We performed a comparison between HPE SimpliVity and NetApp HCI [EOL] based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Dell Technologies, Nutanix, VMware and others in HCI."The failover protection and the ability to expand storage and nodes with no downtime are by far the best physical features we have benefited from."
"The support has been amazing and quick to reply."
"StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind."
"I've been really impressed with it so far. I think it's pretty great, actually. It does exactly what we need it to do, and it does it well, so I would recommend it. Plus, the support has been very good."
"It integrates (fully) with VMware and Veeam, my hypervisor, and backup vendors, so for me, all the puzzle pieces simply fit and work smoothly."
"The user interface for this application is amazing."
"We like their high availability. It reduces the downtime for our entire organization's environment."
"The most valuable feature is the reliable storage replication, which enables me to create a robust infrastructure to run our business."
"The initial setup was very easy as I had the SimpliVity engineers work with our managed services."
"It comes all in one box."
"We like the backup feature, which is inbuilt."
"The most valuable feature for us is its integration, as it provides an entire solution in a single box."
"Dedupe, compression, and replication of primary and secondary data, locally and remotely."
"The ease of use on the backup and DR and replication side of things is good. It can be done by a VMware admin with no additional training."
"Offsite backup, replication, and duplication of data are important for our plant environment since we are hard on our equipment."
"Software upgrades and scalability can be done during normal business hours with no downtime."
"In terms of helping us with storage persistence across private and hybrid clouds, we do store data internally and in Azure. It has allowed us to consolidate a number of workloads, across our old NetApp and a number of our older storage arrays, into a single unit and have that unit also working with Azure."
"It is highly scalable. Their support is also extremely good."
"The ease of deployment is a positive feature that allows us to scale easily."
"The most valuable feature is the software design storage that really provided a faster, agile, easier to scale up and out storage path."
"It allows me to move a VM set and require extra performance. I can easily move them onto it and have it just run."
"Our goal with NetApp HCI is to have no single point of failure."
"It has reduced our hypervisor footprint by around 20%."
"The most valuable feature is the convergence."
"I would like to see an extensive set of cmdlets that could allow for easier automation as well as status management."
"The software could benefit from more tooling to help with initial deployment."
"The documentation can be better for the free tier."
"We ran into an issue with alerts."
"The only point they should improve is the amount of documentation available for the user, especially in the first preliminary phase in which we were testing the product on our own."
"It would be helpful to have a little more insight into what kind of performance the VSAN cluster is utilizing; something that would be more proactive on our side, versus their ProActive Support."
"The platform needs to improve user management and the web console."
"A central management console may be nice to see all nodes."
"Scalability is something that needs to be improved because if you need more storage then you have to add more nodes."
"The solution could have an optimization site."
"Not being able to apply ESXi patches as needed has always been a concern, but it has not become a big issue."
"Let us populate the entire node; right now, there are 24 slots in a server and you're only allowed to populate 14."
"Its price can be improved. Customers always look for better prices. It is more expensive as compared to other products available in the market."
"There is a file size limitation when you want to do an individual file restore, but they might have resolved this in newer versions. As I'm taking backups at the VM server level, I can restore a file from any one of those without standing up the VM, and I can restore it to any mounted VM that I want. The problem is that there is a file size limitation. It becomes problematic when I'm trying to restore. When I want to restore a backup of a SQL database, my backups are considerably larger than 10 gigs. So, the only way to restore that backup file is to mount the entire VM somewhere and then copy it, which doesn't take long at all."
"I'm not a technical guy, and I am pretty much okay with the way it is, but it would help if it was closest to Nutanix in Gartner's Magic Quadrants. Nutanix very often beats us. Nutanix provides Acropolis for free. It probably would be great if we have a virtualization layer. It is something that might be lacking in our solution. We depend on VMware, and it is very expensive. It is lacking the software that allows us to install it with HPE and not depend on a third party."
"While it has been a while since HPE acquired SimpliVity, there is a lack of understanding/awareness about the product. In short, it took me time to actually make them understand they had a product named SimpliVity, which as you can imagine does not instill a great deal of confidence."
"I'm not a fan of how they don't log you out properly from some of their web tools for management."
"I would like to see a better upgrade process, like the one that ONTAP has."
"My biggest pain point is the installation part. I would like to see the appliance itself remove the entire switch that goes behind it and figure out how to do all the cluster interconnects within the box itself."
"There have been some drive type of issues where we have to apply a new code level. Storage nodes kick certain drives until they act as though they have failed when really they haven't. You just have to reinsert them, then they go on about their happy way. It's sort of a bug."
"The administration side of it needs to be improved. We expect an easier interface and a single upgrade for updating the infrastructure."
"At the moment, I am not looking for new features. Quality of Service (QoS) and capacity efficiency are the two things that I want to resolve in my customer's environment. QoS improves the performance of each tenancy, and with capacity efficiency, the customer can achieve more capacity as compared to the normal capacity."
"If you want to have a really dense data center then it's hard to have a big chunk of cabling going through everything."
"In the next version I would like to see bigger GPU types and insurance for including transparency."
