What is our primary use case?
Our main use cases for Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) are extensive as it is our virtual infrastructure housing our 12 core applications. We have 1300 apps, and 1200 servers, plus now our DR project, so I would say BCP, DR, and production. Everything runs in Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2).
How has it helped my organization?
We have used Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) for data center extension and scaling workloads on demand, from production to DR. We had questions, but our partners at Nutanix helped us answer those questions and ensured we understood what we were getting into and how it worked. The process itself just took time; it wasn't difficult, just time-consuming to make sure that we had everything organized and that the goal of getting there was right. Once we had that, it was simple.
We have used Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) to migrate enterprise applications. Once we understood the process, it was a simple live migration. The process itself is about understanding it, learning it, and knowing it's not just that you push the button and it goes; you've got to know what happens on the backend. Once you understand that, it's a seamless, easy process, so we moved several production applications, cluster to cluster, here to DR, branch to branch. It's a simple process.
What is most valuable?
What I admire most about Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) is its scalability; that option that everybody seems to eventually go to is cloud, and we're ready for that when we decide.
This scalability feature has improved my company because we can grow at the speed of business, and that's very important. We're not limited by the hardware that we have. We allow ourselves room for growth, and we can literally grow from today to tomorrow to ensure that we're handling our growth. The scalability is critical for us, especially in the banking industry, where we just get bigger every year.
What needs improvement?
To make Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) the best cloud cluster solution in the market, they're already doing a lot with the security piece. We just sat in on a ransomware conference, getting up to speed on that. That's a scary thing because of the security of our data and the potential ransomware that could hit.
My suggestion would be getting up to speed on ransomware and evolving, as attackers are always one step ahead of what's out there.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) for three years, but we came over to AHV seven years ago. The NC2 in our cloud environment, for which we just purchased all the hardware, is about three years old.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) is very reliable with 99.99% uptime. We don't have outages. Every now and then, we'll have a degraded node, but if we need to, we can live migrate to another node in the same cluster. Support is quick to help us fix it, so it's very reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) scales very effectively with the growing needs of my company, and it does so very fast and quickly. I have expanded the usage since I took over three years ago, approximately five times.
How are customer service and support?
My experience with technical support has been positive. They're good and help us whenever we need them.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were on VMware. We came over to Nutanix because VMware's model was changing and getting more expensive. We understood what AHV was and what the transition was from ESXi to AHV. That was a choice we made, and we were willing to go through it. We're glad we did.
How was the initial setup?
I did not deploy AHV, but I came on a few years after we did. I knew the engineers who deployed it, and they had a great time. They thought it was a great experience; they learned a lot, understood what the product was, and what it was going to do. They built out the environment with Nutanix, and CDW helped us. From what they told me, it was a fun and entertaining project. As engineers, we love doing that stuff, and they had a great time doing it.
We have a hybrid multi-cloud environment. We have a hybrid Azure AD, so eventually, I'm pretty sure that we will be taking advantage of some of the cloud solutions as well for Nutanix.
What was our ROI?
We're Agile. We can grow quickly. We can train, and we have good classes that we can take. We have good engineers who understand it, and they can scale out. It's very quick and very supportable.
I don't know if Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) has helped reduce our total cost of ownership. For the hardware itself, it was really expensive; our last major purchase was over $5 million. But in time, it has proven beneficial because we no longer have to have hands-on management of a server environment; really, one engineer does it. The knowledge center that's out there has prepared him to be a really good engineer, and he knows exactly what he needs to do for that. So, it saved time, which saved money.
We have saved approximately 15% to 20% of time for what he does. Then, depending on the project, spinning up a new environment, getting everything connected, and scaling out if needed, that's a 10-minute process. So, I'd say about 20%.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My impression of Nutanix's license portability is that I wish it had an easier transition from one license to license. I know in the last three to four years, the model has changed three times, making it harder for me to understand the transition from one license model to the next and what that means for me. Once we understood what that meant, wanting to transfer all these licenses felt a little convoluted. Understanding what they're thinking and why they're going to the new model would probably help first, and then understanding the impact. In my world, impact means everything. So, for me, it was difficult to go through that transition, but now that I understand it a little better, I can look back and say if I knew this back then, maybe it would have been a little easier. It was cumbersome, but I understand why. Hopefully, we stick with this model for a while.
I just recently went through a licensing discussion and was able to see the cost of licensing and what we purchase licensing for. I have no problem with the hardware; the hardware pays for itself. The transition from the perpetual license to what they have now is, from a business perspective, understandable, but from an operational and cost perspective, for me, it is really expensive. However, our partners at Nutanix did work with us recently and reduced a huge licensing cost for us. They worked with us, and the relationship we have makes it easier for us to accept that this thing is expensive. If we look back at how it affects us monetarily day-to-day, because of the time-saving factor, it's fine. It's easy to accept, but that relationship was probably the key.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We didn't consider any other solutions besides VMware and Nutanix. We just went through a couple of demos.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) a nine out of ten. It offers us the solution that we've been looking for, and we never worry about getting bigger because we are ready to support whatever application is needed.
It's not just from an infrastructure point of view, but from a Nutanix support point of view. We can design a solution or consider a load balancer that may live in the cloud and connect here or to my Philippine call center. We can support that. We're ready for whatever is coming, and we have a lot of stuff coming.
