Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have been able to save costs using this solution compared to the product we used before."
"Having knowledge of the BPM and monitoring process has proven to be very beneficial, as I am currently engaged in documenting processes for Clientele."
"The visibility – the diagrams you create – and then being able to automate based on them are valuable features. It's easy to explain and comprehend, and the integration aspects are valuable."
"The architectural part of Camunda for workflow design is highly valuable, especially the Camunda Modeler, which allows quick process design and implementation."
"The most valuable feature is that, with a visual system, you can try to have a process client before beginning the programming for the application."
"Camunda serves as an automation library and provides lightweight deployment to the cloud."
"I think that the positives of Camunda Platform are that our customers can start with the free version. I think it is the most important."
"Camunda Platform has a very good interface for workflow and business process design."
"The most valuable feature of SoftExpert BPM is its ease of use."
"A complete project management suite in one integrated package."

Cons

"I would also like a very easy to use form builder."
"The GUI needs to be improved, with more configuration options."
"Collaborations and process documentation in Camunda Platform are areas with shortcomings that need improvement."
"As we experienced some difficulties in the beginning, deployment took almost a month."
"Camunda Platform's customer support could be improved because their response is quite slow."
"I have faced problems in bringing up the Cockpit in terms of GUI processes. I think that there is room for improvement in those areas."
"Camunda needs to improve its user interface for low-code development and provide more user interface options beyond the basic workflow."
"The support definitely can be improved. Apart from that, the language should be extendable to other platforms. If I want to write, I'll run a different platform, like Python code on top of it, or COBOL code on top of it, and it should support those languages."
"The form in SoftExpert BPM should improve."
"It could do more to use all the data it collects to intelligently manage the user experience."
