High-performance backup with fast recovery and robust encryption features
I use Gluster as a backup. In fact, my company has a product called xBackup, which is completely based on Gluster. It includes various tools and technologies for high-performance backup, including solid-state technologies and mechanical disks, among others. Additionally, I use various other…

Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature of the solution is the ease of installation it provides its users."
"Bareos offers encryption on the fly, compression on the fly, and a robust and stable configuration."
"AltaVault is very economical; you don't need big expertise to manage this product."
"Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored."
"It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it."
"Leverage the SE and the technical expertise within NetApp; they offer really great services, and they'll provide you with an honest approach to how to address your business problems."
"It's been very helpful for us in our environment and what we do."
"The jobs we have baseline into the AltaVault, it seems to be able to recover faster than the previous solution."
"Our restore window has been cut by 10 times, from having to pull back from tape - I'd definitely recommend it."
"The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications."

Cons

"The virtual machine backup is an area with shortcomings that need improvement."
"Improvement is needed in the graphical web administration tool."
"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have."
"More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out."
"We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are knowledgeable."
"More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out."
"I don't actually use the solution."
"My advice is to stick with ONTAP and ownCloud because NetApp AltaVault is going to die."
"It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture."
"NetApp's own competing products complicate things."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I use the open-source version of Bareos, which means I used the free version of the solution."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"The price is a bit high."
