Masking sensitive test data has improved compliance and now enables safe, realistic debugging
The best features DataMasque offers that stand out to me are the flexibility to create rule sets and mask UUIDs, which have been really beneficial. Additionally, their customer service and technical support have been very helpful in getting this set up. The flexibility in creating rule sets has helped my team specifically because we have lots of dependencies on different databases and different database types. We have an RDS instance and an OpenSearch instance. Having those rule sets really allowed us to connect data between the two because the same data can be across multiple datasets. Creating these rules enabled us to not think too much about which ones need to be unique or which ones need to be the same across different tables. Whenever we run into issues or questions, we are able to talk to the DataMasque team, and they give us a reasonable technical response within a good timeframe that allows us to solve our issues pretty quickly. We have not had huge delays or blockers because of the communication between us and DataMasque. I appreciate the consistency to continue to improve the application, and there are new features coming out this year that will be tools we use. DataMasque is doing a great job of adding new features, and we will definitely be using them in the future. DataMasque has positively impacted our organization by already showing visible benefits in security and reduced risks for compliance, even though we are still in the process of setting up production and using it to the full extent. It will allow our developers to troubleshoot issues easily without the risk of viewing PHI or anything similar. We are seeing the benefits already of that, but we still need to complete the full integration and incorporate it into our workflows to see the full benefits, which we are currently in the process of. So far, it has been really good. By just masking production data, we can go into this masked database set to understand edge cases and issues as they come up from support without the developers having to look at any production data. They can go into this masked dataset and see the problem firsthand, something we would not have caught with our dev dataset because it is such a smaller amount of data, whereas production has a vast amount of data that we can look through.

Automated data discovery has streamlined management while configuration remains complex
Compared to Big-ID, Microsoft Purview Data Governance looks complicated to me. I do not feel it has a good user-level UI. The interface feels a little complicated compared to Big-ID. I did not appreciate the configuration part. It felt complex, whereas when I went for a Big-ID demo, the interface looked better and was easier to understand for any user.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We can now have a staging environment very much like a production environment, which improves our testing and product quality."
"DataMasque has positively impacted our organization by already showing visible benefits in security and reduced risks for compliance, even though we are still in the process of setting up production and using it to the full extent."
"DataMasque has positively impacted our organization by absolutely allowing us to more rigorously test our products within a safe environment without leaking personally identifiable information."
"Being able to generate the masking rules directly from the tool based on what it finds during the data discovery helps ensure that all sensitive fields are identified and masked."
"Purview helped us automate and control our data without having to rely on people to manually tag documents with specific retention periods."
"I like Purview's data discovery features. It automatically scans and identifies all the fields. In the last project, the customer required us to have some of the codes we specified in this, and we had to structure the codes in a specific way. We can define the structure."
"From my experience and customer feedback, one of the most valuable features of Microsoft Purview is ease of use, especially for content hosted within Microsoft 365 and Azure. I also like that the pricing model for the solution is reasonable."
"Their data labeling or data classification is particularly valuable because we want to categorize all of our data into confidential, public, or internal."
"It gives you the opportunity to know your data and apply policies around it. If those policies are flouted, you can always track what's happening. You have options such as alerting the person who is committing that action, or you can take automatic action by blocking, for example, an email that is been sent externally. It's very useful."
"The time to onboard is pretty short."
"Microsoft Purview's primary benefit lies in safeguarding sensitive and confidential data, thereby mitigating the risk of internal data exfiltration."
"The availability of pre-designed policies tailored to specific geolocations and customer requirements is a valuable feature."

Cons

"UUID generation could be improved."
"I think it would be great if the user experience was upgraded because it can be quite technical at times."
"One drawback of Microsoft Purview, though it's beneficial and easy to use, is that when you start plugging in connectors for third-party sources when setting the solution up for data collection, it becomes a bit more tricky."
"One area for improvement is better documentation on what is working and what is not, as well as what features are allowed depending on your licensing model. It's essential to know if a feature isn't working due to missing licenses."
"One area for improvement is the detection of data types. This is really important. It has some of that functionality, but I consider it very limited. Maybe they can add some custom programming or machine learning could be particularly useful for the detection of the nature of the data."
"Non-Microsoft use cases are not very high. It's limited for now."
"There are differences when looking at an incident in the M365 portal versus Purview, and the main one is the advanced hunting. In the M365 portal, you can write KQL queries and fetch data. If that was available in Purview, it would be very good."
"There should be more clarity about the costing, particularly how the cost is calculated, especially when utilizing health reports and quality features."
"Purview's data loss prevention for macOS endpoints has some limitations, and the end-user experience of recovering from a failure is lacking."
"While Purview's data connector platform can ingest information from non-Microsoft data sources, it is slow to do so and the information may become outdated."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Currently, the licensing differs for the governance side compared to the risk and compliance side."
"Price-wise, I think it's very generous and accessible to not just enterprises but small to medium-sized companies as well. I think it's very fair in terms of how they break apart the storage and the actual computing, and that makes it very accessible. So, that is a very big plus for Purview."
"Some people find the tier licensing system complicated, but it offers a lot of value for money if we use the features."
"The solution is extremely affordable for the K-12 space."
"While Purview's standard pricing might not be accessible to most small businesses, we were fortunate to benefit from the educational pricing which made it a financially viable option for our needs."
"Microsoft Purview is priced in the middle. It isn't the cheapest, but it isn't the most expensive. It's affordable compared to other public cloud services."
"The pricing is reasonable because it's part of the 365 E3 or E5 license you buy."
"The pricing depends on the client's requirements and the number of applications."
