Highly scalable and reliable SAN with fiber channel connectivity but bulky in size and consumes a lot of power
Hot spare disk system to take over the full workload in the event of a failure, at the same performance and service levels. The data is clustered over multiple disks so data read/write access time is very low. Fiber channel connectivity option for high speed data transfer. Single point of management/control. Customized version of Linux OS hence much higher security.

Unified storage has protected critical data and supports smooth admin work for diverse workloads
In my experience with NetApp FAS Series, I found the CLI commands to be very valuable and easy to understand, unlike other storage products. I can use just the show command to see something, and it helps me narrow down issues quickly, which makes CLI easy for me. I use snapshot technology in NetApp FAS Series. The snapshot technology has helped me in data protection. For example, during an upgrade of our ONTAP version at my workplace, it did not reflect properly despite the upgrade being completed. I had a VMware snapshot from another team, and that was helpful for me to retrieve the data right after the failed upgrade. I use snapshots frequently, maintaining a snapshot policy of 28 days which allows me to help users retrieve files they are unable to access. In maintaining data integrity in my operations with RAID DP, I see that it helps me significantly. If two or more disks fail, it gives me time to work on replacements. If only one disk fails without RAID DP, I would lose data and connection, but with RAID DP, I have that time to act without losing or making data unavailable to users. The data management features of Data ONTAP are highly valuable for my organization in terms of data security and compliance. I have not experienced data loss or unavailability as I have SnapMirror, Snapshot, and SnapVault in place. This helped prevent escalations. While I faced some access issues or slowness, severe data loss has not been an issue, and I resolve issues within one to two hours with the data integrity these tools provide.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"At last we bought this Celerra NS 40, with 17 TB of space which is giving superb performance."
"The most important features are SnapVault, Snapshots, and SnapMirror."
"It helps us meet all customer requirements. Customers have been using NetApp for many years. They are very satisfied with NetApp and continue to use NetApp and upgrade to new solutions."
"I love those innovative healthcare data solutions that let me securely manage vast amounts of patient data (32.9 PB), use and share it enterprise-wide, and gain efficiency of scale through cloud solutions and virtualization."
"We have used some solutions like Hitachi, Dell, and EMC, but NetApp has more flexibility and we decided to stay with NetApp."
"The input and output per second performance are satisfactory."
"I have found NetApp FAS Series to be stable."
"It gives us the performance we need and the reliability we need to make sure that our systems have the uptime that our internal customers demand."
"My advice for anyone who is considering NetApp FAS is that it is a good product and our only real complaint is the lack of technical support."

Cons

"Very bulky and heavy in weight."
"There should be a separate admin web management for each SVM. We are currently managing all SVMs from a single admin interface, it is a problem."
"The product must support more drives."
"Replication should ideally be part of the ONTAP base bundle."
"NetApp FAS Series could improve by being more secure."
"I think this kind of infrastructure is mostly obsolete."
"I think this kind of infrastructure is mostly obsolete. To keep up with developments in this space, you need to move all these features to an All-Flash solution."
"The only downside is in ease in management; it is not easy to use."
"Migration from 7-Mode to Clustered Data ONTAP need improvement. It seems NetApp didn't know how to solve the main problem of migrating data from an old OS (7-Mode ) to Clustered."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten, with ten being expensive. We pay a one-time purchase price."
"It’s difficult for us to get money, so make sure you get everything in order, because there’s no going back and saying “oh, I missed this or that”, so make sure you plan well and well in advance."
"I don't recall the price, but in general, pricing can always be better."
"It's not cheap, but at the same time, it's also inexpensive. It's somewhere in between."
"We have considered upgrading to an All-Flash solution but when we evaluated the cost-benefit we discovered that we don't have enough money to invest in it. To maintain the same technology with All-Flash would be too expensive for us."
"The product's pricing is reasonable."
"it’s not an inexpensive solution and it may not be for the cost-sensitive customer."
"The solution is more expensive than other vendors."
