Beneficial programming language for customization, powerful metric details, and reliable
    Pros and Cons
    • "All the metrics are baselines in networks, infrastructure, application, and user experience. AppDynamics offers its own query language. It is called ADQL. You can write code of any kind to do queries and analysis and you can use those within the reporting or within other research."
    • "This feature needs to be properly described to a client, and then the client needs to have a use case. There are some clients which do not need it and some clients who do. It is not for everyone and is dependant on their use case."

What is our primary use case?

AppDynamics lets you monitor applications and databases and provide a unified view of your infrastructure. You are able to monitor a single point but this would not be useful and with this solution, you would not use it this way. You want to monitor how your application is impacted from the application perspective to the backend, through to the server infrastructure, database, hardware, network, and application labs. It is all able to be monitored by AppDynamics. It monitors all the aspects from the infrastructure up to the user, and the application.

    What is most valuable?

All the metrics are baselines in networks, infrastructure, application, and user experience. AppDynamics offers its own query language. It is called ADQL. You can write code of any kind to do queries and analysis and you can use those within the reporting or other research. Additionally, together with everything which comes out of the box, you can create your own analytic views, analytic reports, and do a deep analysis of the environment. All the values or all the metrics which are gathered are quite powerful.

    What needs improvement?

This feature needs to be properly described to a client, and then the client needs to have a use case. There are some clients which do not need it and some clients who do. It is not for everyone and is dependant on their use case.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using AppDynamics Application Analytics for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have done large deployments without any issues. It is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

They provide detailed documentation for support.

    What about the implementation team?

The installation has to be done by professionals. If the client wants to take control and do it themselves they will have to do a bit of training.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the solution is reasonable for what features you receive.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others. However, they have to make sure it fits their use case.

I rate AppDynamics Application Analytics a nine out of ten.

Offers very good application performance and features which reflect backend health
    Pros and Cons
    • "Provides good overall application performance and transaction errors."
    • "This is an expensive solution."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to monitor our core application's performance, to know what transaction is running an error on transactions in these applications. We are based in Egypt and are customers of AppDynamics. I'm the deputy general manager of the company.

    What is most valuable?

The solution provides good overall application performance and transaction errors which reflect backend health. It's a user-friendly product and very powerful. It offers good performance and features.

    What needs improvement?

AppDynamics is very expensive, if it were a little cheaper it would be more attractive to clients. The company has decided not to add any new features to the on-prem version which affects our monitoring work. Because of the nature of our business, we can only deploy the solution on-prem and so we're now at a disadvantage.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support has a local presence in Egypt. They are very responsive and provide a good service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I prefer AppDynamics to the CA or Broadcom applications which I've previously used. AppDynamics is very easy to use whereas ABM was quite difficult. When it comes to technical data collection, they're both very good. Maybe CA ABM can collect more data, but when it comes to the presentation layer and ease of use, AppDynamics is much better.

    How was the initial setup?

    The initial setup is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is by subscription and AppDynamics is expensive but I believe its main competitors such as Dynatrace, are also expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this product but am a little concerned for the future given that they are no longer adding new features to the on-prem version. For now, they're supporting the on-prem version and they're releasing security batches, but no new features. It might be worth waiting to see what they decide, it could be that they will move to a cloud-only version.

I rate this solution nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Reduces time spent repairing performance problems
    Pros and Cons
    • "Application Analytics' most valuable features are the real-user monitoring and the agents installed in the software stack on the application server."
    • "Application Analytics' performance in pure and native cloud environments could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

Application Analytics is mainly used to get full visibility into the SAP stack in order to detect performance problems.

How has it helped my organization?

Application Analytics reduces the average time it takes to repair performance problems and improves cooperation between different IT departments.

    What is most valuable?

Application Analytics' most valuable features are the real-user monitoring and the agents installed in the software stack on the application server.

    What needs improvement?

Application Analytics' performance in pure and native cloud environments could be improved. It could also be more intuitive to use, especially regarding business IQ functionality, and the dashboard programming needs some manual intrusion. In the next release, I would like to see better integration with OpenTelemetry.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with Application Analytics for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Application Analytics is really stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    Application Analytics is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

AppDynamics' technical support is okay, though there's quite a lot of self-service.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was pretty straightforward and took a couple of days, though installing the SAP agent takes a little longer in SAP environments.

    What about the implementation team?

We used an in-house team and an AppDynamics team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The license fee for Application Analytics is in the range of 2.5 million over three years, with extra fees for service contingencies.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Application Analytics to others as a professional tool and rate it eight out of ten.
