Improved data modeling has reduced system footprint and strengthened finance workflows
I assess the benefits of IDERA ER_Studio's metadata management for my organization as not as good as Erwin's. Erwin's metadata management is better in how it handles data. There is a lot more user involvement in managing the metadata, primarily because in IDERA ER_Studio, the logical and physical models are separately defined in the same file, so you have to map them every single time. In Erwin, it has a unified structure, so if you make a change in the logical model, it automatically shows up in the physical model. You have to go through a couple of steps in the IDERA model to make sure everything has moved over. While that is not that inconvenient when you are actually doing development, as far as metadata management, that is prone to things getting dropped and missed. The collaboration tools in IDERA ER_Studio are adequate, but I think with Erwin, there is more of an opportunity for things to crash. Changes can be merged in IDERA more fluidly; however, the locking and sharing are a little bit more defined in Erwin. I think the learning curve for Erwin might be easier than IDERA ER_Studio, especially with connecting to different models and systems.

Allows for much easier cross server monitoring and administration
I use this software bundle for managing multiple SQL Server instances. The environment has a large number of SQL Servers serving disparate applications, both internal and external.  This product allows for much easier cross server monitoring and administration. When relatively few administrators…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This application does a lot of things, as do competitor products, but the main reason to go with this product was the ability to create many automations, where we can improve our work and our process."
"When validating the model, the ability to provide sub-models to developers, and generate a physical model from the logical, makes it easier to review a logical model with stakeholders."
"We are able to document the data lineage and data flows of our data from one system to another."
"Before this tool, just managing the changes and publishing the models to the users became very cumbersome, and this tool has simplified our day-to-day tasks a lot."
"The data modeling module is important to me because I am a database developer and designer, and I also take part in designing applications and that always starts with data modeling, and it's very fast, reliable, up-to-date, so easy to use, smooth."
"One of the valuable features is inheritance when joining tables. When setting up RI and domains and rules, ER/Studio does a lot of the grunt, boilerplate code that would otherwise have to be hand-coded."
"I like the fact that it has a scripting language that allows you to automate and write your own scripts."
"We have been able to quickly create models for our enterprise-wide databases, even when some of them are third-party databases."
"SQL Server Configuration: This allows admins to compare and edit server configurations for one or more SQL servers saving a lot of time when managing large numbers of instances."
"This product allows for much easier cross server monitoring and administration."

Cons

"I would like to upload, a database with about 3,000 tables. It takes so much time and, finally, it freezes the whole solution so that I actually cannot work with that environment. For the data warehouse, it's fine because I have 20 or 30 tables. It works fine. But, when I reverse-engineer the database with 3,000 tables, it freezes and it's hard to upload and reverse-engineer such environments in ER/Studio."
"One limitation I have found in ER/Studio is that when you want to make some changes to the table definitions, you have to go item by item. You cannot do it globally. Another issue concerns defining the foreign keys between the different tables. It is a little more tedious in the ER/Studio than in ERrwin. With ERwin it is direct."

"I'd like the ability to debug the errors ourselves instead of having to call them. There are certain types of errors that, I wouldn't say they come up regularly, but when you have an error it is very often the same type of error. Knowing that it's a Type III or Type I, it would be nice to have some kind of debugging facility for us to use to find out where the problem that threw that error occurs. That would be a really cool feature."
"The repository causes continuous problems, as it's slow and sometimes crashes."
"Diagram versioning is not very intuitive Data Dictionary Bindings is not very intuitive"
"It is expensive! Licensing requires a subscription to their support site."
"Documentation tends to range from pointless to incomprehensible."
"A set of T-SQL admin snippets might be useful, e.g., code to create users, databases, indexes, etc. It would definitely be welcomed in the bundle."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I use the product's trial version."
"Pricing is expensive and on the higher-end."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is bad and ten is good, I would rate the licensing cost as a seven or eight. It's not too expensive for us."
"At my previous company using ER/Studio, a database compare took four hours before using the product and 15 minutes after using the product."
"The process of licensing could be much simpler, from our experience."
"The price of this product is okay."
"Pricing is on point, but do your due diligence - not every developer needs the tool."
"It is priced fairly. It's around the same as erwin and other competitors' costs."
