Inexpensive, easy to configure, good support, and it is easy to scale up when needed
The most valuable feature is the interface, which is very nice to work with. Whether you're working on the appliance itself, or you're working on the cloud, it is basically the same interface. It got to the point where when we needed to recover a file, we didn't look at the backup solution anymore. Instead, we went right to the Datto Backupify. Using Backupify took our time to recover from probably four days to 20 minutes. With this device, you're capable of logging into the interface or through an IP address to access the data that is stored on it. Recovery can be just a matter of spinning up a virtual machine or doing a full bare metal recovery, replacing the entire hardware-based server.

Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Using Backupify took our time to recover from probably four days to 20 minutes."
"The most valuable features are the ease of use and the fact that users themselves can self-provision and recover."
"I'd recommend it it's a really good, straightforward, easy use system, with no hidden strings."
"The most valuable feature is the interface, which is very nice to work with."
"Leverage the SE and the technical expertise within NetApp; they offer really great services, and they'll provide you with an honest approach to how to address your business problems."
"The solution is great for reducing headaches in the IT department."
"Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored."
"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."
"The interface is great; the GUI is great; it's so easy to work with."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data, as you're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"The jobs we have baseline into the AltaVault, it seems to be able to recover faster than the previous solution."
"Able to reduce administrative burden on tape management."

Cons

"Not a ten because there's always room for improvement."
"The device does not allow you to do multiple backups over the whole environment."
"We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are knowledgeable."
"I don't actually use the solution."
"To clarify, the catalog feature is lacking, and you need to depend on somebody else."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"NetApp's own competing products complicate things."
"The product must provide multi-gate connectivity."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The costs were about $1,000 USD to buy the unit in the first place, and then between $250 and $300 per year for support."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"The price is a bit high."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
