Has many predefined correlation rules and is brilliant for investigation and log analysis
It is very complicated to write your own correlation rules without the help of Splunk support. What Splunk could do better is to create an API to the standard SIEM tools, such as Microsoft Sentinel. The idea would be to make it less painful. In ELK Stack, Kibana is the query language with which you can search log files. I believe Splunk has also a query language in which they search their log files, but once you have identified the log file that you want to use for further security correlation, you want to very quickly transport that into your SIEM tool, such as Microsoft Sentinel. That is something that Splunk could make a little bit less painful because it is a lot of effort to find that log file and forward it. An API with Microsoft Sentinel or a similar SIEM tool would be a good idea.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution's most valuable feature is its data modeling."
"It gives us the liberty to do more in terms of use cases."
"Correlating data across different systems via one interface will allow you to know your environment or identify incident data in ways you never imagined."
"Aggregation searches have reduced time and difficulty of identifying trends and conditions which need to reviewed."
"The client site login is pretty extensible and probably cost-effective."
"Splunk is stable, and this is why many customers want it."
"The solution allows easy gathering and ingestion of the data."
"Exporting is a good feature. It helps me out when I have to do reports. I do a lot of exporting and crunching of the numbers. Dashboards are okay for showing to the leadership, but for doing statistics and updating tickets, the export feature is very beneficial for me."
"The valuable features include getting an overview of the backup status and gaining an understanding of my backup environment."
"The scalability is great. It is one of the best advantages that I find important."
"Veritas NetBackup IT Analytics is technically much simpler than many backups, which provides a competitive advantage."
"The deduplication engine compared to Azure backups is a cost-efficient feature regarding storage."
"The most valuable aspects of Veritas NetBackup IT Analytics are its reporting capabilities and the ability to integrate with third-party tools, such as an ITSM system, for automated checks on live backup statuses."
"The most valuable feature of the product is the insight it provides on the console."
"The deduplication engine compared to Azure backups is a cost-efficient feature regarding storage."

Cons

"Certain sections of the developer documentation could use some updating and clarification."
"Missing capability for audio/video and image processing."
"While Splunk Enterprise Security offers valuable features, its cost is high and could be more competitive."
"Splunk can be an expensive solution. Technical support could be improved as well."
"Splunk's ability to analyze malicious activities scores an 8 out of 10, but there's room for improvement. By analyzing emerging patterns, Splunk could identify and predict potential threats more effectively."
"We are waiting for Dashboard Studio to mature a little bit more. There are some things that we are using with Classic Dashboards which have not yet made it to Dashboard Studio. We are waiting for that."
"The product's price may be an area of concern where improvements are required."
"I would like to get visibility into the data pipelines on heavy forwarders and indexers to see exactly their source and the cause of saturation when it occurs. This would help us learn even more about our high use applications."
"The process should be made easier."
"The solution should allow users to export data to Tableau."
"NetBackup is not great in disaster recovery (DR) and data center to DR setup, especially in the Cloud environment. Veritas Resiliency Platform is not very handy for cloud-to-cloud, cross-platform replication."
"The process should be made easier. It is very complicated, and there is more with NetBackup; it is very difficult for me to oversee."
"NetBackup is not great in disaster recovery (DR) and data center to DR setup, especially in the Cloud environment."
"The technical support from Veritas is disappointing as they take a long time, often over a month or two, to resolve issues."
"The quality of technical support has decreased over time with slower response times compared to before."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing and licensing is quite expensive. But for the value the product provides, it seems at par in the market."
"The pricing model is based on the number of gigabytes that you ingest into the Splunk system. So it can be an expensive solution."
"Splunk Enterprise Security is an expensive solution."
"The variables and the flexibility that Splunk provides are helpful, especially in a hybrid and multi-cloud environment."
"Expensive compared to other options."
"We have had a reduction in the time it takes to resolve issues and correlate what has failed."
"I think that most of the monitoring solutions are expensive."
"We have an unlimited one, and we pay yearly, but I don't know how much it costs. Previously, I worked for a startup, and when they started building it up, it was complicated for them because they didn't have the budget for that many licenses. It was very costly for them. So, startups might find it a little bit problematic because of the licensing, but for bigger companies, there is no issue."
"The product has a fair price."
