Enhanced device administration hindered by complex deployment and security limitations
Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) needs to improve the profiling preauthentication. They are very poor in asset classification and should focus on improving the preauthentication profiling, especially for NAC use cases. This will give them a roadmap for software-defined access (SDA) use cases and network segmentation. Threat detection capabilities are very weak. Additionally, the product is vulnerable and has many bugs.

Enables us to sell products which creates significant revenue but their disaster recovery needs improvement
The Registration/Login Management and Single Sign On tools are extremely valuable for us. They have allowed us to migrate a very complex portion of our architecture to a SaaS service that requires minimal maintenance We can now invest more of our resources into our core business instead of into…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"For my use cases, the in-depth troubleshooting into why a client can't connect or why they failed, is very valuable. I can go back to someone and say, 'Hey, it's not my network. It's their certificates or user error,' or something else."
"With NAC, the profiling feature is valuable. We're able to see what we have out there in the network and dynamically assign policies to it. We can then use that to enforce TrustSec policy or anything else with NAC."
"The core point is that Cisco ISE is the same globally compared to FortiAuthenticator. Whether I deploy in China, the US, South Africa, or wherever, I'm can get all the capabilities. It allows me to directly integrate with 365, and from a communications point of view, that is a good capability."
"There is good integration with third-party systems like antivirus patch management, MDM."
"Cisco ISE provides authentication for various applications. It can integrate with other applications to manage access, including Privileged Access Management for those applications. For a comprehensive environment, Cisco ISE should be able to integrate and provide asset management for an IT organization or any organization."
"Cisco ISE is a powerful solution. It gives us the ability to control who's accessing our network, and Cisco has made it very easy."
"It is a good product for what it does...So, it is one of the most critical systems that we have."
"The implementation is very simple."
"SAP CDC is very easy to use and the best part about this tool is its documentation."

Cons

"The web UI should be made similar to the one in DNAC."
"The learning curve is steep and the initial setup is complex."
"Difficult to figure out the protocols and nodes in order to implement correctly."
"We do tend to run into a lot of issues with ISE when it comes to bugs."
"In the next release, I would want to see this kind of solution in the cloud as opposed to on prem because when enhancements are made to the software, if it's in the cloud, it's overnight. I mean you're not going to have to respin the servers that the license sits on, it's all microservices kinds of things in the cloud. That would be my recommendation. If I'm a customer, that's what I'm looking at - for cloud based software subscriptions."
"Automation [is an area for improvement]. It seems like everywhere I look, automation is super important. Automation and integrations. That's the area it could be improved..."
"Cisco ISE has numerous features that are impractical, and I won't utilize them since they require payment."
"Sometimes, there are instances when Cisco ISE simply fails to function without any apparent reason, and regardless of the investigation we undertake, the logs indicate that everything is functioning properly, making it somewhat inexplicable."
"I have struggled to give different access to different users in the same application."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Previously, Cisco ISE had a perpetual licensing model, but now they have shifted to a subscription-based licensing system."
"The pricing is fair for what it does."
"I am not aware of the current price for Cisco ISE, but considering it is a Cisco product, it is likely to be quite high."
"I get very good pricing from Cisco, so I don't have a problem with that. I also don't have a problem with licensing because we get enterprise or global licensing."
"The pricing is complicated."
"The SMARTnet technical support is available at an additional cost."
"The pricing is good. The last time we purchased four new appliances the price was doable for any organization of our size."
"The recent changes in the licensing model have caused some issues with the team."
