Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Centralized backups have reduced operational effort and improve ransomware recovery readiness
Nimesa Backup and Recovery for AWS can be improved by adding reporting capability and the possibility for predictive insights if a backup is going to fail earlier, as we have with artificial intelligence-driven solutions. Additionally, more compression or deduplication to optimize storage would be beneficial, and if it could be integrated to allow us to create policies using an infrastructure as code framework, that would provide an easier, automated way to manage policies. Regarding Nimesa Backup and Recovery for AWS's artificial intelligence capabilities, I think its governance and security should improve more as they are not on par. Prediction of backup failure should be available, and it is not that accurate. I am not entirely sure about the accuracy and reliability of the artificial intelligence output because it is not that accurate. I have not used it that much. Since I saw that the basic configuration and backup configuration worked well, the solution has been reliable in our experience with consistent backup execution and successful recovery testing. Automated monitoring and alerting helped identify issues proactively, which improves confidence in recovery objectives and recovery time objectives.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data."
"The jobs we have baseline into the AltaVault, it seems to be able to recover faster than the previous solution."
"We're doing AWS S3 with Glacier with cloud-based backup and the integration is good, as it works with Veeam and Commvault."
"Having a solution there that can move data from on-premise into the cloud and back is a massive win."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data, as you're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications."
"Our restore window has been cut by 10 times, from having to pull back from tape - I'd definitely recommend it."
"Overall, these features make day-to-day backup operations more structured, reduce operational overhead, and improve confidence around recovery preparedness and cloud resilience."
"Previously, if we had any disaster or any issue, it would take days to bring the environment back up to the original state, and with Nimesa Backup and Recovery for AWS, we can do that within a couple of hours, which greatly reduces downtime in the case of disaster recovery."
"Nimesa Backup and Recovery for AWS helped us automate backup scheduling and policy management, gave us centralized visibility with a dashboard across AWS workloads of multiple accounts, helped us with a faster recovery process, and majorly reduced our operational overhead while improving our ransomware and data protection."

Cons

"NetApp's own competing products complicate things."
"The initial installation is difficult for my clients who have it on both on-premises and on cloud."
"We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are knowledgeable."
"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."
"The initial setup phase of the tool was difficult."
"I don't actually use the solution."
"We've had a lot of issues, crashed the service console a lot, service crashes."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"One area where Nimesa Backup and Recovery for AWS could improve is expanding advanced analytics and predictive monitoring capabilities, especially for identifying backup risks, storage optimization opportunities, and recovery readiness trends more proactively."
"Regarding customer support, as this is a very new product and relatively new in the market, I am not sure how long they have been around, but there seems to be a lack of understanding with the support team."
"Nimesa Backup and Recovery for AWS has a fairly small market presence."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"The price is a bit high."
