Centralized repository, offers various cataloging mechanisms for quick data retrieval but data governance capabilities could be better
There are a couple of areas for improvement with Lake Formation. One of the main challenges, especially when dealing with rich media content, like in MarTech (Marketing Technology) or ad agencies, is its versatility. Some clients feel that Lake Formation doesn’t meet their needs and they tend to prefer competitor products for those specific use cases. The second area for improvement is in data governance. Specifically, Lake Formation could enhance its capabilities in audit logs, real-time monitoring, and advanced data governance. This includes managing the entire data lineage—where the data originated, how it moves, and where it’s currently stored. The visibility of the data as it evolves is crucial, and that’s where more advanced governance capabilities would be beneficial.

Create essential reporting scripts with simplicity but has some operational challenges
We mainly create functions and scripts required for reporting The product is not complex; I do not have to create stored procedures, functions, or views. It's just simple to use. There is general room for improvement. I have been using it for five years. I have faced stability issues, mainly…

Pros

"I can easily move data from cold storage to regular storage."
"The solution is quite good at handling analytics. It's done a good job at helping us centralize them."
"There is no doubt that this place exceeded my expectations with its incredible ambiance, attentive service, and mouthwatering menu."
"The solution has many features that are applicable to events such as audits."
"It is seamlessly integrated within the AWS ecosystem, making it straightforward to manage access patterns for AWS-native services."
"We use AWS Lake Formation typically for the data warehouse."
"AWS Lake Formation works hand in hand with other products."
"AWS Lake Formation lets you see all your data and tables on one screen."
"After creating a RabbitMQ service, they provide you with a sort of web management dashboard."
"Scalable (Massive) Parallel Processing (MPP) – The ability to bring to bear large amounts of compute against large data sets with Greenplum and the EMC DCA has proven itself to be very effective."
"Scalability is simple because it's an MPP database. If you need more processing power or you need more storage, you just add a few more nodes in the cluster. It works on common commodity hardware. You can use any type of server. You don't need to have proprietary hardware. It's fairly flexible."
"RabbitMQ will help to remove a lot of the complexities and create a loosely coupled codebase."
"We have been able to set up a messaging system that facilitates data integration between the software modules that we sell."
"The solution's technical support is good."
"The product is not complex."
"The parallel load features mean that Greenplum is capable of high-volume data loading in parallel to all of the cluster segments, which is really valuable."

Cons

"For the end-users, it's not as user-friendly as it could be."
"It falls short when it comes to more granular access control, such as cell-level or row-level entitlements which is a significant drawback for organizations that require precise control over who can access specific rows of data."
"Lake Formation could enhance its capabilities in audit logs, real-time monitoring, and advanced data governance."
"AWS Lake Formation's pricing could be cheaper."
"If I could improve AWS Lake Formation, I would add more integrations with SageMaker."
"The solution could make improvements around orchestration and doing some automation stuff on AWS front automation. It would be useful if we could use automation to build images and use hardened images which are CIS compliant."
"You need to have data experience to use the product."
"In our experience what could be improved are not the support, performance or monitoring, but at a managerial level, the very expensive professional services of AWS. This could be an area of improvement for them. It's too expensive to acquire their support."
"I’d like this dashboard to use web sockets, so it would actually be in real time. It would slightly increase debugging, etc."
"The next release should include some of the flexibility and features that Kafka offers."
"One of the disadvantages, not a disadvantage with the product itself, but overall, is the expertise in the marketplace. It's not easy to find a Greenplum administrator in the market, compared to other products such as Oracle."
"VMware Tanzu Greenplum needs improvement in the memory area and improved methods for quick access to the disc. So, one of the quick goals of Greenplum must work on enhancing access to the disc by adding hints in the database."
"Scalability issues are present."
"There are some security concerns that have been raised with this product."
"We needed to configure additional plugins. While it was relatively easy to do this on-premises, it became more challenging in the cloud."
"The product is pretty hard to configure."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"AWS Lake Formation is a bit expensive."
"The price is pretty good."
"It’s an open-source solution."
"The solution's pricing is cost-effective as it does not involve significant expenses. Licensing is required only for the server, while clients do not need any licensing. Therefore, it proves to be a cost-efficient option."
"Pricing is good compared to other products. It's fine."
"Since the tool is an open-source product, there is no need to pay anything."
"This is an open source solution."
"It is an open-source product."
"The pricing for RabbitMQ is reasonable. It is worth the cost."
