Good filtering for common threats, but we would like more intelligent spam filtering and sandboxing
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the anti-spam, anti-phishing, anti-virus, and anti-spoofing."
  • "A lot of spoofed emails are still coming to the end-user, so the configuration for this option needs to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for email filtering.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the anti-spam, anti-phishing, anti-virus, and anti-spoofing.

What needs improvement?

A lot of spoofed emails are still coming to the end-user, so the configuration for this option needs to be improved.

We had an issue where our logs stopped working. We contacted support and they were able to correct the problem.

We created a list of rules used to approve email, but when the list hit a certain number of rules, all of the emails stopped coming in and we had to delete some rules.

In the next release, we would like to see more intelligence in the spam filtering with an ability to examine suspicious links. We would like to see them tested using sandboxing.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using SonicWall Email Security for more than five years.

How are customer service and support?

We contacted technical support over the issue with the logs stopping. They did something on the backend and the logging started again.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to using this solution, we relied on Microsoft Office 365 ATP, but we did not use a dedicated email security product.

What other advice do I have?

This solution has been really good for us and I recommend using it. If there is a big difference between what you are using now and this solution, then test it out. When we look for new solutions, we want to know what features are not in SonicWall. So far, we have stayed with it, but we would like to have more intelligent filtering in the future.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

An important component of our secure network that protects us against spam and malware
Pros and Cons
  • "This solution provides very good email security that protects us against spamming and malware."
  • "We would like to see more information on a dashboard about what is happening when it comes to spamming and malware."

What is our primary use case?

We use SonicWall Email Security as part of our secure environment. It monitors email and all activities from the office to the cloud. We have a hybrid cloud, which is a public cloud that has a private portal with security.

We experience a lot of spamming and we have deployed this solution to help control those types of attacks.

What is most valuable?

This solution provides very good email security that protects us against spamming and malware.

What needs improvement?

The cost is very high and should be improved.

It should include additional monitoring tools to identify computers that are causing problems. We are using third-party tools for this but they should be embedded directly into the solution. Ideally, we would like to be able to monitor all of the client email activities inside our network. We would like to see more information on a dashboard about what is happening when it comes to spamming and malware. SolarWinds is one of the monitoring tools that we are using.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been SonicWall Email Security for four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is not 100%. I would say that it is better than okay, but it can still be improved in terms of monitoring. There are some glitches that happened, although we were able to fix them.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a very scalable solution. We have approximately 200 users between our head office and regional office. We may increase our usage within the next three to five years.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not been in contact with technical support. Our own IT team is managing our email security and have been able to resolve any issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use another solution prior to this one.

How was the initial setup?

I would say that the initial setup is of moderate difficulty. It is not simple nor complex.

The deployment took one or two days and required one or two people. After the deployment, we are continuously monitoring and using this solution on a daily basis. We do not manage it every day, but it is always doing the monitoring.

What about the implementation team?

We do have a consultant and an integrator from the company that provided the hardware. They assisted us with the deployment are supporting us with all of our SonicWall products. They are SonicWall-certified network engineers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have a two-year license subscription and the price is very high.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

There are other solutions that work similarly to SonicWall that have a lower price. Because of the cost, we are now evaluating other products with the intention to replace all of our SonicWall products when the license expires.

What other advice do I have?

We also use the SonicWall firewall solution, which has many features to secure our local network. It protects each of the ports on all of our PCs and they are secured from outside of the network. It provides broadcast controlling, multi-layered security, and more. They provide a lot of features that other firewalls do not have and it is the most powerful one that I have seen.

My advice for anybody who is considering this solution is to first perform a feature comparison with other products and look at the new technology that is out there. That is the way to find the best option.

Overall, this is a solution that provides good security but at a very high cost.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Good scalability and stability but there is no in-country support in Nigeria
Pros and Cons
  • "The anti-spam aspect of the solution is its most valuable feature."
  • "They need well-trained partners in Nigeria."

What is most valuable?

The anti-spam aspect of the solution is its most valuable feature.

What needs improvement?

The after-sale support needs improvement. They don't have representation in my country. It's always through email or remote connectivity that we work under. That is why I just had to drop the solution and look for something else. If they had the support I needed I would still be using them.

They need well-trained partners in Nigeria.

The solution could improve its edgeware and email security, manageability and remote connectivity.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable, but it does have room for improvement.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable. We have about 500 users at the company using it currently.

How are customer service and technical support?

There is no support offered in my country. The closest options may be South Africa and Dubai, but with the time differences, it takes a long time to get assistance.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We've currently stopped using SonicWall and are currently using Check Point. We stopped using SonicWall due to the lack of in-country support. We also received a new device from Check Point, which offers more features for both firewall and email security.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was okay; we had someone fly to Nigeria to assist with the implementation. Deployment took about five working days. We had about two to three people managing and administrating the solution once it was deployed.

What about the implementation team?

We had an integrator assist with the initial setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We paid a licensing fee every two or three years. There are also additional costs associated with the solution.

What other advice do I have?

Before I got email security I was using the NSV 2400 as the edge device, as the firewall, so this solution integrated smoothly with the firewall and the Microsoft Exchange I was using. That was very helpful.

You definitely need very good after-sale support when you use this product, but we didn't have that. I had to deal with a few things, like ransomware, which could have been easier if I had access to better support.

Still, I would recommend the product. I would have kept it if I could have been assured better support.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Good at handling email security and has an easy setup
Pros and Cons
  • "Beside a few issues with specificity in the email protection controls, this product is very good at handling email security."
  • "The technical support from the company is not always very good at solving issues, but they offer access to a good community of users where problems are easily solved."

What is our primary use case?

My original use for this solution was as a reseller to learn more about the product. I know about other solutions and want to be able to provide information on a wider variety of products to clients that they may know about.

What is most valuable?

For me, one of the most valuable features would be that I want to block attachments by extension type in Office, but it is not possible using SonicWall Email Security — at least not in any solution that I have found. The SonicWall Firewall device does not block all macros with the version or configuration I have. This is a problem. But SonicWall support said that new features will be coming in September or October to resolve the issue. It will come, but I don't know exactly when and I have not seen it. So this will be the most valuable for me when it is available.

What needs improvement?

I think one improvement would be to add HTML recovery for scanning all attachments and links for malware and macros. It would be nice to add some features to block commands and the ability to open Office 365 products, even if it is just added as an extra feature.

Overall, I'd advise adding some blocking unit. It is something I need in an update, but I don't see any solution for it in the email security features.

They should add features for better control of blocking attachments, blocking macros, blocking contacts, etcetera. Features like this are very important. Contextual help features would be nice for those discovering the product. But attachment control for Office is important and should be the feature to focus on right now if they can deliver just one feature in the next release.

Other than that, really I think the features are perfect, but attachment controls are so important it hurts the usability of the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for about six months.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Recently I had a problem using a SonicWall firewall device. We had a problem especially with the NFC model (Near Field Communication), even if it was with only two or three devices. We didn't have any access to the interface and through IP management, I didn't get any reply or connection. I could send a ping and I got a return, but I could not access the page. I researched the problem and I know the solution, but it doesn't work. Problems such as this where certain devices can't be used limits the scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

I used SonicWall support sometimes. Most of the time I research and I solve any problems I have by myself because it is quicker and often easier. The company's actual support should be a little bit better.

On the other hand, I learned solutions to issues simply by doing some research on the SonicWall web pages and community. If I need some answers, I found I can resolve it through other options they provide in the community. Sometimes support staff didn't seem to know as much as the user community, or they don't give as much information as they should for users to be able to resolve an issue. Because of these things, when I had problems with SonicWall Email Security, I was more inclined to solve any problems I had by myself. So support could definitely be upgraded.

How was the initial setup?

The installation was not complex. Because I am a resale agent and engineer, I am familiar with other, similar products. This made the deployment easier.

What about the implementation team?

I use a reseller for the deployment, though I think I could have done it myself.

What other advice do I have?

One of the most important things for me is choosing an email security device. These products need to have full features to give you the best protection. products delivering this type of security need to remain up-to-date, available and usable.

I would rate it a nine out of ten.

Great email security platform, but it is complex to set up.

Valuable Features:

Behind the reason we chose SonicWall for my company is it has excellent packet analysis of normal and SSL encrypted traffic, application intelligence visualization and control, multiple Gigabit Ethernet LAN and WAN ports, flexible configuration and redundancy options. Outstanding antivirus scanner, advanced security structures. Content Filter, anti-virus and security are worthy. Easy to set up and use modest user interface. Plenty of security features to satisfy the most demanding security administrator.

Room for Improvement:

Cutting-edge options can be complex to manage, add-on security services increase the cost. No DNS proxy aptitude for Split-Brain or Split horizon setup. Very weak DHCP server options, only basics. Poor documentation. Limitations in the core design such as the inability to scan outbound HTTP traffic. Load balancing is not stable. VPN setup ambiguous, to say the least. Pricing options are somewhat complex. Documentation will require downloading various manuals in PDF format.
