storage connected to PCA would have been a nice little added."
"OVM Manager Interface is using HTML5. It should be reconverted to be a Java interface."
"The overall engineered system is years behind other vendors, I'm thinking of VMware, OpenStack, Azure Stack."
"For pricing, it is more expensive than the normal solution or the hyper-converged system."
"Customer Service: Since the PCA is relative new, finding experienced resources is bit hard; need a lot of improvements in terms of documentation and technical details."
"The deployment process of Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is complicated and requires significant knowledge for initial configuration."
"In comparison to competitors like VMware, there's a perceived need for Oracle to enhance OVM, making it more flexible and user-friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"When you compare public cloud solutions to PowerEdge in terms of cost, initially the cost of Dell servers or Dell technology was really high. However, right now it's on par or, maybe, even cheaper when we use Dell hardware. If we don't swap it out in three years and if we stretch it to four or five years, then we can get even more of an ROI versus cloud cost."
"Dell EMC PowerEdge Rack Servers are very expensive."
"The pricing for this solution is competitive compared to others on the market."
"The cost structure associated with Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers presents itself as a potential point of contention for budget-conscious consumers, as it could be more strategically positioned to compete within the broader marketplace."
"The pricing and licensing are fair."
"They seem to have become more expensive. I've not done a comparison with other vendors recently. If the price increases more, we would need to do a comparison next year just to make sure that we are benchmarking our server purchases correctly."
"The pricing is very competitive."
"I know the pricing for Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers went up last year, and we weren't too happy about that, but it is what it is."
"It is relatively cost-effective."
"No licenses for the shipped software or firmware."
"It is more expensive than the normal solution or the hyper-converged system."
"If you have many Oracle products, such as databases, middleware, and apps, it will help you reduce Oracle app licences and support costs."
