Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"One reason we selected Camunda or Cloud/DB is that it comes with the support of the BPMN notation, which helps to define processes in a standard manner. Another reason was that Camunda Cloud, as the name says, is designed for a new cloud era."
"The integration with almost any language, product, and even human tasks, is valuable. It's very seamless to integrate into existing systems. It doesn't require you to rewrite a lot of your existing system. That's where it really stands out."
"I am happy with Camunda BPM."
"The speed and execution of DMN was a big selling point for us. It's very good at conducting business processes that are easily modeled and presented in a way that's easy to understand."
"It is quite easy to build a simple process without any knowledge of programming."
"The most valuable feature is that, with a visual system, you can try to have a process client before beginning the programming for the application."
"I can use any other tools to create services and the UI, and then use them together with the Camunda BPMN engine."
"EC2 makes scaling horizontally incredibly easy, especially when working under the ECS service."
"We promote the use of this product because it's integrated and has a very nicely designed program, simplifying our workflow and the workflow of our clients, which saves time and money for everyone while making us more productive."
"The most valuable feature of SoftExpert BPM is its ease of use."
"A complete project management suite in one integrated package."

Cons

"The support definitely can be improved."
"Camunda needs to improve its user interface for low-code development and provide more user interface options beyond the basic workflow."
"They could provide more documentation regarding the integration of different programming languages."
"Camunda Platform's customer support could be improved because their response is quite slow."
"It is not difficult to change existing processes. The difficulty was in integration, for example, to call an external web API, and in the security capabilities, to use a vault for secrets. That was difficult."
"Process interfaces between diagrams could be improved."
"They have a migration plugin that can be used to migrate from one BPM to another BPM. It is in the beta stage since last year."
"The only drawback is the time that it takes to have a complete set of workflows implemented on the Camunda platform."
"It could do more to use all the data it collects to intelligently manage the user experience."
"I would like for them to incorporate artificial intelligence and be more intuitive."
"The form in SoftExpert BPM should improve."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Camunda is a cheaply priced product, making it one of its major USPs."
"I think Camunda BPM can improve their licensing costs. It isn't easy to find clients with Camunda BPM licenses mainly because it's quite expensive."
"The product's price depends on the number of processes that need to be automated or where the orchestration part needs to be used. The product is affordable for medium and large enterprises."
"We use the free version."
"We use a community version."
"We pay for the license of this solution annually."
"When compared with the proprietary products, the pricing costs are much less, even though it is an enterprise edition."
"The most attractive feature of the product is that it is open source."
"The price of SoftExpert BPM is not expensive."
