We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It does a little bit better than some of the other products health-wise and updates-wise. It is really clear that a firewall is getting the signature updates in this timeframe. In some of the other products, usually, you have to go a couple of screens in to see that, but not so much in this product.""I like the tool's controller facility.""I am very comfortable with it, including it's reporting on threats and through its activities.""The role-based access controls give us granular control over what features to present to a customer, and the integration into FortiAnalyzer is the most valuable feature.""I like the product's asset management which gives clear hardware details.""From a scalability perspective, I found the solution to be completely fine...The solution's technical support is absolutely fine.""The firewall and site-blocking features are valuable.""The most valuable feature of this solution is application control."

"The most valuable feature is the way that it plugs into our monitoring systems, and Infoblox and Puppet.""It's extremely convenient to be able to spin something up and be able to work on other things, because it's already done it, making my workload lighter.""We had a lot of config drift before, and this really helps us keep it on track. Speed to provision is probably our biggest, significant gain.""Our speed of provisioning has improved. We used to build systems manually, which would take four hours or a day. Nowadays we're able to spin something up off a template... and it takes about 20 minutes.""To manage when VM's aren't being used, we have it set up so that it will auto-destroy them after a certain amount of time, obviously with permission from the user who owns it.""It is mostly for our tech support to test new versions, find bugs, and troubleshoot what is happening at customer sites.""The most valuable feature is the consistency it delivers, at the end of the day. We know that we have consistent images based off consistent Blueprints, check-pointed or QA'ed in a consistent manner.""vRealize automation stability is pretty good. They are always fixing bugs. The product team is doing a great job of addressing any issues that we might have."

Cons
"So if it's more than a thousand, there could be some scalability issues. It becomes more complex as you go.""There can be defects in Fortinet FortiPortal when functioning at high temperatures.""It's useful for us but if it had more educational reporting, it would good. It's not necessarily lacking but it's an area that could get better.""The solution is more expensive than other products.""Fortinet FortiPortal could improve by providing a learning portal and better security.""If you are a very small company or a person on your own, it's harder to get any response from technical support.""I find their logging a little bit trickier to manage. The logging of events is broken up into a lot of different categories. Instead of breaking up my logs into several different places, I personally like to have all the events in one spot and then filter them down. In particular, I find that troubleshooting on Fortinet takes a little bit longer just because of those functional breakups in the logs.""The tool should provide a 10-15 days extension for customers when their license expires."

More Fortinet FortiPortal Cons →

"in general, it took us a long time to get it off the ground. We had a lot of issues upfront and we determined that we just needed to scrap it. I think we scrapped it two or three times before we actually got it built the way we wanted, and we're still not where we need to be. We have had downtime. There have been some issues, but we're also two iterations behind on version.""Deploying and configuring the solution takes a lot of time.""VMware Aria Automation could improve reporting of the policies. They are difficult to customize. We have many policies but they are not able to be modified to what we want.""We are migrating from vRA version 7 to 8, but the migration is really hectic and time-consuming. There are no straightforward paths to migrate. We are doing an entirely new deployment to go to vRA version 8.0, then somehow get all of the VMs to vRA 8.0. Therefore, it would have been great if VMware had some solutions to upgrade from vRA 7 to 8 seamlessly. This includes the management of all the objects or VMs from the older version. Unfortunately, it is not there.""For the administrator, it can be a little challenging. For the administrator, there are a lot of moving parts. It is fine once you figure out where the knobs are you need to twiddle, but it can be a challenge to get it up and running.""It's not cheap.""VMware needs to make it to where it is not as custom. Right now, you spend a lot of time making the services work. In order to get it up and running initially, that takes time.""There is an area of improvement. For example, you are migrating from a customer's existing data center to a new target data center. To facilitate this transition, you'll initially need to evaluate the customer's aging hardware hosting VMware, which is nearing the end of its operational life. The customer expresses the intention to upgrade to a newer version, necessitating an overhaul of everything in the new data center. As a Systems Integrator (SI), consultant, or architect, your recommendation would be to acquire the latest hardware with a specified configuration and then install VMware on top of it. However, there's a crucial aspect related to the infrastructure requirements for VMware to run seamlessly on that hardware. If there's an opportunity to potentially reduce these infrastructure prerequisites, it would be highly beneficial."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I am satisfied with the pricing for this solution."
  • "Fortinet FortiPortal is relatively expensive, but being an industry-leading firewall, it does come with a cost."
  • "The price of the solution is reasonable."
  • "On average, it tends to be cheaper than other enterprise solutions."
  • "Fortinet FortiPortal is not expensive."
  • "Fortinet FortiPortal is expensive in Pakistan."
  • "The licensing costs attached to the solution make it an expensive product."
  • "The solution is quite expensive."

  • "From the customer perspective, the value was worth it."
  • "I'm very interested in the integration with Puppet. However, my organization doesn't have the funding for something like Puppet right now. If VMware would integrate that feature set (Puppet) into vRA. That would be very awesome."
  • "Better pricing is always handy, but I feel it's at the right price point."
  • "We have seen significant ROI. We used to have physical servers, it took 90 days to get a server, order it, buy it, and get it in. We have it down to 10 minutes, building a server with virtualization, and now that's too slow. So, we let the customer do it at their speed. Therefore, it is pretty much up in a couple of minutes and they have a server."
  • "The solution has helped to increase infrastructure, agility, speed, and provisioning in the time to market."
  • "There is confusion between licensing levels. There are three different licensed versions of vRealize Automation, and there are different things which can happen in each of them."
  • "vRealize automation really should be a front door to the whole VMware suite of products."
  • "As far as value is concerned, it has been essential to our environment. We have been able to deploy VMs quickly and the developers have their own sandbox, so they can spin up and destroy VMs at their own will."
