Has integrated solutions and rapid recovery made management smoother and more reliable
There is the latest update from HPE regarding HPE SimpliVity. For virtualization, HPE has to depend on other manufacturers, OEMs such as VMware or Hyper-V. Recently, HPE declared the VM essential virtualization solution. In the future, if HPE integrates HPE SimpliVity with VM essential, that will be a great combination. Functionality-wise, I am totally satisfied with HPE SimpliVity, but for improvement, if HPE integrates its own virtualization solution, this combination and integration will be beneficial because this integration can be configured with the cloud-based system. A VM can be uploaded to the cloud from this, which will be advantageous for backup to other sites.

Crashed continuously, complex to deploy, and bad after-sales support - NETAPP FIXED the problems in 2022
Their after-sales support, SLA, and third-parties availability should be improved. NetApp's support is very difficult to engage. We have an SLA of onsite support within 24 hours. but they don't respect the SLA. Its stability was very bad. It has been crashing continuously. In one year, we got three crashes, which is unbelievable for an appliance that is guaranteed for 10 years without any crashes. In 2022, NetApp Italy, driven by the country manager Davide Marini, fixed all our issues and added additional computation power for free. This is a great example of customer care. They could have done it right the first time of course, but admitting the errors and putting in place such a remediation plan has been a very professional behavior.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We were under promised and over delivered!"
"It's a very good solution for disaster recovery."
"The most valuable features are replication and backup."
"We can backup with more frequency and minimize RPO and RTO."
"Now, the performance is much better, and we can take snapshots and backups of really big servers in just a matter of seconds."
"As an early adopter of SimpliVity’s hyper-converged infrastructure, we’ve seen significant benefits of the solution."
"We have full trust that it will help us in the next few years to deliver the IT functionality that we need in the firm that I work for."
"As a product, SimpliVity is better than others due to the fact that it has its own WAN optimizer optimization technologies then dedupe and compression ratios are high, and we can get support from a single vendor."
"This is a strong product and it works very well, and the processes around it continue to grow and mature."
"It is scalable, and NetApp Deployment Engine (NDE) makes its deployment easier."
"NetApp HCI has improved our organization by allowing us to put more time into investing in new ideas and spending less time in the administration of the solution."
"HCI has provided us with efficiencies and mobilities similar to that of the public cloud."
"Scalability was another thing I was looking at. The solution, by its very nature, is designed to be expandable and flexible, so you don't have to buy performance you don't need today, but you're also not stuck with something you can't expand."
"It is easy to administrate the solution, and the company handles its technical support well."
"The solution has generally affected storage performance in our organization by adding a high-performance storage option into the environment."
"The multi-vertical aspect is what is most valuable for us. The main reason we wanted a multi protocol was because Amazon was not able to provide us with access to the same data as we could get from Linux and Windows lengths. That was our value proposition for this solution."

Cons

"We had failures out-of-the-box of our new technology along with a few bugs during the initial setup."
"The stability and scalability of the product are areas of concern where improvements are required."
"It could integrate better with other platforms. It's a proprietary solution of HPE, so you are stuck. Before I was running SimpliVity as an independent solution. it wasn't a card and software, so you could put in whatever server, IBM, Dell, etc."
"HPE SimpliVity could be more flexible and scalable. I don't feel SimpliVity is flexible or easily scalable because I still need to buy another server to add to my clusters."
"There are some problems with support from HPE."
"We have had some failures out-of-the-box. We have had some failures with the OmniStack module. One thing that we didn't fully understand was how much of the internal memory was used up by the OmniStack piece, which basically makes up SimpliVity."
"The product should be competitive with other brands."
"SimpliVity needs to improve the support for native backups, like SQL and Exchange."
"It would be great if they took something like kernel storage and integrated straight into the NetApp as well."
"Unfortunately, the solution has not reduced our hypervisor footprint."
"They could improve the packaging."
"To improve the product, they should make it more flexible."
"The problem is that it needs to be much more stable, for example, when I want to do the upgrade to 1.7 that just released, I also need to issue a ticket to the support guy in India and he asked me to deploy another mlock. There are a lot of manual steps compared with other products."
"The price should be lowered. It's a little expensive."
"The price of the solution is okay but could improve."
"There's a limitation with a block in the file. That's where I see that it's not very efficient for upgrades and for management."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Investing less time in configuration and management means that you will have more time to focus on what is really important: Your company's innovation and rapid commercialization."
"Upfront costs seems high at first look, but after analyzing all the benefits of SimpliVity, we have come out ahead."
"Its licensing is yearly."
"Its licensing is quite easy. There is a model license, but it depends on the system you buy. There are no extra costs. There is only one license."
"The price should be cheaper."
"The licensing cost could be lower."
"The pricing is very high."
"ESXi licensing is a big part of initial investment if you do not already have that covered."
"This solution saved our organization time (35 percent) and money. We have a hefty group of developers, and if you multiply that by 30 to 35 percent, that is quite a bit of money."
"Its pricing is lower than our previous solution."
"Where we lost nearly 75 percent of our infrastructure due to a malicious attack and were able to recover two and a half hours into it due to the integration, it saved us and all of our customers. Because we were able to recover so fast from the attack, the solution paid for itself right there."
"The price of the solution is okay but could improve."
"You still have to pay for the licensing for VMware and Red Hat licenses separately. It's not all inclusive at this point."
"This solution reduced our maintenance costs. We were going to have to pay one to two million dollars to put in compute nodes. We are avoiding those costs."
"Its price is aligned with the market. In addition to the standard licensing fees, there is an integrator cost."
"Licenses run on a yearly basis, and there aren't any additional fees other than the standard licensing fee."
