Focuses on not just backup but also on providing highly granular restore capabilities, ensuring that data can be restored at a very specific level rather than restoring entire environments
The fact that AvePoint focuses on restore capabilities, not just backup is valuable. The main intention of backup is to restore data, and that's the major differential with AvePoint compared to other vendors. Many claim to do backup, but that's not the same. The crucial part is the ability to perform granular restores, having restore-level objectives (RLO) instead of restoring entire SharePoint sites when you only need a single document. AvePoint excels in providing extremely granular restore capabilities with great Recovery Time Objectives (RTO). AvePoint Cloud Backup comes with Immutable Storage and our OPEX licensing model also includes Unlimited Storage.

Leverage disaster recovery with reliable support and cost-effective future-proof features
Zerto is straightforward to implement because it only requires the installation of an agent on the VMs designated for migration. A service, typically a VM, must also be deployed at the disaster recovery location. This entire process is simple and can be completed within three days. Zerto's near-synchronous replication occurs every minute, allowing for highly granular recovery points. This means that even if interruptions or malware disruptions occur within that minute, Zerto can restore to the last known good state, effectively recovering the entire setup to the latest backup. This capability ensures high data security and minimizes potential data loss. One of the main benefits of implementing Zerto is its data compression, which significantly reduces the load on our IPsec VPN. Zerto compresses data by 80 percent before transmitting it across the VPN, minimizing the data transferred between geographically dispersed locations. This compression and subsequent decompression at the destination alleviate the strain on the VPN, preventing overload and ensuring efficient data synchronization. Zerto simplifies malware protection by integrating it into its disaster recovery and synchronization features. This comprehensive approach eliminates the need for separate antivirus setups in virtual machines and applications. It streamlines our security measures and removes the need for additional software or solutions, resulting in an excellent return on investment. Zerto's single-click recovery solution offers exceptional recovery speed. Through the user interface, a single click allows for a complete restoration from the most recent backup within two to three minutes, enabling rapid recovery and minimal downtime. Zerto's Recovery Time Objective is excellent. In the past, if a virtual machine crashed, we would recover it from a snapshot, which could take one to two hours. With Zerto, the recovery process takes only five minutes, and users are typically unaware of any disruption. This allows us to restore everything quickly and efficiently. Zerto has significantly reduced our downtime. When malware affects our data, Zerto immediately notifies us and helps us protect other applications, even those not yet implemented with Zerto. By monitoring these applications, we can quickly identify and address any potential malware spread, minimizing downtime across our systems. Zerto significantly reduces downtime and associated costs during disruptions. Our services are unified, so in the event of a disruption without Zerto, even a half-day disruption would necessitate offline procedures. This would lead to increased manpower, service delays, and substantial financial losses due to interrupted admissions and other critical processes. By unifying service processes, Zerto minimizes the impact of outages. Zerto streamlines our disaster recovery testing across multiple locations by enabling efficient failover testing without disrupting live services. Traditionally, DR testing required downtime of critical systems, but Zerto's replication and failover capabilities allow us to test in parallel with live operations. This non-disruptive approach ensures continuous service availability while validating our DR plan, even in scenarios like malware attacks, by creating a separate testing environment that mirrors the live setup. This comprehensive testing provides confidence in our ability to handle real-world incidents effectively. This saves us over 60 percent of the time. Zerto streamlines system administration tasks by automating many processes, thereby reducing the workload for multiple administrators. This allows them to focus on other university services that require attention and effectively reallocate support resources from automated tasks to those requiring more dedicated management. Zerto is used exclusively for our critical services, providing up to a 70 percent improvement in our IT resilience.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features are the email backup and the SharePoint backup."
"The backup and recovery functionalities of the product are very useful."
"The initial setup is super easy."
"It is a very good and stable solution...With AvePoint's support, our experience has been exceptional"
"I rate the overall solution a 9 out of 10."
"The product's initial setup phase was super easy."
"The SaaS feature of AvePoint Cloud Backup is very strong."
"It is the best product in the market for Office 365 backup, and our customers are satisfied with it."
"It reduced the backup recovery time of our main backup solution by several hours. It's reduced our time because before we have to build a system and restore the data, we install the application and restore the data that took us at least a good 24 hours to do that. And now it's really minutes for us to recover our backup solution."
"For us, the most valuable features are the quick upload time and how the sync works... We have VMware SRM and Veeam, and they have been pretty slow and sluggish."
"It reduced the time for DR tests from the infrastructure side. Being able to get our work done in a matter of a couple of minutes so the app teams can get to work and can do their testing has been significant."
"Failover using Zerto is simply a one-button click, and it does everything else in restoring the VMs at a different datacenter (recovery site)."
"It helps with business continuity."
"The most valuable feature is the customization that allows me to set my protection group myself."
"Zerto's most valuable features include its user-friendly interface, multi-tenancy capabilities, and near-zero downtime recovery."
"We were able to see its benefits immediately after we deployed it."

Cons

"The restoration could be faster."
"It would be beneficial to have a more optimal Google Backup for larger environments."
"It is not a traditional restore process and it is somewhat limited in what we can do."
"It is challenging for small or medium-sized businesses to purchase it."
"For improvement, AvePoint can provide details on how the tool's backup scope works."
"The component in the product that can be improved revolves around the area where the tool should focus on providing more of a custom touch to the policies."
"I would like to see improvements in the tool's initial seed. The initial seed of around 10 TB of SharePoint data took 45 days to complete."
"AvePoint Cloud Backup's pricing could be lower and more flexible. Particularly, when dealing with smaller customers or more minor businesses, obtaining competitive pricing for bundles rather than on a one-by-one basis remains challenging."
"The setup process is time-consuming."
"If something happens, and we are out and about, I would like to be able to interface with it on our mobile phones. That would be great."
"I don't have any recommendations regarding how HPE Zerto Software can be improved."
"The performance was generally good, but occasional lag disrupted the flow, leaving room for improvement."
"The knowledge base could be improved. Sometimes, it's finicky, especially when moving storage around. We've had to redo entire processes, which was time-consuming and resulted in data loss. This has happened multiple times, and despite following support steps and contacting support, we often had to resolve issues on our own."
"The full site recovery is not up to SRM standards."
"There are still some pieces in testing that aren't automated. There are still some built-in scripts or workflows I wish Zerto would do out-of-the-box, versus having to PowerShell or have a vendor create it, or create it myself."
"For special situations, there are options within advanced settings. You don't have to dig too far for them, but they're not quite as straightforward."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I would say that the pricing policy of the product is flexible and good."
"The pricing part of the solution is based on a subscription model, which is based on the number of users or storage capacity."
"I rate the product's price a nine on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive."
"It is very good for many of my customers in the banking and finance segments. The price isn't a problem there, but in some other industries, people ask for a cheaper solution. When the price is an issue for the customer, we recommend Veeam, Metallic."
"It costs a little bit more than other competitors in the market."
"I am not sure, but I believe that the cost is $7 USD per user."
"The platform is more expensive than other vendors."
"In general, it's pretty fair because it is software. In our case, we built our own colo. So, the cost of the colo was very expensive, and that's where a lot of the equipment is. The same thing is there if we were going to spin up in the cloud, but as a solution, in general, it's pretty fair for what you get out of it and how it works. It's not cheap, but at the same time, you get what you pay for, and it's definitely worth the cost. You just have to understand that the cost of the software alone is not the total cost of the project of doing ransomware protection or disaster recovery. It's a piece of the pie, not the entire pie."
"When they changed their licensing model, pricing might have gotten a little more expensive for some use cases, but it has been pretty straightforward."
"In a world where others are catching up, e.g., VMware High Availability, there needs to be a less expensive option as well. When a customer has approximately 100 VMs, if you multiply by 40, we aren't charging a very high margin on it at all since the license is so expensive. We feel their pain. That is the most expensive part of it. The storage, CPU, and RAM are a lot less. It is the licensing that is really expensive. Whereas, with an option like VMware High Availability, it is a couple dollars per month. That is our spend that we are charged by VMware, then our margin is higher on those VMs. Giving us some ability to have higher margins, as an MSP, would be a good thing."
"Compared to other options like SRM, Zerto is a more expensive solution, making it primarily suitable for larger organizations."
"You are getting what you pay for, as this is a solution that requires minimal management after it is configured."
"The only negative part that I have seen so far has been the cost. It is kind of pricey, but you get what you pay for. Zerto is a lot faster than other solutions and you get enhanced performance."
"I am not very involved with the pricing, but from my understanding, it is fairly expensive for us. This is why we limit its use to our tier-one customers. We have other disaster recovery solutions for our other customers due to the cost."
"Zerto is very cost-effective. We get really great value for the cost of the service."
