Delivers robust accuracy for identifying and mitigating risks but setup and security can improve
My deployment of Black Duck will take a few hours minimum. In the earlier on-premise scenario, which I've seen in other organizations, it takes a few days because you have to get the server installed, then actually keep installing various patch upgrades as it happens. The cloud version is a lot faster, probably taking only a few hours to complete. Regarding Black Duck leveraging AI to enhance security scanning of open-source components, I would not be able to address that because I have not yet explored that area significantly. Based on my experience, I would recommend Black Duck to other people if they can digest the higher cost. It helps in many aspects. I would rate this solution overall at 7 to 8. Disclaimer: The review is provided in personal capacity as an individual and not the opinion of the organization or corporate to which I belong to.

Allows for organizations and projects to manage open source vulnerabilities in an efficient, smooth and secure way
Debricked Security has already implemented several improvements, which are great. One area that could be improved is simplifying the process of converting other SBOM data formats into files that Debricked can understand. While the conversion isn't difficult, it is pretty technical and could be challenging for non-technical users. Apart from that, all software features work seamlessly. The integration with endpoints took less than fifteen minutes, and everything from security conventions to automation rules works perfectly. As for AI, Debricked Security uses it effectively, reducing manual work and unnecessary analysis. It enhances data analysis, making it much easier for customers, which I appreciate about the tool.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is able to drill down to the source level."
"The technical support has been fine, they help us a lot and we actually find them to be quite helpful."
"The most valuable feature is the vulnerability scanning, and that it's easy to use."
"The most valuable feature of Black Duck is the seamless integration to scan our Docker binary files, it provides us all open vulnerabilities, and it ensures a reference point from where it finds the vulnerability is up to date. For example, if there is any new vulnerability found, they are immediately available in the Black Duck. There is no delay in finding the vulnerabilities, they are called out in our code immediately."
"The solution is very good at scanning and evaluating open source software."
"Black Duck has been the key player in the market for many years."
"Black Duck is pretty extensive in terms of the scan reserves and the vulnerability exposures. From that perspective, I'm happy with it."
"This solution helps our customers to understand what really lies in their application."
"One of the most valuable features of Debricked Security is its ability to integrate with other tools like the Software Security Center and Fortify on Demand. This integration allows users to make comparisons and generate detailed reports based on the data that Debricked Security populates or aggregates. While this feature may not be unique, it is highly effective for detecting vulnerabilities and providing comprehensive insights."

Cons

"The initial setup of Black Duck is complex. It's not very straightforward. You need a lot of support and hand-holding from the Black Duck team itself for it to be deployed successfully across the organization."
"The scanner client is limited by the size of software it can handle."
"The initial setup is complex."
"The tool's documentation and support are areas of concern where improvements are required."
"The product's pricing is higher compared to other competitor products."
"There are areas for improvement such as false positives and the scanning of containers."
"Due to the fact that, with our software developer life cycle, we don't need to scan our source code every day or every week. For that reason, we find the cost is too high. We might only actually use it five to ten times a year, which makes it expensive."
"It's still a bit inconsistent. For example, if I scan today, it might not show the same results tomorrow."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Black Duck is more suitable if you require a lot of licensing compliance. For smaller organizations, WhiteSource is better because its pricing policies are not really suitable for huge organizations."
"It is expensive."
"The price is quite high because the behavior of the software during the scan is similar to competing products."
"I rate the product's price one on a scale of one to ten, where one is a high price, and ten is a low price."
"The price charged by Black Duck is exorbitant."
"The price is low. It's not an expensive solution."
"Depending on the use case, the cost could range from $10,000 USD to $70,000 USD."
"The pricing is a little high."
"Regarding the cost, in my country, I would say it is expensive. However, I’m not directly involved in the sales process, so I don't have the exact license costs."
