Consolidating user access boosts productivity by simplifying navigation
The most helpful features of Citrix XenServer are that you can consolidate everything onto one web page. For our use case, this is probably the easiest solution because there are many different software applications running in our environment. The benefits from using Citrix include increased productivity, as users don't have to search for what they need to open. They can see everything in one place instead of having numerous links in Chrome or on their home page. They simply go to our Citrix page and see everything they need. We can also specify access permissions per user, so they only get the software they require. If users have lists or reports they need to create, we can add the icons on Citrix, and they can open them directly. Everything is in the same place, so they don't have to search for anything anymore. This is the biggest productivity increase.

Initial setup was relatively straightforward for a clustering solution.
SQL patching High availability We were looking for a better-than-Microsoft-SQL clustering solution. The interface can seem a little old school at times. By Old School, I simply mean from a graphics perspective it looks like word 97, not word 2013. I have used it for three years. The team from…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Ability to move your virtual machines from one host to another."
"I've found the following features to be the most valuable: user personalization layer, app layering, provisioning, and notification services for integration between different domains."
"Citrix XenServer is suitable when working with VDI solutions. It provides essential capabilities and stability, which are crucial."
"I really like this solution, but it is not widely known."
"I find Citrix XenServer valuable for small to medium-sized businesses as it is user-friendly and easy to deploy, and when included with Citrix virtualization solutions, it provides a comprehensive package with existing licenses."
"We find there are good central maintenance and central management panels."
"I find Citrix XenServer valuable for small to medium-sized businesses."
"Citrix Hypervisor integrates easily and I can manage the infrastructure better. If I need to take a machine down to expand the hard drive, I do not have to physically be here. I do not need to order new equipment or new hard drives. I can shut it down, increase the drive space and bring it back up."
"Customer service is excellent and technical support is excellent."
"Customer service has been excellent so far and technical support has been very helpful, quickly resolving any issues we encountered."

Cons

"Hard to maintain system because Xen's management tool (XenCenter) isn't very useful."
"Citrix could provide more tools to help the client manage the solution because we need to build our own tools in some cases. Everything is available through PowerShell, but then you need to build your own scripts to do the more advanced work."
"The performance, storage capabilities and network are all aspects of the solution that needs improvement."
"You need a licensed account to look up technical support."
"The product could be faster and licensing options could be improved."
"The solution is too expensive and people are kind of moving away from Citrix. It's starting to become a problem. It is a primary reason that while we are rebuilding we're going to seek out open-source solutions."
"There's a learning curve, especially for those coming from a Microsoft background. Setting it up and managing it can introduce some complexity."
"Network management needs improvement because it is not very stable."
"The interface can seem a little old school at times."
"Upgrading from DxDev to DxEnterprise was a bit more bumpy, but even that was pretty easy to do."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"While it is free for small networks, the pricing is high if your network grows past a certain size."
"We migrated from VMware to XenCenter to cut costs."
"Citrix Hypervisor is a licensed product, and customers who buy the Citrix XenDesktop get Citrix Hypervisor for free. If they don't buy the license for Citrix XenDesktop, they'll need to pay for Citrix Hypervisor and its price is high. Pricing is even higher than VMware. The licensing policy for Citrix Hypervisor is good. It's straightforward. The only issue is the price because it's an expensive product."
"There are free and paid versions. The free version is limited in features but not by time limit. The paid version has more features."
"There are three editions available and I believe they are perpetual licenses."
"The most valuable feature is the cost; it is a free product."
"The pricing and licensing is so important. Customers do consider the price seriously."
"To subscribe to the paid version with support, it is approximately $6,000 per year."
