It provides printable reports and security configuration advice.
We were about to receive a group level audit when we deployed Idera SQL Secure. In a previous audit, we had received some bad ratings and advice on security for our SQL Server instances. Idera SQL Secure comes bundled with the best practices rules, advice and polices from Microsoft and other standards organizations. It is able to take snapshots of the current state of the servers for which it was configured to monitor, match that state against these best practice rules, and present you with a report. With that report, you can take action on what is right or wrong. With this tool at hand, we were able to fix all of our issues, but there were a few which didn't apply to our specific case. Furthermore, our Information Security Officer and internal auditing department are now able to monitor better and have a clear picture on the security state of our SQL Server instances at any point in time.

We have created customized alerts to help prevent unauthorized access, specifically for one of the banks, collaborating with the team to set it up on the core banking database. Organizations considering Oracle Audit Vault should recognize that its integration to Oracle database is seamless, allowing for detailed reporting, alerts, and high security. We have worked with customizable alerts regarding Oracle Audit Vault. We have created one alert based on the categories available in Oracle Audit Vault. Oracle Audit Vault uses an agent that is pushed from the appliance, which I downloaded the JAR file from. We are now considering creating a replication and patching process with planned downtime, but we have not yet experienced scaling out or patching. I would rate this review with an overall rating of nine.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Shut up and pay."
"The critical event alerts and reporting features have greatly reduced loss of man hours that would have been spent on going through the whole audit event logs."
"Oracle Audit Vault was used extensively and our clients are quite comfortable with it."
"It has reduced the stress of collecting database event logs in silos from each database."
"Oracle Database Firewall, Database Vault and Data hiding tools present a layered security approach to protecting, controlling, auditing and hiding sensitive data and access to sensitive data."
"It has provided us with a unique opportunity to automate risk discovery."
"All of the other components that make up the infrastructure in the environment including the operating system are also quite valuable."
"A powerful, flexible solution for database traffic monitoring."
"The solution is very stable and reliable."

Cons

"Usability and installation procedure could be made easier."
"Some of the earlier versions have not matured enough."
"An easy, friendly user interface would be nice to have, since this would enable administrators to identify important events with a prompt response."
"Some of our customers were asking about latency when the application wants to get to the database."
"This kind of solution should supply more analytical data for the traffic that comes in."
"Currently, you need two servers: one for Audit Vault and one for the firewall. If they can combine them into one server, it will be great because it is costly to have two servers. It will also make its installation easier. I have heard that in the new version, there will be only one server for both."
"The underlying mechanism for collecting SQL statements (REDO collector) is still based on Oracle Streams technology."
"This solution doesn't audit the network."
"We did encounter some stability issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"This solution is definitely not expensive, and it is a small fraction of the overall database licensing costs."
"The licensing cost is about $360,000, annually."
"For the bank, the license was $48,000 last time. That was the licensing for the bank on just one license."
"Oracle can be an expensive solution depending on the options and user needs."
