Oracle Ravello [EOL] OverviewUNIXBusinessApplication

What is Oracle Ravello [EOL]?

Ravello is a cloud service that enables enterprises to run their VMware and KVM workloads, with datacenter-like (L2) networking, ‘as-is’ on the public cloud without any modifications. With Ravello, enterprises don’t need to convert their VMs or change their networking configuration to run their existing apps on the public cloud.

Provides cloud service nested virtualization support. Signing up and activating accounts is somewhat confusing.

What is most valuable?

The most useful service for our organization was the Oracle Ravello Cloud Service nested virtualization support.

How has it helped my organization?

It allows us to demonstrate how to deploy our product as well as provide hands-on-labs to customers. Our organization is still evaluating other use cases.

What needs improvement?

The process of signing up and activating accounts is somewhat confusing. Also, since Ravello was acquired by Oracle, it is still not fully integrated with other products and services. For instance, you still need a separate login account to access the service.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this service on and off since 2015, prior to being acquired by Oracle.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

I had a few issues with account access that I was able to work around. Also, there's currently no way to merge multiple accounts under different domains.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No stability issues encountered so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven't encountered any scalability issues with the Ravello Cloud Service.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Customer service was helpful when contacted.

Technical Support:

Technical support is available via email. At the time of this writing, it was not integrated with MOS.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We primarily used Amazon AWS for demos and labs. While it is our primary cloud provider, we also use different solutions that are not readily available on other cloud providers.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup (account creation) was confusing. When I signed up for the service, I received multiple emails with different links, credentials, and identity domains.

What about the implementation team?

I did this in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing on the Oracle Ravello Cloud is transparent, as they provide pricing calculators to predict usage costs. Licensing for software deployed on the service is determined by your software vendor and is independent of the service costs (BYOL). It would be nice if Oracle products were integrated into the licensing costs. For example, deploying Oracle database in the Ravello Cloud would include costs based on the Oracle Database Cloud service.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Amazon AWS and vCloud Air before choosing Ravello.

What other advice do I have?

Nested virtualization is a niche use case, but one which has many benefits for small to medium organizations that do not have a large infrastructure footprint or want to offload infrastructure for training and demos. Ravello Cloud service makes creating such environments simple with their innovative technology that runs on multiple cloud providers.
