We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"You can do restores very quickly. You can mount a drive and restore it right from the drive.""SPIR is Instant Recovery for Spectrum Protect. It sends snapshots using space efficiently and blocking backups to the Spectrum Protect server. It provisions the snapshot from the backup server to the same or new server near instantly.""It's a very stable product, and we've never had any downtime with it.""I've had no problems with the stability of this solution.""The licensing isn't very clear. They should work to simply or clarify the cost structure.""The solution offers very good flexibility.""One of the main things that I like about IBM is the versioning of the data - meaning that we can have multiple versions of a file or directory of a server.""IBM Spectrum Protect offers stable software and products."

"The solution was stable and reliable.""The product is good in a small environment when looking to a backup on a tape.""It has good stability. Its interface is very good, responsive, and easy for restoring data. I use it for backup, encryption, and restore operations, and it works. I am using many agents from VM to LMDP. I also use an agent for SQL Server, which has advanced options because it is the Enterprise version.""The most valuable feature of Veritas Backup Exec is the ease of use.""The solution is very fast. It does not take a long time to backup everything.""Veritas is good for small environments.""I like that Backup Exec integrates with Microsoft Exchange. We can retrieve backups from the email boxes.""It's quite stable, and so far, we have had no technical issues with Veritas Backup Exec."

Cons
"Its management part can be better and simplified. It is kind of a beast as compared to Commvault or Veeam, but they are more user-friendly. They are also easier to learn, whereas Spectrum Protect definitely takes time. They should simplify it. Our teams are pretty comfortable with it because we have been using it for a long time, but from the perspective of a new user who is evaluating or using this solution, it is definitely more complex in terms of manageability. Its monitoring could be improved so that it can even monitor the jobs that are scheduled by external schedulers. There are situations where a database team might decide to use their own schedulers, but currently, Spectrum Protect is not able to catch those jobs in the Operation Manager console.""Restoring massive files is a very time-consuming process.""The main admin console from the UI cannot do anything in the product. It just allows us to maintain, maybe, 30% to 40%. For the rest, we have to use the command line.""It can be improved for large file systems with many files. Spectrum Protect can restore large files very well, but if you're restoring millions of little files, it is not as great. At one point, we tried to implement the VMware module with it, and it was awful and terrible. I don't know if that has improved. If it hasn't, this would be one big improvement.""I think Spectrum Protect's interface is not so user-friendly, but the interface is not so friendly. Some of the functions are too complicated. I prefer a simpler solution.""The initial setup is complex.""The software is complex; setup is complex.""I need two separate solutions for virtual and physical systems. I need IBM Spectrum Protect Plus for virtual systems and Spectrum Protect for physical systems and that's a pain. It would be an improvement if they were combined."

More IBM Spectrum Protect Cons →

"The pricing is an area of improvement and the mode of marketing it.""We need to have duplication and better compression.""I would like to improve their ability to back up the cloud environment. Additionally, it would be nice to have simpler UI.""I wish that they have an outlet for the other products from Veritas built into the Backup Exec product. For example, Backup Exec does only server backup. Currently, it is possible to read the backup of one other product, but if they can add more products so that you can just go into the dashboard of these other products by clicking on a button within the Backup Exec product, it would be great.""Whenever a job fails, it would be a great improvement to be able to resume the job from that feature. Suppose a job was started this morning and that it is going on while there are interruptions like network issues, server restart issues, server connectivity issues, services stopping, etc. For some reason, let's assume that the job failed or that it was mistakenly canceled by another person. It will be a great improvement if that failed job can be continued.""The reports could be made in an easier way.""The EDR should be looked at, as the operating system is too weak.""One area that needs improvement is SQL backup. Backup Exec doesn't support higher availability."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "IBM provides an open license policy, which is more like a gentlemen's agreement."
  • "One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
  • "It is fairly reasonable as compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
  • "It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
  • "It is expensive."
  • "The solution is expensive."
  • "I don't have an idea about the pricing. They send that over to someone else, but I know that one of the issues they had was the licensing costs. I don't think they were happy with how they were charged."

  • "Its price is reasonable."
  • "This product is priced for smaller customers."
  • "There is an evaluation license available to test this solution."
  • "The pricing can be improved."

  • "It is not an expensive product."
  • "The solution could be more cost-effective."
  • "The price is reasonable for the features it offers."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by Veritas Backup Exec users.

An IT Network Analyst at a manufacturing company says, “The backup potential of the solution is very good. It's protected us in the past very well and allowed us to get up and running after an attack with minimal loss. As far as if we need to restore a file, the solution absolutely has improved the way our organization functions. It saves us a lot of time. We're backing up all of our servers with it.”

PeerSpot user Masoud G., Senior Network Administrator at MapnaBE, mentions, “I prefer to use a tape library and Veritas Backup Exec is fully compatible with different tape libraries. So I prefer this software. It also has easy user and file recovery.”

Kayode O., Chief Technology Officer at a tech company, explains, “This solution creates a differential backup to reduce storage requirements. This solution is not complex and you do not have to be too technical to use it. Veritas offers granular restore, which is an option that many other solutions do not have. It allows you to restore, for example, a single SharePoint document, rather than an entire site.”

Rowland G., Product Brand Manager at Epsidon Technology Distribution, states, “The one thing for the last 12 months which has been very good for Veritas was the instance-based license. This means that you're able to license per instance, not only per physical server. And also, the incremental backup which they introduced for virtual servers, where it makes it much quicker to restore, it just automatically is able to mount it back to the original backup. This makes it much quicker when you're doing the restore.”
