Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

Backup services have improved security and saved time for cloud workloads in test environments
Regarding security or pricing, our experience is definitely limited, but I can say that support is good. I think the pricing could be better, or they could improve support, automations, or customizations. Dell PowerProtect Backup Services can be improved, and I want it to be even easier to manage, to secure the workload, and to restore easily. The areas for improvement with Dell PowerProtect Backup Services include that it is a cloud solution and a SaaS solution for scheduling the tasks to protect workloads. It is not too easy; it is a little closed, as Dell PowerProtect Backup Services does not allow us to customize the schedule in backup tasks, which only has options for daily or twice a day. More options to schedule backup tasks would be better.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is very stable."
"The backup is the solution's most valuable feature; it's very reliable."
"Graphically, it's very user interactive; it's got a very nice interface."
"Avamar evaluates the data that's already backed up, and only the chain blocks can be transferred via the network, so there won't be any heavy network traffic and the time it takes to backup is quick and within the window."
"I think the brand is very good. Support is also very nice for end users and integration with EMC products for businesses."
"The stability of Dell EMC Avamar is very good."
"We sell Avamar with Data Domain, Data Domain and Avamar work really well together and their compression ratios are very high compared to Veeam, Commvault, and all the other backup software on the market."
"Technical support for this solution was great."
"The handiest feature of Dell PowerProtect Backup Services is that it syncs up our backups to other locations—we don't have to worry about our backups not syncing to other locations, and it monitors and reports to us if there are any issues."
"Some of the returns on investment I see with this product are security and saving time."

Cons

"The technical support from Dell is very poor, especially in terms of response time."
"It's really a nightmare if you want to tape out with Avamar."
"The product does not scale. If a company needs something that can scale, they need something else."
"Reporting in Dell Avamar needs improvement. The current reporting tool is very basic, and you have to dig deep into each function to get the information you need. For example, getting the status of failed and succeeded backups is very difficult in Avamar compared to Veeam. As for additional functionality, I would suggest improving WAN optimization. It's very important for getting offline or off-site backups. It should also include a tool to check for ransomware which would be beneficial. If a backup is vulnerable to ransomware, there should be a way to detect it, like using ARR rules to ensure your backup is ransomware-free. I haven't had any experience integrating Dell Avamar with AI solutions. It’s also a good point that Avamar doesn't offer such integrations, which is an area where Dell could improve."
"The system was sold on the premise that it was going to reduce man-hours and not require having to work with tape. I don't think it was a cost saving."
"The performance is a big issue for us and maybe the support service."
"Dell EMC Avamar is hard to manage because of the support. It’s very difficult to get support."
"Adding new nodes is an extremely difficult task. Took me nearly 28 hours for node addition and data rebalance."
"I think the pricing could be better, or they could improve support, automations, or customizations."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the pricing a seven out of ten because it is expensive."
"Dell Avamar, including its virtual add-ons and cloud-based offerings, is cheaper than other solutions, but in the end, the price still depends on your use case. Price-wise, I'm rating Dell Avamar as six out of ten."
"This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
"Licensing fees are paid annually."
"It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
"It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
"The cost of the solution is very expensive."
"It might not be beneficial to smaller businesses due to its high cost."
