Enhancing data management with user-friendly features but needs better documentation
We are a customer of Collibra. Collibra Governance is applied in our data management workflows by creating all the business functions separately, maintaining the data sources of those KPIs and everything separately on those businesses Collibra Governance provides ease of use. The portal is…

Faster and more efficient than manual methods or other tools like Informatica
The main differences between Collibra Lineage and Informatica are significant, particularly for small to mid-sized organizations. First, Informatica requires a dedicated team, which incurs a huge cost, making it less suitable for smaller organizations. Second, Informatica's tools are very scattered. For instance, to create a domain, you need to use Axon, and then for lineage, you must use EDC. For profiling, Informatica Developer or Analyst is required. These different tools are not well-connected to display everything on one screen. While Informatica is trying to improve with its cloud version, not many users have adopted it yet. These are the two main areas where Informatica lags.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Collibra's lineage is a very powerful feature. We have integrated Collibra with Azure and ADLS storage and we create lineage diagrams using the two tools."
"Collibra Governance's most valuable features are data lineage and stewardships."
"Collibra Governance allows users to scan the data in the Schema and check its quality"
"The most important feature in Collibra Governance is the ability to gather data or a collection of data into one repository. If a client creates a repository at his place, then it will get updated to the cloud automatically."
"The most valuable features of Collibra are the workflows and the data lineage capabilities."
"The technical support from Collibra Governance is excellent, and I rate it as ten out of ten."
"I find the rule modification and the replication of the rules in Collibra happens very quickly."
"From the perspective of a data user, the solution has a great search capability."
"The solution allowed us to quickly and efficiently implement our data governance operating model, including accountabilities, regulatory lineage, and data dictionaries. This was much faster and more efficient than manual methods or other tools like Informatica. I prefer Collibra Lineage for its self-service capabilities."
"We find the most valuable feature of this solution to be the lineage aspect."
"The diagrams are good for data visualization."
"The solution has very good online assistance."
"The most valuable features of Collibra Lineage are the multiple options for automation. Additionally, if you have a scenario where automation does not work, you have the option to manually create the lineage. The solution does not force you to always go through an automated way where you have broken lineage and you are stuck without a lineage."
"It shows how the data was transformed on the way and how the solutions were derived. This is the essence of the tool and why it is so powerful."
"The solution makes data more discoverable and transparent."

Cons

"The platform can sometimes be unstable, particularly in terms of speed and reconnection issues."
"While connecting with the data source, it's not very easy. If there's a firewall, it is difficult to connect with the database. It's not easy when you are configuring on the database."
"The connectors are not very sophisticated. They can do, for example, Informatica and Tableau, but the connectors themselves could be improved."
"The workflows and the language they use needs to be improved."
"The solution's search functionality can be improved"
"What I use it for is fairly rudimentary, and I don't have any complaints about it. I haven't tried to stretch the boundaries at all, but it would be nice if there were capabilities built within the system to somehow help enforce the quality and consistency across related elements that are built in the catalog. It could have intelligent capabilities built in to help maintain the quality of the data and information, such as natural language processing, machine learning, and so on."
"The domain-based approach could be more helpful for aspects such as customer 360 and product 360."
"The technical support could be better."
"Collibra doesn't provide support for integration for SAP Info Steward directly with Collibra."
"Before you can use this solution, you have to make a lot of changes to how you measure your information in your organization, the data governance and policies, and the organizational structures that use them. Many companies believe that if they purchase the licenses for the tool that they have done the job, but this is far from the case with this tool."
"It would be better if features like the privacy module and AI-based Collibra DQ were included in one package instead of being separate and requiring additional costs. Currently, the basic package covers lineage and documentation, but the extra modules come at an extra cost."
"We would like this solution to be able to connect directly to the databases, so we can pull directly from Databank without manual intervention."
"The product must be cheaper."
"The workflow documentation must be improved."
"Collibra Lineage could improve connectively. If they can offer more out-of-the-box connectors, which come as in a package compared to you having to go and buy a lot in the marketplace for certain specific connectors."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I think it is on a yearly basis, but I'm not involved with the pricing session, so I have no idea. There are several licenses for different models. You get one license per product, but a lot of features are controlled separately through different licenses. So, as and when you want to use a feature, you have to procure the license for that feature."
"Collibra Governance is an expensive solution."
"Many of our customers I spoke to felt that the solution is a bit highly-priced."
"Generally, it is a rather expensive solution compared to some other tools in the market, but I found it to be fair-priced for its capabilities."
"The solution's pricing is moderate and not very expensive."
"Collibra Governance is expensive - I would rate its pricing as one out of five."
"Collibra provides you with a license based on the subscription model that you purchase."
"The product's pricing is high, which its comprehensive features and capabilities may justify."
"It's expensive, especially for small companies."
"There are different licenses available for Collibra Lineage based on what kind of access you want. If you want, for example, a read-only license they have different ones to pick from."

Hi,There is not a default answer. It depends on your focus and your data source. If you are looking a data governance tool for Microsoft 365 or for Azure, Microsoft Purview should be the best because of the native integration.

These two are suites of 'tools' for metadata management. I would ask first that you list 'what' you are wanting to achieve with such tools.  Data Catalog?  Data Lineage?  Table level or Column level lineage? Data Quality detection, etc, etc. Your answers will be critical as you engage various vendors as each may say they do 'it all', but the reality is something less. Also, do you need to manage metadata across heterogeneous systems, just Azure, or others, because some tools are great if used on their 'native' platform, but not so great integrating with other platforms. You may also want to consider Quest/erwin Data Intelligence Suite. I have implemented this solution and it is one of the best. I would add that some tools tend to 'overwhelm' your users with all they can do. So be careful that whatever you bring in will not become 'shelf-ware'.
