High availability and geographical redundancy ensure reliable performance and cost efficiency
Amazon Aurora ( /products/amazon-aurora-reviews ) provides up to fifteen to sixteen read replicas. It replicates data across multiple Availability Zones, ensuring high availability and geographical redundancy, which can be considered a GR instead of a DR. As a managed service, maintenance tasks like backup and restore are handled by AWS ( /products/amazon-aws-reviews ), saving my organization significant time and money. Additionally, its fast cloning feature allows us to create a new clone from a large database swiftly, similar to a zero-copy cloning feature in Snowflake ( /products/snowflake-reviews ). This makes Amazon Aurora a compelling choice for my organization.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The provision of custom read and write endpoints eliminates the need for managing a separate proxy load balancer."
"The most valuable feature is that the maintainability is offloaded to the service provider. I don't have to maintain a database or do any administrative tasks, which comes in handy."
"Aurora's compatibility with MySQL or PostgreSQL benefited our database management. The migration from on-premise MySQL to Aurora was similar, so we didn't need to change our source code."
"One of the most valuable features is storage scaling."
"The most valuable features of Amazon Aurora include the global instance with the global writer endpoint, which allows failovers and instance switches without requiring changes in my code, thanks to the default global Route 53 endpoint."
"One of the standout features of Amazon Aurora is that we do not need to maintain disaster recovery or manage availability zones."
"Amazon Aurora stands out for its ease of use in a managed environment, inbuilt security, continuous backups, numerous read replicas, multi-region automated replication, and seamless integration with other AWS services."
"We had better control over the parameters that we could tweak in terms of intermediate storage and better indexing capabilities."
"Integrated R and geospatial functions are helping us improve efficiency and explore new revenue streams. "
"I enjoy the cybersecurity and backup features."
"The solution was executed quite quickly due to its columnar storage underground, which is the most valuable feature of our company"
"Its projections and encoding are excellent tools for tuning large volumes."
"I have found the solution to be scalable."
"Vertica's most outstanding features are the compression rates achieved and the speed of access of high volume data."
"We are also opening new areas of business and potential new revenue streams using Vertica's analytic functions, most notably geospatial, where we are able to run billions of comparisons of lat/long point locations against polygon and point/radius locations in seconds. "
"The solution has great capabilities. The tool that instructs the internal database forward is easy to use and is very powerful."

Cons

"It would have been helpful if they had provided some benchmarking numbers."
"The pricing could improve. It should be reduced."
"I would like to see more AI-related features in future releases."
"There is improvement needed to have more developer focus. Additionally, it would be helpful to have a stand-alone solution outside of Amazon. Amazon has a tendency to favor developing web-based clients, which may not always provide the fastest or most responsive solution as desired."
"I would like to see performance insights on the database based on the queries. Currently, we use SolarWinds as the monitoring tool. I would like to leverage SolarWinds’ performance insights in AWS services. SolarWinds gives larger insights when we run performance issues."
"Room for improvement might be in the UI, integrations, or data working capabilities for better user experience."
"While Amazon Aurora meets your current scaling and storage needs, there is room for improvement in cryptography and scalability compared to other databases."
"In Oracle, tools like Veridata allow for comparing databases and certifying data accuracy, even offering repair capabilities, which are missing in Aurora. There should be a similar comparison tool in Aurora."
"Limitations in group by projections is where I would like to see an improvement."
"Very bad support, I would rate it two out of 10."
"The integration of this solution with ODI could be improved."
"In my opinion, Vertica's documentation could be improved. Currently, there is not enough documentation available to gain a comprehensive understanding of the platform."
"We faced some challenges when trying to use the temporary tables feature."
"It should provide a GUI interface for data management and tuning."
"When it is about to reach the maximum storage capacity, it becomes slow."
"Some of our small to medium-sized customers would like to see containerization and flexibility from the deployment standpoint."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I would rate the pricing a six out of ten, with ten being expensive."
"It is quite expensive."
"The tool’s pricing depends on the instance type. For cost optimization purposes, we use the result instance category."
"There is no need to buy a license for the product. We can pay as per the use case."
"The price could be lower compared to its competitors."
"It is an expensive solution."
"It's an expensive product"
"It's difficult today to compete with open-source solutions. In these areas, there is a lot of competition and the price of this solution is a bit pricy."
"Read the fine print carefully."
"It's free up to three nodes and 1TB, and then get in contact with their sales guys."
"The price is reasonable. We use a pay per license model. Firstly, you need to buy a license. After that, you mainly pay the annual support fee of around 20% or 25%. I think their prices are quite reasonable."
"The price could be cheaper and it is best to negotiate the price."
"The pricing could improve, it is a little expensive."
"I think it's starting to get a little expensive. Open source products are starting to get more robust, so I think that's something that they need to start looking at in terms of licensing."
