Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

Offers near-real-time replication for data consistency and continuously introducing new features through upgrades
There are various advantages. First of all, easy to deploy. The only difficult part is the cost factor, licensing. In other ways, the implementation is very, very important. Like, we have not encountered any major challenges with replication. We were able to achieve near-real-time replication. Also, with the switchover failover, we were not getting any technical issues. It's a pretty stable product. Once you configure it, it goes through the rollback, and then Data Guard introduces this snapshot thing. So once the restoration happens, we can go back to the original thing, and we make that a standard. It's a pretty decent and key function for Oracle. So, enterprise organizations go for Oracle only for features like these.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We use the latest feature in Altaro called CDP (Continuous Data Protection) to back up our VMs as often as every five minutes. It allows us to make sure no data is accidentally deleted or overwritten."
"I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy."
"All of the features are fantastic and also the management from Microsoft dealing with multiple machines is great. The whole package is excellent for me."
"The most valuable feature of Altaro VM Backup is its ability to backup and restore various types of data, including Active Directory, application servers, and SQL Server databases."
"The ability to test the backups without having to manually mount the VHDs after restore allows us to check the integrity of the backups."
"I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy."
"The initial setup was simple and easy. Anyone without prior experience can install, configure, and use it."
"VM backup and the item level recovery are the most valuable features."
"We use Data Guard for online replication from data center, to data center for high availability. This is the most important feature."
"It is a top-notch product, super stable, making it our go-to for internal operations."
"We chose this solution for the availability of the databases. We can't afford Oracle Grid, this is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive."
"Oracle Data Guard is a free solution. When you apply for Enterprise Manager, it comes for free with the solution."
"The most valuable features are the backup and restore. With this in place along with the clustering, the database is safe from hacking, hardware failure, power failures, and system crashes."
"The most valuable feature is the flashback standby, which allows us to test without scrapping the database."
"If you have a problem with your primary site and can't access your primary database, you can continue working with the database that you have as standby on the other site, by changing its role to primary."
"We have found the replication feature the most useful. We use this feature the most. The ability to recover a database with less effort and the use of Oracle Data Guard Broker to administer the complete environment are also very useful features."

Cons

"The solution needs multi-platform support as it is currently only available for VMware and Hyper-V."
"It would be nice to be able to recover the items to their original location."
"If you look into the performance of a virtual machine and you look to the performance of the physical machine, the correlation between these is totally unclear."
"It would be nice to see a feature that backs up the host so that, in case of a server failure, an entire server could be restored all at once."
"The initial set up was complex, and I was not able to do the set up myself."
"The solution needs multi-platform support as it is currently only available for VMware and Hyper-V. It also lacks support for physical servers and workstations."
"Replication is not fast, the GUI could be more user-friendly, and technical support is lacking in Iran."
"Stability."
"For every standby server you have, you must pay a licensing fee, which is the main disadvantage."
"Oracle could be improved by the ability to manage it on the cloud. This on-premises version is secure and reliable, but I'm sure that they will soon provide a cloud solution that will be even better. In one to two years, we will probably move to the cloud—we have already moved to the cloud with Microsoft Exchange, but our databases are still on-premises. I would prefer managing a cloud version of Oracle."
"Sometimes, the technical support team takes time to respond."
"They may need to include the monitoring and the alerting part in Data Guard."
"The initial setup is complex."
"It is a very useful administrative IT tool. It saves on costs."
"A significant improvement for Oracle Data Guard would be enabling the disaster recovery site to handle read and write operations, not just data storage."
"For Italian medium-sized companies, the main challenge lies in the cost associated with licenses."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"VMware is a little pricey, but it is a good solution and priced similar to other products."
"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
"The pricing is okay,"
"By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
"Its yearly maintenance fee is fairly high for me to renew for upgrades and support."
"It is not a cheap product, but if you look at the price, features, availability, scalability, and maturity, it is a very good product."
"This is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive than Oracle Grid."
"The cost is expensive."
"The licensing cost is significantly high."
"The pricing is on the higher side."
"The cost of the Oracle license will depend on the negotiations with Oracle."
"If you want to have everything automated and done smoothly, you have to add additional licenses."
"Oracle Data Guard is a feature available only in Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, and is available for extra cost."
