Offers lot of storage space, and you can set up several different types of backups
I’ve had some issues with iDrive. I don’t have an updated version of Windows, so that might have something to do with it. I’m running a 2018 version of Windows 10, and I haven’t had any issues with Acronis. But I have had issues with iDrive, though they do seem to fix issues, but more slowly. It would be nice if iDrive could do what Acronis does and be able to do local disk images. Instead, the only local backup they do is a file backup. I’ve had issues like the scheduler mysteriously erasing my settings. I have to babysit it and make sure it’s doing the backups regularly because sometimes when they do updates, it scrambles my backup settings. I found out later that it hasn’t been doing backups for a few days, which is annoying. The email updates were another issue I had. It was giving me email updates for successful backups, and I don’t need my inbox full of those messages. And now I told them, I need an email message when the thing’s not running. But it doesn’t work that way.

Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"iDrive will keep up to 30 versions of a file."
"The encryption process is the most useful part of using iDrive for data security. I also use the background backup feature which helps me to clone and conduct computer backup. These features are very reliable, especially when restoring images from damaged servers. But I don't use the real-time backup feature; I always use the scheduled backup."
"Able to reduce administrative burden on tape management."
"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."
"Leverage the SE and the technical expertise within NetApp; they offer really great services, and they'll provide you with an honest approach to how to address your business problems."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data. You're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"We're doing AWS S3 with Glacier with cloud-based backup and the integration is good, as it works with Veeam and Commvault."
"It's so easy to work with."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."

Cons

"I’ve had issues like the scheduler mysteriously erasing my settings. I have to babysit it."
"The disadvantage of using real-time backup in iDrive is that it significantly impacts server performance, causing considerable speed issues. The archiving process needs improvement along with the management of bandwidth and CPU. There should also be more options for creating conditions to manage the workload of the environment, making the system easier to balance."
"The solution needs faster indexing."
"I don't actually use the solution."
"The initial installation is difficult for my clients who have it on both on-premises and on cloud."
"Also, we were actually able to discover a bug in the product that they're still working on. It's a bug with the Server Message Block (SMB) Protocol with older Windows operating systems."
"We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are knowledgeable."
"My advice is to stick with ONTAP and ownCloud because NetApp AltaVault is going to die."
"It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution."
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"According to our evaluation done five to seven years ago, iDrive is cheap and it covers a lot of our needs."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"The price is a bit high."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
