Google’s generative-AI platform Gemini has seen a dramatic surge in developer usage, with monthly API requests more than doubling over a five-month period, according to industry reports.
Internal data reviewed by The Information shows that the number of requests developers sent to Google’s Gemini models jumped from about 35 billion in March 2025 to roughly 85 billion by August 2025 — an increase of nearly 150 percent in less than half a year.
What’s Behind the Growth?
The spike in activity coincides with the rollout of Google’s more advanced generative AI models, particularly Gemini 2.5 and the later Gemini 3 offerings. These newer versions have been widely adopted by developers and enterprises for building AI-powered applications, from chatbots and automation tools to more complex reasoning and data-driven workflows.
Market watchers say the increased requests reflect both greater model performance and the broadening scope of use cases that Gemini now supports. Michael Parekh, in a recent analysis, noted that the platform is gaining traction especially among enterprise teams building advanced AI systems.
Commercial Impact & Enterprise Adoption
Google sells access to its AI models primarily through the Gemini API via Google Cloud, where usage volume directly contributes to cloud revenue. The sharp rise in developer activity is expected to bolster Google Cloud’s financial performance, particularly as AI workloads become a larger piece of the division’s business.
The enterprise version of Gemini has also seen strong adoption. According to multiple reports, Gemini Enterprise now counts around 8 million subscribers across more than 1,500 companies. This tier combines access to AI chat functionality with tools for searching internal company data and building custom AI agents.
