Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Its integration is most valuable because you can integrate it with various service providers such as AWS, .Net, etc.""The most valuable aspect is for us to have everything in one place.""APM and tracing are super useful.""The most valuable feature I have found is the elastic container service.""Datadog has given us near-live visibility across our entire cloud platform.""The many dozens of integrations that the solution brings out of the box are excellent.""Since we integrated Datadog, we have had increased confidence in the quality of our service, and we had an easier time increasing our delivery velocity.""I like that you can build out a dashboard pretty quickly. There are some things that come out of the box that you don't really need to do, which is great because they're default settings."

"The solution is great for virtualization and preparing the infrastructure in Tanzu to test products. It's very fast and has good visibility.""For us, the ease of deployment in combination with TMZ was the most important part because we don't have to manually deploy a complex monitoring solution. We can more or less do that with the click of a button, and we are not dependent on the developers to provide us with all the necessary features and functions to make that work. We can just deploy it on a workload cluster and monitor at least a good part of the workload. If we want to go into detail, we clearly need to make changes, but for a good part of application monitoring, it gives us good insights.""Tanzu itself, integrated with multiple solutions, bestows support and security upon a container platform, especially when it comes to managing open-source container platforms such as Kubernetes."

Cons
"Geo-data is also something very critical that we hope to see in the future.""When it comes to storing the logs with Datadog, I'm not sure why it costs so much to store gigabytes or terabytes of information when it's a fraction of the cost to do so myself.""One thing we have run into is that it is so easy to add monitoring that we turn on things without really understanding the costs.""The ease of implementation needs improvement.""Datadog could be improved if it could detect other software in a container or server.""It can be overwhelming for new people as it has a lot of features.""If there were a more cost-effective manner of deploying the tool, we'd be more likely to adopt it more widely.""When the logs are too big, and Datadog splits them, the JSON format breaks and it is not so useful for us."

More Datadog Cons →

"Its billing model is consumption-based. I understand the consumption-based model, but it is not necessarily easy to estimate and guess how many points or how much we are going to consume on a specific application up until we get to that point. So, for us, it would be helpful to have more insights or predictability into what we can expect from a cost perspective if we are starting to use specific features. This can potentially also drive our consumption a bit more.""The documentation and integration with Kubernetes could be improved.""The main problem I have is that the license cost is very high."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "My advice is to really keep an eye on your overage costs, as they can spiral really fast."
  • "If you do your homework, you'll find that if you're really concerned with cost, it's good."
  • "It has a module-based pricing model."
  • "I am not satisfied with its licensing. Its payment is based on the exported data, and there was an explosion of the data for three or four weeks. My customer was not alerted, and there was no way for them to see that there has been an explosion of data. They got a big invoice for one or two months. The pricing model of Datadog is based on the data. The customer was quite surprised about not being alerted about this explosion of data. They should provide some kind of alert when there is an increase in usage."
  • "Datadog does not provide any free plans to use the solution. When I start with a proof of concept it would be sensible to have a free plan to test the tool and check whether it fits the requirements of the project. Before the production stage, it is always good to have a free plan with some limited features, number of requests, or logs."
  • "They prefer monthly subscriptions."
  • "Our licensing fees are paid on a monthly basis."
  • "Sometimes it's very hard to project how much it will cost for the monthly subscription for the next month when you add certain features. Having better visibility of the cost would give a better experience."
  • More Datadog Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I don't have the details. In our case, there is a mixture in place. We have production usage, and we are also doing training for VMware. So, we also have a training instance. It is worth the money you would spend on it. That's because if you were to build all of this yourself by using some of the open source tools, then you would need a lot of time."
  • "The licensing costs are very high, particularly when you consider that we have to purchase a level 1 license for every integration, such as the load balancer, HAProxy, and the MSSP. And if you want to use vSAN, that's another license. Then, of course, Tanzu Observability has its own separate license."
  • "I would rate the pricing as three out of five."

    Overview

Datadog is a cloud monitoring solution that is designed to assist administrators, IT teams, and other members of an organization who are charged with keeping a close eye on their networks. Administrators can use Datadog to set real-time alerts and schedule automated report generation. They can deal with issues as they arise and keep up to date with the overall health of their network while still being able to focus on other tasks. Users can also track the historical performance of their networks and ensure that they operate at the highest possible level.

    Datadog Benefits

Some of the ways that organizations can benefit by deploying Datadog include:

    • Gain an integrated view of the services and programs that IT teams are employing across their networks. Users can view and monitor all of the disparate programs that they have running across their networks with this one solution. They can track these programs across the entirety of the data’s life cycle.
    • Analyze and utilize massive amounts of data in real time. Datadog’s dashboards gather data in real time. Administrators can utilize their network’s data the minute that it becomes relevant to them. Decisions can be made based on the most current information available.
    • Keep your cloud network secured against digital threats. Datadog enables users to create alerts that will notify the minute that threats arise. IT teams and administrators can rapidly address any issue that comes up and prevent any existing problem from growing worse.
    • Easily get it up and running. Users can set up Datadog, configure it, and employ API integrations to connect it to external solutions with ease.

    Datadog Features

    • Customizable and prefabricated monitoring dashboards. Administrators are supplied with two different types of dashboards that they can choose from when they are setting up Datadog. They can customize the dashboards to fit any specialized monitoring need. Additionally, users can choose to use prefabricated dashboards that come with the solution.
    • Disaster recovery feature. Datadog has a built-in feature that enables organizations to continue functioning if some disaster strikes their network. If the network suffers damage, Datadog can restore lost data and infrastructure. Should a digital threat do damage to the network, Datadog ensures that the damage is not irreparable.
    • Vulnerability scanning tool. Users can keep ahead of threats to their networks by employing Datadog’s vulnerability scanning feature. This tool scans the entirety of a user’s network and warns them if a vulnerability is detected. Users can then move to patch these holes in their security before the threat to their network can escalate.

    Reviews from Real Users

Datadog is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. It can offer organizations many advantages. Two major advantages are the dashboards that users can create and the monitoring capability that it gives system administrators.

A senior manager in charge of site reliability engineering at Extra Space Storage writes, “The dashboards we created are core indicators of the health of our system, and it is one of the most reliable sources we have turned to, especially as we have seen APM metrics impacted several times lately. We can usually rely on logs to tell us what the apps are doing.”

Housecall Pro’s senior director of DevOps writes, “We value the monitoring capability since it allows us to be pushed alerts, rather than having to observe graphs continually.

VMware Tanzu Observability is a high-performance streaming analytics platform. It enables observability for metrics, counters, histograms, and traces/spans. Because it scales to very large data ingestion rates and query loads, the product is unique in its field. You can collect data from a variety of services and sources across your entire application stack, as well as examine details for earlier ingested data. After sending your data to your Wavefront instance, you may examine your data on custom dashboards, receive alerts on problem values, and do anomaly detection and forecasting.

VMware Tanzu Observability can support over 200 integrations, including cloud providers, DevOps tools, big data, and others. You can utilize the platform’s sophisticated Graphical User Interface to connect with the Wavefront service, which includes several pre-built dashboards, charts, and alerts. SDKs, the Wavefront REST API, and CLIs are also accessible on our Github website. Additionally, there are tight integrations with Spring Boot, Kubernetes, and Tanzu Mission Control.

    VMware Tanzu Observability Features

VMware Tanzu Observability has many valuable key features. Some of the most useful ones include:

    • Analytics: Advanced query language helps you save time and money.
    • API: API with a lot of flexibility for effective alerting and visualization.
    • Architecture: Enterprise-scale performance in real time.
    • Dashboards and charts: Use dashboards and charts to visualize the data. Filters and functions can help you find exactly what you're looking for. Use aggregation functions like sum() or average to combine multiple time series. Use dashboard variables to adjust the focus of a dashboard or combine functions to show or hide some of the information. A variable, for example, could be used to display the production or development environment. Choose from a variety of chart types (line plot, point plot, table, etc.)
    • Alerts: You can build alerts directly from charts and customize them to detect problems. The solution will send you alert notifications with details and a chart graphic if you've set up an alert with customized information.
    • Queries: You can extract exactly the information you need using the Wavefront query language (WQL). You can personalize your charts with filters and functions so that the signal stands out among the noise.
    • Distributed Tracing tool: Use Distributed Tracing to interact with a service map, inspect traces and spans, and drill down into problematic areas.
    • Various setup methods:

      • Cloud: Perform the bare minimum of configuration to allow the Wavefront service to access data in your cloud environment. As a result, data from cloud services can be directly ingested.

      • Integrations: VMware Tanzu Observability supports more than 200 integrations with different data sources. You just need to change a single configuration file and you're ready to go.

      • Start from where you are: If your environment already has a metrics infrastructure, you can pre-process the data to match the Wavefront Data Format and transmit it to the Wavefront proxy directly.

      • Direct Ingestion: Direct ingestion is the best option in some circumstances.
      • Histograms: Wavefront histograms may be the best answer for high-velocity measures.
      • App monitoring with distributed tracing: For traces, the product supports Jaeger and Zipkin, as well as any OpenTracing-instrumented applications. You can also use one of our SDKs to transmit custom traces. The Application Map GUI makes it simple to explore trace data, RED metrics, and other metrics.
