I haven't used Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics in a couple of years, so I don't know how it can be improved. I was pretty pleased with it and was self-taught on it, working a lot with their team at various times, but they were surprised that I was able to learn it all by myself. The documentation is not bad, and documentation is the main thing that any product can do to make themselves better because the easier it is to find examples of what you're trying to do improves the learning curve. I think it took me the longest to learn how to do the asynchronous processing and have things wait for other things to finish processing before continuing on in the workflow. I choose 8 out of 10 because the one reason that it's been rejected at T-Mobile is that everything has to go through a provisioning process and has to get approved, meaning the actual code base has to be investigated by T-Mobile before they'll allow us to use tools of that nature. For whatever reason, we just haven't been able to get that approval; I don't know if it's on Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics' side or if it's on our side. The more you can make it easier for companies to feel comfortable that your product is secure, robustly tested and bug-free, and free of any other kind of negative hacks, the more quickly it will get accepted.

Simplified integrations bring flexibility and efficiency to diverse industries through comprehensive features and robust support
SAP is already trying to make improvements for SAP Process Orchestration by releasing updates every quarter, including patches and modules, and from a security standpoint, while it's a tightly coupled tool, they are introducing a lot of enhancements aligned with current market trends. There are standard contents readily available for starting integrations, which suit around 90% of every industry across verticals including pharma, manufacturing, and employee data central with SuccessFactors integration. Regarding functionality-wise improvements in SAP Process Orchestration, they are now incorporating the Salesforce system. Previously, we needed to rely on a third-party adapter for integration within SAP, but now they are building their own adapters to connect with Salesforce. Additionally, there are options like data connectors using Ariba coming up with SAP Process Orchestration. There's much more to explore, especially as they release new patches, enhancements, and adapters each quarter.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have not come across anything that we have not been able to do with Pentaho, and it has proved to be a very flexible way of getting data from anywhere."
"Pentaho Data Integration is quite simple to learn, and there is a lot of information available online."
"We have been able to expose data services through the use of CDA relying on the same database as the reporting tools, thus avoiding inconsistencies among the data shown by reports and data acquired by external systems."
"As a result of one of the projects that we did in the Middle East, we achieved the main goal of fully digitalizing their population census."
"The amount of data that it loads and processes is good."
"The product is user-friendly and intuitive"
"Since we started using Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics, many of our manual tasks have become automatic, and we have increased our time for productive things."
"We have seen at least 30% savings in terms of effort, which has helped us to price our service and products more aggressively in the market and win more clients."
"The standard adapter with EBA abilities is the most valuable feature. It has good process integration."
"The most valuable feature of SAP Process Orchestration is its flexibility in being able to build integrations with SAP systems and non-SAP systems."
"It is strategically focused to forecast a global integration platform for our business."
"Someone who has to work on a PO should at least have a basic understanding of Java because as it is an integration tool, the way SAP provides to transform the messages from one structure to another is very good."
"SAP is now one of the leaders in integration."
"SAP Process Orchestration is middleware where we are able to manage and interact with everything from a single location. One of the most beneficial areas is monitoring which is very easy because it is all in one place. There are many adapters added recently that can be used for new functionality. The solution is easy to operate and it is more mature than the cloud solution provided by SAP."
"The solution is stable."
"The performance of data processing has increased."

Cons

"I have been facing some difficulties when working with large datasets. It seems that when there is a large amount of data, I experience memory errors."
"Lumada could have more native connectors with other vendors, such as Google BigQuery, Microsoft OneDrive, Jira systems, and Facebook or Instagram."
"It's not very stable, at least not in the case of the community edition. I'm working with the community edition right now and I think perhaps it is because of that it is not very stable, it causes the system to sometimes hang. I'm not sure if this is the case for pair tiers."
"The reporting definitely needs improvement. There are a lot of general, basic features that it doesn't have. A simple feature you would expect a reporting tool to have is the ability to search the repository for a report. It doesn't even have that capability. That's been a feature that we've been asking for since the beginning and it hasn't been implemented yet."
"For managing very large volumes of data, Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics is not the best tool, but it is in a good position to handle millions of records."
"I experience difficulties when handling millions of rows, as the data movement from one source to another becomes challenging."
"It is difficult to process huge amounts of data."
"The stability is not great, especially when you start patching it a lot because things get broken."
"The solution isn't meant to scale when high-volume transactions are in play; the scalability could improve."
"It would be beneficial to enhance the ease of implementing new projects and improve overall stability in our implementations."
"Process Orchestration doesn't provide authentication for data sent to us, meaning we have to rely on client certificate-based or basic authentication."
"The user interface of SAP Process Orchestration should be more modern to enhance its appeal. It can seem complicated and outdated to new users."
"The solution is not very scalable because it is at the end of its life."
"It is not a scalable solution for the cloud. I would not recommend this for organizations that are primarily cloud-based."
"The older version of the solution will no longer be supported."
"Some configurations can be a little tricky."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution reduced our ETL development time by a lot because a whole project used to take about a month to get done previously. After having Lumada, it took just a week. For a big company in Brazil, it saves a team at least $10,000 a month."
"If a company is looking for an ETL solution and wants to integrate it with their tech stack but doesn't want to spend a bunch of money, Pentaho is a good solution"
"It does seem a bit expensive compared to the serverless product offering. Tools, such as Server Integration Services, are "almost" free with a database engine. It is comparable to products like Alteryx, which is also very expensive."
"The price of the regular version is not reasonable and it should be lower."
"When we first started with it, it was much cheaper. It has gone up drastically, especially since Hitachi bought out Pentaho."
"I use it because it is free. I download from their page for free. I don't have to pay for a license. With other tools, I have to pay for the licenses. That is why I use Pentaho."
"Sometimes we provide the licenses or the customer can procure their own licenses. Previously, we had an enterprise license. Currently, we are on a community license as this is adequate for our needs."
"There is a good open source option (Community Edition)."
"Normally, you will have to choose CPU-based licensing...I rate the tool price a five out of ten."
"Looking at market conditions, vendors nowadays are giving products at very low price levels. However, SAP Process Orchestration have not yet reduced their prices. The prices could be reduced a lot to stay competitive."
"The fee for maintenance is costly."
"The solution is highly-priced."
"The price of SAP Process Orchestration was reasonable."
"My company deals with different pricing models of the product, according to which we don't pay for the solution directly, but we do pay for the maintenance part."
"The product is not a low-priced solution, but I can say that it is competitively priced in the market."
"We subscribe to annual licenses, and the competitive license cost is reasonable."
