Provides ransomware protection, does good reporting, and is close to perfect for our use case
The main challenge that I have had with it was no line of support, but I've anyway taken away the Linux machine that I was using. So, I don't need that anymore. I'm migrating my Exchange to the cloud. So, I probably will stop using the exchange backup side of it sometime next year, but the rest of the virtual machines that I have on-premises are very well covered by it. To be able to back up my online Exchange, I know there is a backup in the cloud, but I prefer to have something physical with something on my premises as well. It stopped doing my backups after I did the last update on it.

Centralized backup has improved data protection and simplifies secure, compliant restores
The biggest advantage of the product is that it is basically a single appliance which comes with a bundle of backup software and the appliance, as we have a single console to manage it. It also provides other features such as data encryption at rest, along with data deduplication and compression in backup which is very useful. From the centralized dashboard, we can manage the backup job and determine if the backup job is happening appropriately or not. If any backup job fails, we can find out the root cause for the failures. Because it is a hardware-based appliance, we can restore the data immediately, and it provides genuine restore capabilities. In terms of data availability compliance, we are looking for data availability and data security in terms of encryption, data deduplication and compression. It provides data availability as each appliance comes with RAID. If one or two disks fail, then our data appliance is still available for backup. It also provides encryption, so our data is also ransomware protected.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I would definitely recommend this solution to others."
"I find BackupAssist very convenient to work on and I really like its user interface."
"We can configure the notifications themselves so that the right people get the notifications. This is very helpful. It allows key stakeholders to know if backups have happened and to remind each other to check the backups if something is not right."
"We managed to have good backups which were easy to recover, and easy backup of MS Exchange and SQL databases."
"I have found that the backups are usually very successful."
"The most valuable features of BackupAssist are ease of use, configure is simple, and more importantly, ease of recovery. If you needed to do a complete system recovery or another recovery it is straightforward."
"Now that we are using the solution, we get notified online when our backups are done."
"I get my reports. It is generally very reliable. Unless there is a major change, it doesn't stop backing up. I've got my server room set up with everything connected to the same power, and I never have power issues or failures of backups because a sub-site has gone off."
"The biggest advantages of Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) that really stand out for me are that it is very easy to interact with, easy to implement, and then easy to manage."
"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) was positioned as an appliance concept for clients, providing faster go-to-market strategies by having everything pre-integrated, which gives customers advantages so that within two to three hours, I am ready to deploy my policy."
"The product is easy to troubleshoot and store data."
"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) offers a backup, recovery, and management tool that is very easy to use."
"We use it for complete backup and recovery. We have multiple clients and have created multiple large virtual capabilities and zoning backlogs."
"If someone is looking for a very tightly-coupled solution for backup storage and does not want to deal with complicated upgrade processes, and desires easy reporting and a homogeneous solution rather than heterogeneous backup solutions where backup software and storage are different, I believe Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) is one of the best options for such customers."
"The solution's most valuable features are networker and continuous data protection."
"We don't need to manage different devices."

Cons

"One issue I had with this program, was that I couldn't get it to back up my Linux virtual machines."
"Has a few problems working with snapshots time-outs and failed backups."
"Many solutions become stagnant over time. However, BackupAssist has been consistent in updates but they must continue to innovate and improve to avoid stagnation."
"In the future I would like to see more support for Linux."
"The solution needs a dashboard or some form of central control from which you can manage all backups."
"It stopped doing my backups after I did the last update on it."
"Basically, the protection solution, when it comes to BMC, is not the modern provider."
"Managing the product is a little bit complicated."
"The two-factor authentication is missing from Dell products."
"The only thing that could be improved would be the complexity of the initial setup."
"There is room for improvement in terms of network connectivity."
"The product's index master feature needs improvement."
"From an improvement perspective, I do not see many negative points for Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA). However, budget constraints can be a challenge when pitching to customers due to the prominent pricing associated with NVMe storage."
"We would like to see the pricing drop a bit."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There's a yearly licensing cost. The costs might be around $2000 USD annually."
"It's on a yearly basis, but I'm not the one who does the licensing on that. I don't have any figures, but it's on a yearly basis, and I believe it's reasonable."
"The cost of the solution is reasonable and there are add-on options that can be purchased. I have used other solutions that are a lot more expensive that are not as good. The ability to get support is very simple and very reasonable from a cost standpoint."
"The product pricing here in Zimbabwe is good, I cannot complain."
"We have a perpetual license. It is a capacity-based license."
"It is a cost-effective solution."
"I would rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) has a yearly subscription fee."
"The licensing is billed on a monthly basis. Dell is bundled so that when you order IDPA, you get everything together with the license."
