I have used chatter. its ok if your a salesforce shop since its integrated with many of salesforces features. The social aspects are lacking. Since you mention sms capabilities are your looking for a application to do true enterprise Mobile IM but secure, than actually the BlackBerry BBM product works. its cross platform, secure, supports, im, voice and video, groups, etc.(sorry for the bad grammar, one arm is in a cast)
