A multi-functional solution but has poor stability and performance-related issues
We are using version 4 of IBM Application Performance Management, and it is deployed on-premises. We use it for internet banking and mainly for application performance on-site. For example, if we face performance-related issues in one of our software or managed services, we use this solution to…

Real-time monitoring has improved our banking API performance and supports detailed business transaction analysis
The real-time monitoring is what we can see for anything that is needed in terms of CPU, memory, or the connections or the sessions related. It's real-time monitoring of performance of each of the components, which is what we need and use all the time. It's highly effective, I would say. Infrastructure visibility, transaction monitoring, to check the actual user experience in terms of the response time, MRT and all those things. We do the component monitoring like the API performance and the connections and all those things, but we also do the business process monitoring and business transaction monitoring.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup was straightforward and took minimal effort."
"Specifically, with IBM, the visibility into detailed process information is more tangible, as on the OS level APM displays all processes (or the top 10 processes) that are consuming CPU or resident memory, which is the most important thing that is not always available with other vendors."
"The most valuable feature is the breakdown that it provides, such as a description of the fields for a particular transaction."
"Because we have partnerships with other partners, I can share a bit about what I've noticed with IBM APM compared to other vendor solutions. Specifically, with IBM, the visibility into detailed process information is more tangible. On the OS level, APM displays all processes (or the top 10 processes) that are consuming CPU or resident memory. This is the most important thing that is not always available with other vendors."
"IBM Application Performance Management has improved the way my organization is able to function."
"I would recommend this solution to others."
"The transaction tracking feature from IBM is the most important feature for us; it is something that provides a terrific value for us and our clients."
"The most valuable feature is the breakdown that it provides, such as a description of the fields for a particular transaction."
"All the metrics are baselines in networks, infrastructure, application, and user experience."
"Splunk AppDynamics significantly aids us because as soon as we identify a problem, we immediately receive API call insights through the AI version currently in use, suggesting resolution pathways and options such as restarting the server or application."
"It provides a lot of data, so it helps businesses identify their user base."
"Applications: This provides us insight into how our applications are performing within our environments and affords us the ability to identify opportunities and make changes to code / environment to effect positive performance lift."
"Unified Monitoring Application Performance Management End User Monitoring Infrastructure Visibility Application Analytics Business Insights: real-time insights into IT operations, customer experience and business outcome."
"The most valuable feature is the application performance, and we have details such as CPU utilization and memory utilization, which we make use of to finalize the amount of CPU power or memory that we should allocate to our ports."
"We have been able to monitor our applications more accurately."
"Insights outside of the code we write."

Cons

"It's still missing some platforms. For example, if you look to applications itself, it is missing the interface."
"The demo that was provided to us is not working very well. At times, there are errors."
"With APM, we noticed that the agent can cause a lot of issues for the application, making the agent very unreliable."
"Its web user interface is a little bit old in comparison to other solutions, such as New Relic, and it should be improved."
"The stability is not great and should be better."
"The stability is not great and should be better."
"Its web user interface is a little bit old in comparison to other solutions, such as New Relic, and it should be improved. Its scalability and technical support should also be improved. Currently, it is scalable, but only in a vertical way. They provide good technical support, but the initial steps for a new case can be improved to fasten the resolution process."
"The solution, itself, has a negative impact on the performance of the machine."
"Support is off-shore and somewhat slow."
"We have not had stability issues for end-users, but for admins specifically, the UI can be slow, since they can see all applications/nodes/etc."
"If AppDynamics could do a one-agent function with their actual monitoring effectiveness, it will be the greatest tool."
"Application Analytics' performance in pure and native cloud environments could be improved."
"I would like to be able to monitor both cloud an on-prem infrastructures, displayed in one dashboard."
"The scalable of this solution is relative."
"As an administrator, I would love to be able to manage the update of agents from the controller itself."
"AppDynamics is stable in terms of product features, but the core is a major concern."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"As I previously indicated, I initiated the IBM and uncovered all its elements. Consequently, I'm not inclined towards a licensing approach."
"IBM APM is one of the cheaper products on the market, while everything necessary to get started is included in the license."
"The licensing fees can be paid every six months or on a yearly basis."
"The product’s licencing policy is competitive. However, properly identify and size your needs to get the best rate."
"There is a license needed to use the solution and it is expensive. The licensing model needs to improve."
"The pricing is quite comparable to similar solutions in the market. All these solutions at the moment are cheap, but it is like paying for insurance; you pay insurance to avoid major damage."
"There is a license to use this solution. However, the clients pay for the licenses we are the service provider."
"There is no standard license instead, the license is adapted to the organization's requirements."
"You are required to purchase licenses whether you use it or not. It is not pay-as-you-use."
"I would say the solution is affordable because it is widely used across financial service sectors."
"The licensing scheme is very complex. They need to make it easier."
