Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

We are using SoftExpert BPM for document management, workflow, and forms The solution has helped us have access to documents and processes, such as analytics and forms. The most valuable feature of SoftExpert BPM is its ease of use. The form in SoftExpert BPM should improve. I have been using…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The documentation and all that they have done is just splendid."
"The modeler is useful for creating the flow. The way to access the data through their REST API is also valuable. This is what we're using right now."
"The UI is very user-friendly compared to other products. The native, vanilla UI is very interesting and intuitive to use. It's user-friendly when it comes to modernizing a business process."
"I can use any other tools to create services and the UI, and then use them together with the Camunda BPMN engine."
"It is quite easy to build a simple process without any knowledge of programming."
"It has an open BPM"
"They keep on coming up with different features, which is helping us a lot."
"Overall, it's very flexible and nimble."
"We promote the use of this product because it's integrated and has a very nicely designed program, simplifying our workflow and the workflow of our clients, which saves time and money for everyone while making us more productive."
"A complete project management suite in one integrated package."

Cons

"Like all BPM tools, they're very bad with proprietary UIs. In general, anyone who uses BPM tools should not expect to use their proprietary UI."
"While it's very scalable, it would be great if auto-scaling capabilities were added to it... one area that really could help out would be to have dynamic resizing of the cluster. Right now, you have to do capacity planning."
"When addressing a complex and extensive process, the domain it belongs to, be it banking, healthcare, or HR, requires widespread access."
"Without a proper frontend, the business cannot effectively use the platform."
"Camunda needs to improve its user interface for low-code development and provide more user interface options beyond the basic workflow."
"Camunda doesn't have a strong forms designer."
"The development team had a lot of issues at the start. Guaranteeing the execution times that it will work to is difficult."
"I think that Camunda can try to do better when it comes to solving the complexities of all the products in its software stack."
"I would like for them to incorporate artificial intelligence and be more intuitive."
"It could do more to use all the data it collects to intelligently manage the user experience."
"The form in SoftExpert BPM should improve."
"I would like for them to incorporate artificial intelligence and be more intuitive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its price is decent. Everything is included in the license. The Community version is also good to start with. We are using the Community version."
"We are using the paid edition because there is no separate support and service license yet. We are yet to find a suitable licensing model for Camunda because we only use the engine, and we have implemented our solution around Camunda Cloud. So, we are mainly interested in the support and service, and that's what we mainly use in the paid edition."
"The product's price depends on the number of processes that need to be automated or where the orchestration part needs to be used. The product is affordable for medium and large enterprises."
"Licensing costs are anywhere from $80,000 to $100,000 USD per year."
"There is a bit of scope for improvement in how the licensing and pricing are done. They are based on the number of processing instances you execute on the cluster... but on the self-hosted mode, the pricing model should be customized."
"I use the open-source free version."
"Cheaper licensing and resources than competitors"
"The open-source version of the product is free to use."
"The price of SoftExpert BPM is not expensive."
