Has many predefined correlation rules and is brilliant for investigation and log analysis
It is very complicated to write your own correlation rules without the help of Splunk support. What Splunk could do better is to create an API to the standard SIEM tools, such as Microsoft Sentinel. The idea would be to make it less painful. In ELK Stack, Kibana is the query language with which you can search log files. I believe Splunk has also a query language in which they search their log files, but once you have identified the log file that you want to use for further security correlation, you want to very quickly transport that into your SIEM tool, such as Microsoft Sentinel. That is something that Splunk could make a little bit less painful because it is a lot of effort to find that log file and forward it. An API with Microsoft Sentinel or a similar SIEM tool would be a good idea.

A highly scalable and affordable product that provides insights into an organization’s infrastructure
I use the product to prevent ransomware attacks and know how my environment is working The product gives me insights into what's happening in my data, the infrastructure, and how my backups work. If there are problems in my network, the product enables me to check it on time. The most valuable…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The dashboards are the most valuable feature. We like the ability to drill in and see what queries are under the dashboard, build new visualizations, edit the querying, and see the reports."
"The ability to manage large amounts of generated data and to protect all devices from unauthorized use are the most valuable features."
"It has increased our business resilience. It's a top-of-the-line SIEM security product. It's the best tool for our security analysts which helps them do their job better. That then protects our company from adversary actors."
"It is very stable. We have not had any problems."
"The initial setup isn't overly complex."
"The logs on the solution are excellent."
"It is the best tool if you have a complex environment or if data ingestion is too huge."
"The initial setup is simple, not very complex. Initial deployment takes around 10 to 15 minutes to set up the entire base for Splunk including all three tiers."
"The deduplication engine compared to Azure backups is a cost-efficient feature regarding storage."
"My experience with the technical support by Veritas is pretty good."
"Veritas NetBackup IT Analytics is technically much simpler than many backups, which provides a competitive advantage."
"The valuable features include getting an overview of the backup status and gaining an understanding of my backup environment."
"The deduplication engine compared to Azure backups is a cost-efficient feature regarding storage."
"The scalability is great. It is one of the best advantages that I find important."
"The most valuable aspects of Veritas NetBackup IT Analytics are its reporting capabilities and the ability to integrate with third-party tools, such as an ITSM system, for automated checks on live backup statuses."
"The most valuable feature of the product is the insight it provides on the console."

Cons

"The configuration had a bit of a learning curve."
"Splunk needs to be able to hold more days of data. At the moment it only holds three months of data."
"Over time I will have more requirements and I can foresee the solution could improve the search algorithm to run and output the data faster."
"While scheduled reports can be embedded, Splunk dashboard can not be embedded directly without enabling cross origin."
"While Splunkbase (the app repository) has a lot of great content, some apps are terribly old and could stand to be updated or purged."
"Some of the terminology can be confusing, even for seasoned vets. Renaming components at this point would be a serious undertaking. However, it might be beneficial in the long run."
"The support and the pricing can be better"
"Better directions on search head clusters."
"The quality of technical support has decreased over time with slower response times compared to before."
"NetBackup is not great in disaster recovery (DR) and data center to DR setup, especially in the Cloud environment."
"The process should be made easier. It is very complicated, and there is more with NetBackup; it is very difficult for me to oversee."
"NetBackup is not great in disaster recovery (DR) and data center to DR setup, especially in the Cloud environment. Veritas Resiliency Platform is not very handy for cloud-to-cloud, cross-platform replication."
"The process should be made easier."
"The solution should allow users to export data to Tableau."
"During the last issue that occurred due to the counter-strike, we needed recovery instantly for a large number of machines, more than a thousand machines, and Cohesity was the best solution for us."
"The technical support from Veritas is disappointing as they take a long time, often over a month or two, to resolve issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Splunk Enterprise Security incurs a significant cost because of the amount of data we send, but we are fine with the value we're getting for that price."
"Expensive compared to other options."
"In addition to the licensing fee, there is also a support and maintenance charge."
"The pricing depends on the bandwidth of an organization and is good compared to some SIEM tools. IBM, for example, is quite costly. But Microsoft Sentinel is notably cheaper."
"The pricing model is expensive and a nightmare based on the amount of data."
"We had a yearly subscription."
"I have no opinion on pricing."
"Our customers often complain that the price of Splunk is too high."
"The product has a fair price."
